  1. Craig, Did you get the email I sent you about the MK-3s? MB
  2. I have been looking for a good quality douple pole, double throw knife switch for this but have not found one yet. Does anyone know a source?
  3. Sorry I forgot to past the link to the USM-810 at Crown's web site, here it is. http://www.crownaudio.com/pdf/126644.pdf , this unit is on page 25 & 26. Yes artto you do program this processor via a PC & RS-232 port. You will be impressed with what you can do with this unit, example of what is possible with all 10 outputs: time delay, crossover to any freq. within 1 Hz, slopes of 6,12, 18, 24, Butterworth or Linkwitz-Riley, parametric EQ with any slope & center point, again to 1 Hz. Then you can store these various setups and then switch between multiple setups with a push of front panel button for A-B comparisons
  4. arrto hear is the link at Crown's web site for info on USM-810 it is on page 26 of the file or page 25 of the brochure. If you get one you will have to make up or get special cables. The processor's inputs are the 3 pin barrier type.
  5. Now we are getting somewhere, thinks guys! artto I was not saying I was running the SACD through the processor with the intent on improving the quality, I was just wanting to know if it would degrade it. As far as the Dope from Hope, that was good reading, but not sure that it applies to the system I am using 25 years later. Remember the Crown USM-810 is doing all processing in the digital domain and all settings are verified with a high quality Crown RTA. Have you ever heard the Khorn bass section with 600 watts & a damping factor of 750 with the amp 1' from the woofer? It is the best I have heard, and no it is not exagerated but set to the same level as the midrange & tweeter. Now I admit the mid is a little harsh sounding to me but it always has been with the Crown SS amps I have used. My goal is to keep the bass and better the mid & high by using a high quality triode amps for those. That is the next step. The cost is not a factor as I already have everything except the tube amps and have enough Crown SS equipment to sell to pay for the tube amps.
  6. Anybody else have any input?

Give me facts of your past experience with Tri-Amp/time delay. I am here to learn from others and share the same. I have been listening to Khorns for 40 years but always striving for perfection. Even Klipsch recommends in there info on their cinema page to split the amps and drivers. http://klipsch.com/media/Products/CinemaCrossovers.pdf They list the crossover freq and delay to use when tri amping. If there is a valid reason this is not a good idea I would like to hear about it in factual terms not just that it is not good.

The Crown is going to add some noise and distortion to any signal it processes. TANSTAAFL. This is (most likely) a very small amount of noise and distortion. The higher quality signal you feed it, the higher quality signal you will get out of it. If the difference between your SACD player and some other source is significant enough that you can hear it, I doubt that the small amount of degredation due to the processing of the Crown will mask those differences. The SACD will still sound, uh, more better than the other sources. As to the sampling rate question, you are comparing 24 bit word sampling 48kHz with (well, sort of) 1 bit word sampling 2.8224 MHz. This is not even apples and oranges, it's more like apples and Wild Troll Caught King Salmon. You cannot simply compare the sampling rates on a head to head basis, the technology is wildly different. How did you do the analysis to figure out the time delay parameters - empirically based on theory, or do you have some way to measure it? How do you like what it does for the speakers? ---------------- Someone on this board gave me the time delays based on actual measurments, I don't recall who. I can find that info if anyone is interested, I still have it in a file somewhere. The tri-amp experience has been very good. I am using 610 watts of Crown SS to drive each woofer with only about 3' of 10 ga cable and the bass is awesome. The real reason I am doing all of this is to keep my current bass setup and use triode amps for the midrange and tweeters, instead of my current SS. I think I understand the sampling thing a little better, maybe
  9. Griffinator, I have to go through the Crown processor or do away with my current Tri-amp setup (see my other post in this thread) the Crown is doing the 3-Way crossover.
  10. gerbache & artto, I don't think you understand what I am saying, I may not be saying it right. Let me try again; I am not trying to get the SACD digital signal to a DAC. The output from my SACD is already in analog and still is at the input to the Crown prosessor. What concerns me is that the Crown has a 24 bit 48KHz A/D converter and after the signal is processed it goes to a 24 bit 48 KHz D/A converter, which as I understand it a much smaller sampling rate than SACD. So my question is would this defeat the advantage of SACD over CD and if so do you think it is possible to upgrade the chips in the Crown to a higher sampling rate.
  11. So essentially once the SACD player has converted the signal to analog putting it through any other DAC with a sample rate lower than 2.822MHz would be a gaint step backwards. Is that what you are saying? If so is the DAC something that can normally be upgraded in a processor such as a Crown USM-810?
  12. So what does all that mean?
  13. Artto, I am using the processor as a crossover, time delay to tri-amp my Khorns. Just added a SACD and was wondering what effect the 48 kHz DAC would have. Isn't SACD at 192 kHz? Am I hearing all the benifits of SACD?
  14. If I send the analog output from an SACD player through a digital processor with a high quality 24 Bit,48 kHz A/D & D/A converters along with 240MIPS of full 32-bit floating point DSP. Will the signal be degraded? I am mostly concerend about the 48 kHz sampling rate. Any comments will be apreciated. MB
  15. It really depends on the coefficient of friction in the wire. I can tell you as an ex racer that some times the high groove (long way around to race track) is the fastest so if the grip (friction) is higher in the fine wire it may actually be faster, making the high (faster) note arrive even faster, not good. The friction (grip) that the electrons get is dependant on variables, such as temp, humidity, age of wire(it wears out & gets electron build up) etc. So if you don't have precise control of all of this you are screwed!! If you belive all this you are really screwed!!!
  16. The monster cable is of a heavier ga compared to the wire Klipsch previously used. I believe that would account for any difference heard especially in the bass range due to increasing the dampening from the amp.
  17. mdeneen, I would be interested in discussing Tri- Amping with you ofline sometime. Email me with a phone number, if that is ok with you, and I will call you. I am currently tri-amping Khorns with SS and would like to do what you discussed in your last post.
  18. Altec A7's on ebay ihr left $350 http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3031543989&category=3284
  19. mdeneen, she was actually 17 when we got married now 48. And yes the pics are very recent, I don't know how she does it but glad she does.. She thanks you for the compliment. I also thank you for you intelligent post on this site, based more on fact not voo doo..lol
  20. You might consider a Crown DC 300 Series II, better yet two of them each in mono, and each as close to the individual speaker as possible with 10 ga. cable. High power and very high dampining factor and slew rate. MB
  21. I can only wish I looked as good as her..LOL..
  22. Ok I'll go first, I am very proud of her. We have been married 31 years and she still looks great!!
  23. Maybe we should post pics of our wives, what do you think, it could be interesting!
  24. Myhamish, I forgot to mention the USM 810 is programed via a PC and the only changes made at the unit level is the ability to switch between pre programed setups.
  25. Myhamish, I think you are refering to the Crown USM 810 which is a digital crossover, time delay, and EQ. It has 8 inputs & 8 outputs which can be combine in any way you can imagine. I use it as a crossover to Tri Amp my horns and the time delay to align them also. It has many selectable crossover types and slopes. I use the Crown RTA real time analyzer to set it all up. It sounds fantastic, especially the bass with the DC 300II in mono driving the woofer with about 24" of 10 ga cable. As you know this amp has a very high dampning factor. I highly reccommend the USM 810, it has been flawless. You can also store many different setup configs and switch between them for A/B comparisons. MB
