  3. Go Seb, tell 'em!!! j/k Thanks for the link, I'm looking forward to playing around with the DTS decoding that I will have for my Pros soon. Are any of those CDs noticeable better than the others? My tastes run towards Clapton/Eagles/Allman Bros/Steve Miller Band/Beck/Joe Cocker/Steely Dan and throw in some George Strait for variety. How bout those sampler CDs? $25 is a lot to spend if it sucks. Also, besides Saving Private Ryan, what's a really good DTS DVD? c> ------------------ Who knows what evil lurks in the darkness of The Kave ? www.thekave.net Home of The Klipschmonster!

    Best MoBo for P3

Since you are not having to pay for the chip. why don't you go all out and get the best mobo you can? ASUS CUSL2..... PS, can your cousin get 2? c> ------------------ Who knows what evil lurks in the darkness of The Kave ? www.thekave.net Home of The Klipschmonster!
  5. Oh, and pricewatch is a great place to START looking when building a new system. One vendor that shows upa lot is Comp-U-Plus in New York. I've ordered from them several times and haven't had a problem. They don't always have the lowest prices, but they ship fast and are accurate. That's where I ordered by Live 5.1 from. c> ------------------ Who knows what evil lurks in the darkness of The Kave ? www.thekave.net Home of The Klipschmonster!
  6. partition Magic is a MUST HAVE!!! I just got V6 and it's great. On that Compaq, make sure it doesn't have a small 8mb or 16mb partition on the HD. Mine did, I deleted it and then couldn't get into the BIOS (evidently, it was a diagnostic/bios partition). It showedup in FDISK as "unknown" file type. c> ------------------ Who knows what evil lurks in the darkness of The Kave ? www.thekave.net Home of The Klipschmonster!

    The Best Case

It's not in production yet, but I believe this may be the best case for the DIY case mod freak What you see here is a 100% aluminum case that has been anodized different colors. It's freaking huge (14" wide) and I want one badly. Here's another view, before anodizing The guys who's doing this is Stiltner and you can see his website at http://casedesign.jjplating.com Price is expected to be ~$260 with a 300w sparkle PS + shipping of course. Availability is expected to be Jan 2001. c> ------------------ Who knows what evil lurks in the darkness of The Kave ? www.thekave.net Home of The Klipschmonster!
  8. Dman, could you email me that file? I'm getting my Live 5.1 next week and would like to compare it to the MX300 using that file. kevin@thekave.net c> ------------------ Who knows what evil lurks in the darkness of The Kave ? www.thekave.net Home of The Klipschmonster!
  9. I've noticed that FSAA has a bigger impact on image quality with games like flight sims and Need for Speed. I didn't really noticed that much with FSAA in 3d shooters (this was on an ATI card, the GF may be different) c> ------------------ Who knows what evil lurks in the darkness of The Kave ? www.thekave.net Home of The Klipschmonster!

  14. Hey Dman, I quite using MP3s a while ago. Since harddrives are so cheap now, there really s no reason to convert to mp3 unless you are downloading/uploading/using a portable player. I can also tell adifference between a 320 mp3 and cd/.wav files. I'm not sure about the minidisc format, don't have one. I do remember a minidisc drive for the PC some time ago, but I'm not sure if it's still available. Or even if it was available here in the states. As far as rippers go, I used AudioCatalyst. Seemed to give the best results with my hardware. It depends a lot on your cdrom/dvd drive/computer spces. My suggestion is to try the demo versions of several rippers, then buy the full version of the one you like best. AudioCatalyst may be the choice for your system, but I can't make a blanket statement. laterz c>------------------ Who knows what evil lurks in the darkness of The Kave ? www.thekave.net Home of The Klipschmonster!
  15. Welcome back Big D! Sounds like a sweet setup. Guess you heard the bad news about TheKave. Fun while it lasts, ever how long that is. Anyway, enjoy your new network. Did you go 100 or 10Mbps? Did you use a switch or a hub? Hmm, 10GBps switch c>------------------ Who knows what evil lurks in the darkness of The Kave ? www.thekave.net Home of The Klipschmonster!
  16. It will run, but not smoothly. I ran mine on an ATI 4mb before I upgraded to the 32mb Xpert2000. c>------------------ Who knows what evil lurks in the darkness of The Kave ? www.thekave.net Home of The Klipschmonster!
  17. Please do Tekk, I'm interested in that G450. I've got the Via Apollo MVP3 chipset, it's an older AMD K2-450 system that's been giving me headaches for the past month. I found the problem though. You guys know the little thermal pad between the heatsink and tthe procesor, well whatever moron put this system together neglected to remove the little piece of plastic on the thermal pad before he put it on the processor. Can you say crashed and burned, literally? About ATIs driver support, I have used ATI cards for years, from the ATI RagePRO 4mb, the Xpert 98 (rage XL) 8mb, to my current card, Xpert2000 (rage128) 32mb. ATI is no better or worse than any other company as far a s drivers go. Their tech support is pretty good, I had to call to get an installation CD of this Xpert98 (rage XL). For some reason, they drivers aren't available on their website, only on the CD. Well, the tech support guy didn't have access to them either, but the sales department did, and they sent me a CDROM which I got in about a week. Pretty good customer support IYAM. c>------------------ Who knows what evil lurks in the darkness of The Kave ? www.thekave.net Home of The Klipschmonster!
  18. Hey guys, I just installed a fresh copy of Win98 (not SE) on a Tyan Trinity AT S1590 mobo. I took a peak at the Device Manager and under "Hard drive controllers" is has 3 entries: 1) Primary Bus Master IDE controller (dual fifo) 2) Secondary Bus Master IDE controller (dual fifio) 3) VIA Bus Master PCI IDE Controller (Ultra DMA) Now, the $64,000 question, why does it say both Bus Master and fifo? I used the latest VIA Busmaster drivers. What's going on? I never gave this much thought till you guys started talking about it. c>------------------ Who knows what evil lurks in the darkness of The Kave ? www.thekave.net Home of The Klipschmonster!
  19. Gimme RADEON!!! (a MAXX version please!) I'd be interested in seeing those websites that talk abut Busmastering, you guys have peaked my interest. Luckily, it will be a couple months before I buy my next vid card. Unless something changes, it's probably going to be a Radeon 64MB. Do you know if you can get the G400 in PCI flavor? c>------------------ Who knows what evil lurks in the darkness of The Kave ? www.thekave.net Home of The Klipschmonster!
  20. I ran across this review of the G400 MAX at combatsim.com from august of 99. It's a little old but what I thought was nice was the demonstration of Environmental Bump Mapping. Expendable with normal water Expendable with Environmental Bump Mapping You can really see the difference in the eye candy. The pics are on the second page of the review where you can see larger images. c>------------------ Who knows what evil lurks in the darkness of The Kave ? www.thekave.net Home of The Klipschmonster!
  21. Are you insinuating that my new PC isn't going to be a REAL PC? j/k If you want stability, my personal experience is an ASUS K7V, Athlon 500@700, running RedHat 6.1 as a web server. It's been up 24/7 for 8 months without having to reboot. Admittedly, it's only a web server, but it's rock solid. Windows is buggy, it's just something that I've learned to live with. Reboot, Reinstall, Reformat. You know the routine. I know this though, I'm not at all happy with VIA's MVP3 chipset for the Super7 platform. Nothing but problems. I think that going back a generation in technology is smart if you are looking for stability. I didn't upgrade to Win98 till SE came out. Power management sucks and I've always turned it off as much as I can, even on my laptops. What are Matrox's plans for their next-gen chipset? Have they announced anything at all? The buggy drivers comes with fast product cycles. There is no way to release solid drivers for a new product every 6 months. As far as soundcards, MX300 with Aureal reference drivers. Never caused a problem, rock solid. Let's face it, ISA is on it's way out. Not because it's not a good platform, but it's speed-limited and that's a big no-no in today's comp world. I don't use any ISA cards at all now and can't say that I've missed them much. PCI plug-and-play is great when it works properly. Holding on to legacy technology (ISA) causes major problems for developers and overall increases the bloat factor of code. Imagine how much leaner Windows would be if there were no ISA devices to deal with. That case is nice, but I prefer the Penguin version! Comments? c>------------------ Who knows what evil lurks in the darkness of The Kave ? www.thekave.net Home of The Klipschmonster!
  22. Screw it, I'm just going to order this : http://www.geek.com/htbc/glandrwk.htm c> ------------------ Who knows what evil lurks in the darkness of The Kave ? www.thekave.net Home of The Klipschmonster!
  23. OK guys, little help here please. See, I've got this problem. I've got $6600 and I don't know what to buy first!! j/k Actually, I've got enough to go ahead and get either the 24" monitor or the mobo, Tbird and 4 IBM 75GXP 30GB harddrives. I'm leaning towards the monitor because those prices are a lot more stable than the rest of the stuff. Does that sound like a smart move? UPDATE: I tried to order the 24" directly from Sony, and here's what I got: quote: Multiscan FW900 Computer Display Unfortunately the item that you have chosen is temporarily out of stock. Our estimated availability date for this product is 08/30/2000 Oh well, couple weeks isn't that bad. c> ------------------ Who knows what evil lurks in the darkness of The Kave ? www.thekave.net Home of The Klipschmonster!
  24. As long as I'm stuck here in the eighth circle of hell (dialup) I'll just keep using ZoneAlarm. But it's nice to know that router works IF I ever get DSL. c> ------------------ Who knows what evil lurks in the darkness of The Kave ? www.thekave.net Home of The Klipschmonster!
