  1. It is pretty hard to get a pic of the sub as it is in a corner between a couch and a chair and can only be seen from above. Directly above the sub in the corner is a temp shelve that is holding my Industrial HIP speaker.

Did you get a 1099 form after winning the sub?

No... Will I be getting one?

  3. I received the Triax sub today. I have calibrated it with the 4520, and it sounds great! I bumped up the bass on the sub from -8 to 0, and now when I watch TV shows I can hear the bass on them too. I never realized that tv shows had bass too, especially as to how deep they go... I have my La Scalas set to crossover @ 80, and the sub to crossover @120. The Denon required me to set the sub level to -8, so I let it and then raised it up to 0 when I was finished. When the Denon was @ -8 it sounded real good but now it sounds great! Boy, what a change this is from listening to the old KLH for 10 years!

The bass is very deep and powerful! The first movie I put on was WWZ. I was not able to crank it up as everyone was home, but @ -20 it was sounding pretty good. My next movie up (for demo) was Tron... The bass on it is unreal, and that was @ -20 also!

I also received my minidsp mic today, so hopefully I can run REW in the next few days and see how it looks. I only have 1 place that the sub can go currently so not much I can do about getting it flat, but someday I will have a garage converted to a HT, and then I will be able to do the sub crawl and get the sub optimized.

All I can say is that even with a non room optimized sub it still sounds great!

If you can get up the scratch to afford this sub you will not be disappointed!

  4. I would like to pose a couple of questions to all of you here. What speakers are you using? What are you using to power thosse speakers, an amp or receiver? How happy are you with that amp or receiver? Do you fell like its just right, you could do better or is it overkill for your set up? Lastly whats your favotite color?

What speakers are you using? 3 La Scalas, 2 Heresy Industrial HIP speakers, and a PSA Triax sub

What are you using to power those speakers, an amp or receiver? Denon 4520 AVR

How happy are you with that amp or receiver? Very happy

Do you fell like its just right, you could do better or is it overkill for your set up? I think with my current speakers I have a little more power than I need but it is better to have too much than not enough and clip the speakers.

Lastly whats your favorite color? Blue

  5. That was my problem also. I have 3 Lascalas across the front with an ib sub setup. I have 2 18" drivers on each side of the center Lascala. The Lascalas are also recessed into thye wall. I was limited to the screen height since everything needed to be above the speakers. I went anamorph and that allowed me to go 12' wide and everything still fit above th speakers on an 8' tall wall.

Why didn't you go with a AT screen with the LaScalas recessed into the wall?

  6. Good question. It takes a little over five 6.5" drivers to equal the cone area of one 15" if that's any indicator. You could fix some room issues with multiples though.

You could put one for each channel...

  7. Does wood normally have a different characteristic sound compared to aluminum?

Some people complain about ringing in aluminum or cast metal horns. Others complain about honking in plastic horns. Now whether or not those issues indeed exist with metal or plastic horns is something that will be debated until the end of time. The advantage of using wood or mdf is their resonant frequencies are below the horns range. So no debate needed. Dave is indeed the new horn guru. I've learned much from his tireless efforts.

Thank you for the response. I assume that the thickness of the wood would make the resonance drop even lower... So the resonenance frequency would be lower than the cabinet resonance frequency.

  8. Theoretically.... You could use a 15 DBW amp for each sub and reach reference levels, correct? THX specs are 115db on peaks I believe. I know you are referring to 2 channel but I would think the levels would be similar. I know I will not be listening above 115db.

  9. The Disney wow disc? It's a joke for demo material. Great to calibrate. But that's it's true purpose.

Ooh... I didn't know that, I bought it because I had heard it was a good demo disc too.

  10. I sit about 12' from our 134" screen and I wish I would have went 150"! When we convert the garage I am going 150"+. We might go all the way to 170". Go big as you can and you will never regret it.

Need a light canon for it, otherwise you might regret it.

I am tempted to go the 2 projector route...

  11. Some would suggest that I bought my speakers while blindfolded, but I would buy these for said prices if closer.

You might want to check these out since they are in your area and he will deliver...

The ad says $1000 each. He will be sitting on these for a long time.

It says $1500 for the pair and he will deliver for free.

I didn't see that. The market must be much stronger in California if these are worth $1500.

Yeah they are a little high out here...If I was to buy them I would offer him less and see what I could get them for.

  12. As far as I know the woofers are the only difference other than cosmetics. I believe the woofer handles more power. That guy wants too much money IMO there are much better deals to be found. Are you going to use them for home use... Why don't you go for the other 2 pairs on Craigslist?

There was another pair in Stockton that were natural birch earlier this week for $900 or offer but they are gone now.

Keep your eyes open. I picked up a pair for $500 and a third one for $450 in the bay area.

  13. "if you have a 4inch exhaust system well things move much more freely and you get alot more power!!!"

So, if bigger is better, should I go to a 6"? How about I just take off the manifold?

This was just used as an example of how it was described to me, it was a quick and effective way for me to grasp the overall situation...

Actually the 4" exhaust being more power is not always true. Some motors will produce more power with a smaller exhaust... The key is to get the right diameter to maximize the performance.

  14. The price really varies by location and condition... I picked up a pair made in 1978 for $500 that were in about the same condition as those but mine were black (a couple of weeks ago). I recently saw a pair that were in worse condition than mine go for $1k, while someone else is having a hard time selling a pair in good condition for $900 a pair.
