  1. I flew up to milwaukee this weekend to pick up a

    car I bought.

I figured while i was up that way why not meet up with Hofy and Damin for lunch.

So I said "Yeah, the interior is a little worn. There are a couple places in the leather seats where the stitching is coming apart"

Hofy says, "Be right back" and heads off. Didn't think anything about it, thought he was going to the restroom.

Hofy comes back and says "Fixed those seats for ya!" with this big grin on his hairy mug and a double size roll of duct tape in his hands!

It gets ugly from there, parts of dead pig flying across the reastuarant, police, lawyers, etc...

Then I looked at Hofy's car and realized, "This guy thinks Duct Tape is a color."

  2. NO! It will not die! This thread will be active as long as Klipsch has this board up! Wish I could find the old "How to Overclock Your Promedias" thread.

Isn't this some kind of record? Two years and this thread is still active! That's got to be a record. Somebody call Guiness (and get me one while your at it!)

  3. OK, just for clarification, there is almost no difference between driver made for car audio and drivers made for home audio. The biggest one is the Ohm rating. And I did put my Pros in my Jeep, but it was just parked in the driveway with a long extension cord. I put the front sats down where the kickpanels are and tried the rear stas both forwards in the corner and backwards firing into the rear glass. It sounded good. Wouldn't recomend it for permanent install. The bass from my Pro sub in the Jeep was comprable to my 10" Alpine Type S which gets 150 watts RMS, but the 10" goes lower (duh)c>

  4. Hi, no I'm not dead, just real busy.

Hofy, are you saying that .ape files are as good as .wav files, just 40% smaller? I've never thought mp3 was very good format, so I have all my stuff stored as .wav files. I'd love to gain an additional 40% of storage.

BTW, got my tbird to 950 stable. I know, it's old and slow now so stop laughing.

  5. Many people have complained in the past about the "lack" of midrange. Having had experience with Boston Acoustics speakers before, I agree with Insane3D about the Klipsch midrange. It's there, it's just a different sound.

You can say the the Promedias tend to "color" the sound, but please don't compare them to Bose. If they were anything like Bose, they would color the sound 4 times as much and cost 4 times as much. I've had my Pros for well over a year now. They do sound better over time, but I didn't notice a real difference for about 3 months. I don't think 14 days will be enough unless you burn them in with pink noise.

What I did to rectify the "midrange" problem was to add an external EQ to the front channels. I used a PPI PEQ-114 4-band parametric EQ. This is far superior to any software EQ, and I got a steal on it for $40 (normally $150).

I've also just recieved a pair of Quintet sats that will replace my Pros front sats. These have a 3.5" woofer and are ported out the back. I will report on how they sound soon.

I made this statement over a year ago, and I still believe it to be true today..."You can't buy a better sounding 4.1 multimedia system for less". In fact, like you said, you would need to spend twice as much to sound better. At $250 (or $200 in your case), the Pros are a steal. I can't wait for Klipsch to release a true 5.1 multimedia system. I'd preorder now if they'd let me.

I don't believe anyone here thinks that the Pros are the best sounding speakers on the planet. That would be stupid. They are, however, an extremely good value. That is the strong point of the Pros, IMO.

  6. Try Powerstrip for overclocking your video card, and let me know if it works with the Radeon 64MB DDR card. I have the same card, but am in the process of migrating my AMD Tbird 800/Abit KT7-RAID to a new configuration. I'm also waiting on my SuperOrb to get here.

You do know how to unlock your Tbird don't you? If not, just go to ard/OCP and search the forums there. Basically, if the bridges are cut, use a graphote pencil or a condictie pen to connect them. Mine are cut, but I used a pencil on them. It worked, but if I was going to O/C permanently I would use a conductive pen. Maybe you got lucky and got an unlocked processor.

Also, if your Tbird doesn't have the Dresden core (copper interconnects, made in Scottland) then you probably won't get much over 1GHz. The seems to be the bottlneck speed for aluminum interconnects. But, I think all 1GHz and above Tbirds are made in Scotland.

More fans is not necessarily good. I have 2 120mm Aluminum Panaflows inf front sucking in, and 1 120mm Aluminum Panaflow exhaust in back along with the power supply fan. This gives me a positive airflow (more in than out) and that helps keep my system free of dust.

You could also do what I plan as soon as the Cold Forge case arrives, cut a sidehole directly over your processor and use a tude to duct fresh air directly into the top of the Orb. Then fabricate a semi-circle duct to direct the exhaust from the Orb to the rear fans. I don't know just how well that would work, but it looks good on paper. Sort of like a windtunnel for your processor.

I also want to get a BlueOrb and ramsinks for the Radeon. Too bad the Radeon doesn't have holes to mount a cooler.

  7. Mark,

Which Radeon did you get? I just got the 64MB DDR and I absolutely love it. I upgraded from an ATI Xpert2000 32MB card. I bought ATI because I'm a quality freak on DVDs, and gaming is secondary to DVDs on my systems. I was surprised that I could actually see a difference in display quality on the Radeon. I didn't think it could get much better than what I had. Of course, It could be my monitor biggrin.gif

  8. I put 3 Seagate SCSi 10K RPM drives in a dual Pentium Pro 233 server a few months ago, RAID 5 config. It was very fast, but I don't know if it's worth it for a work(play)station. Are there 10K IDE drives now? If so, unless the data transfer rate can sustain >40Mb/sec, I'd pass.

  9. Seb, good choices. But, you might wait for the DDR mobos.

Sharkey did a Socket A roundup just last month. He crowned the Microstar mobo the winner, mostly for stability. The ASUS or ABIT are my choice, I went with the Abit KT7-RAID for the Raid option, otherwise it's a difficult choice.

A 1Ghz Tbird is a great choice. Get a good heatsink/fan combo, close the bridges and you could get as high as 1.2 with no special effort.

Cases, Enlight makes good cases. So do Superpower (that's what the Klipschmonster is in). The powersupply should be 300W. You might try the Tornado 2000, which already has blow holes and fans mounted, but it's a bit more expensive. Plan to spend $100 or so on the case and fans. You also want a positive airflow, more CFMs in than out, helps keep the dust out of your system.

Are there Fry's in Quebec? They usually carry nice cases.

Just order the IBM harddrives online. I woulod have went with them, but I already had a pair of Maxtor 30GB drives.

www.storagereview.com for harddrive stuff www.hardocp,com for hardware/overclocking www.arstechnica.com more hardware and extreme tech www.anandtech.com great site www.sharkyextreme.com What can I say? www.tomshardware.com One of the pioneers

As for the DVD, get the Pioneer. It's the best, unless you already have SCSI then go for a Plextor SCSI DVD.

I like the GoldenOrb heatsinks, or the Chrome Orb. Alpha makes good heatsinks as well, just not as stylish as the Orbs. Unless you are putting a window in the side of your case, get the best.

You might consider getting CAS2 ram. It's not that much more expensive, and well worth it.

  10. Well, I already upgrade one of my PCs to WinME. Did that about a month ago. This machine is used for making harddrive images and burning backup CDs at work. Before, with 98SE, the computer would be frozen when I came to work in the morning. Now, with ME, it's been running great with no lockups. I left it on for an entire weekend just to see and it was fine when I came back Monday. So, I'm willing to try ME, but I'll revert back to SE if all does not go well.

  11. On the C:\ drive I plan on putting Windows ME/Windows 2000 in a dual boot config, plus Office 2000 Professional. The other apps I use are Dreamweaver, Fireworks, photoshop, Illustrator, 3D Studio Max, Maya, Bryce 4 etc. I think that 8GB will be enough for the OS and apps installs, with the 30GB drives for storing all the data files.

I also have a pair of WD 14GB harddrives that I will use for .wav storage (MP3s suck imo) and just junk files.

Con't wait to see how this baby performs. If I was to try putting the OS on the SCSI drives, then try it on the 30GB drives, what programs do you suggest to benchmark with? I have SandraSoft.

  12. Hey guys, mind if I get you opinion? Here's what I've got:

1 SCSI-2 PCI controller card (not sure of brand, but it is a dual-channel 40Mb/sec card)

    2 4GB Seagate Barracuda 7200RPM SCSI-2 harddrives (pulled from a SUN workstation)

    2 30GB Maxtor ATA100 7200RPM 2MB cache harddrives (new)

1 KT7-RAID mobo (will be here Friday)

    1 Tbird 800Mhz processor (finally!)

I was thinking that I would install the OS and main apps on the SCSI drives in a RAID 0 config, and used the 30GB drives in a mirrored RAID config for storage. Do you have a better suggestion?

Yes, Hofy, I finally broke down and upgraded my P2 266 (Ahahaa!!!!). I got the ATI Radeon 64MB DDR vid card to go with my Sony 24" Trinitron biggrin.gif, so my system is almost complete. I'm thinking of gettting the NewQ Platinum EQ if the reviews turn out good.

  13. Preliminary tests that I have seen show about a 10% performance increase with DDR RAM. I just got an ABIT KT7-RAID with 800Mhz Tbird myself, along with an ATI Radeon 64MB, Ultra Wide SCSI controller card, 2 9GB Seagate Barracuda harddrives, 2 Maxtor 30.7GB 7200ROM ATA100 hard drives, a Plextor 40x SCSI CDROM drive, SBLive 5.1 Platinum,Yamaha 4x4x16 CDRW (inherited), 256MB CAS2 PC133 RAM, and a Sony GDM-FD900 24" minotor. I think that will do me for a while so I'm not that interested in DDR RAM at this point. 10% is a good bit of increase, but with a 1.1Ghz machine will you really notice? Will you notice the difference between 47 FPS and 50FPS? I can't, that's why I got the ATI card, for the image quality and it's $200 less than the Ultra.c>

  14. QG, you da man I need to talk to. I've been looking at the NewQ, and I've read every review I could find (total of 2) plus their entire website but I still a few questions.

    1) Can I turn off all the effects from the DSP and use the NewQ as a simple 4-channel EQ without messing up the 3D sound from games?

    2) How is the quality? It's hard to tell from the web.

    3) Why didn't you get the Platinum version?

    4) What's up with that 10 pin connector? How does this thing interface your soundcard?

    5) I noticed that the THD was 0.13%, which is quite a bit higher than the Precision Power PEQ-114 that I am using noe (0.0074%). Do you notice any distortion, especially in the high end?

    6) What are the EQ center frequencies?

Sorry, I know that's a lot of questions, but no one else seems to have this thing.
