  1. As far as the felt pen trick is concerned, I caught the tail end of a story on the radio the other day regarding felt pens and cd's. It was something about being able to outwit Sony's anti-copying system on their discs by drawing a black line around the outside of the disc. I may have some of this confused as I only heard part of the story. But it was definitely about black felt pens, music disks, Sony, and copying. Did anyone else hear this? 2. Finally brought my Turntable home from the dealer last night. Here are the specs: Clearaudio Champion Level 1 with - RB 250 ST w/Clearaudio mods - "Six Stream" internal wiring and cable - Benz Micro Ace MC cart (lowest output) - Dust Cover I've been using a MMF 2.1 as a loaner for the last 4 weeks. Interesting sidebar - Had some friends over Memorial Weekend for a BBQ. One of the husbands noticed the turntable in my rack and commented, "I haven't seen one of those in use for awhile. I asked him to sit down and take a listen. Put Patricia Barber's "Modern Cool" in both the CDP and on the TT. Then cued up "Light My Fire" on both. Played the CD version for a minute (He commented on how nice it sounded.), then switched to the TT for 30 sec., then back to the CD again before finishing on the TT. His jaw dropped. He said "It's like you took a blanket off the speakers when you switched to the turntable. Oh really? We continued this for a while with a couple of other records I have on CD. Same reaction. Mind you this was a $200 TT compared to a $1,000 CDP. Last night after hooking up my Clearaudio and doing the same comparison, it was a case of OH MY GAWD! How can you go back to CD after hearing this? I think a recent interview with Neil Young put it best, "A CD is a reconstruction of the sound. It's not even a clone. It's more like a toy or a robot, just a sting of ones and zeros, whereas analog recording is a true reflection, like a pool or a mirror. Imagine telling Picasso, 'That's a nice painting; now we're going to fax it to the public.' There's no doubt in my mind that this is why the industry is failing." 3. Very topical for me right now... Just took delivery on my first tt in 25 years recently. Never, ever thought I would lay down serious scratch for some Jurassic audio format. No way, not me. But here I am listening to Patricia Barber on vinyl while I type. She freaking sounds like she's in the next room! I cannot even begin to imagine what it might cost to get near that fidelity digitally. While I'm sure, SACD and DVD-A will improve on CD digital sound, it will still be digital sound. Just do the math. Digital is finite. Analog is not. We can argue back and forth about what is going to happen in the future. But one thing for sure, is the fact that the record companies will not give one iota of consideration to sound quality when it comes time to decide on format. They will sell what people buy, and people buy what is cheaper. There IS a chance neither SACD or DVD-A will get much play. Do we need to list the failed (albeit superior performing) formats? Probably not. For now, I choose vinyl. It sounds better to me. PS When I played Big Brother & The Holding Company's "Cheap Thrills" on vinyl for my 17 year old daughter and her friends, they said "Wow, she can really sing". Ya think? ------------------ 2 channel Klipsch Cornwalls (1978) Cary CAD 300SEI amp (WE 300B's, various NOS 6SN7's) Arcam Alpha MCD cd player Accuphase T-101 Tuner Clearaudio Champion TT Rega RB300 arm (quint wire) Benz Micro Cartridge EAR Phono Stage HT Klipsch KG2.5 (front & rear) Klipsch KV2 (center) Klipsch SW12 (sub) Marantz SR7000 receiver Toshiba DTS DVD JVC SVHS VCR Sony Hi8 VCRs>
  4. Jazman, Quint wiring is an option offered when you buy a Clearaudio Champion TT. It may have something to do with their US Distributor (Musical Surroundings). As a matter of fact, I believe MS is located in either Oakland or Berkeley. Maybe 45 min. from Antioch? They can probably help you (www.musicalsurroundings.com). If not, I hear The Analog Room in San Jose is the place to go. 6. Builder, We have alot of tastes in common. Just got a Nitty Gritty record cleaner and have cruising the thrift stores. Yesterday I cleaned: Loggins & Messina, Full Sail - very nice Joni Mitchell, Court and Spark - a true allstar backup lineup Steve Miller, The Joker - My 17yo daughter loved it. Jackson Brown, For Everyman & Late For The Sky - classic Allman Brothers, Eat A Peach - fantastic Emmylou Harris, Profile - THE voice imho Boz Scaggs, Silk Degrees - great arrangments E,L,&P, Lucky Man - really puts your system through the paces Steely Dan, Aja - classic Big Brother & the Holding Company, Cheap Thrills - My daughter and her friends said "she can really sing". Oh really? Totally agree with you on Maria Muldaur album. Once again my daughter immediately went AudioGalaxy looking to download. Greatful Dead, Europe '72 - one of my all timers, also some Dead stuff with Maria Muldaur on it. I could go on and on. Having an amazingly great time with my new turntable. 7. ChemPharma, Love your stuff. If not for the semi-civil nature of this board, we could take some of your material to a whole new level. And have a great time doing so... HDBRbuilder, Hope you're not too angry with me. However, sometimes stereotype jokes have their roots in fact. Just ask former football player Reggie White. Anyway, you asked me about my Cornwall's in an earlier thread. I just got them back from a professional refinisher. They look awesome. As a concession to my far better half, I had them stained a sort of light cherry color along with having the cabinets reinforced and restored. It may seem strange, but they do seem to sound better. Back to your question about markings on the back... Speaker 13RO38 has a "R" stamped on the left side rear edge, near the top joint Speaker 13RO39 has "MS" stamped on the left side of the top rear edge, near the joint PS PWK and his persona are one of the reasons I own 8 Klipsch speakers. My father worked for many years for a similar type company. As a young man, I remember often going to his office for a ride home from school. Actually it was not an "office" in the normal sense. Nobody had a private office. Everyone worked in groups, with shared assistants instead of secretaries. This included the CEO, COO, and everyone else. I would study, read, or just hang out and talk with his coworkers. Once in awhile the boss would stroll by, say hi to me and ask me how school was going. I would say "fine, Mr. Packard". My father worked for Hewlett-Packard for many years and it was there they coined the phrase "management by walking around". Too bad Carly and the rest of the boys don't seem to get that concept. Too many other things to worry about. Such as stock price, executive compensation, ego, "where's the limo?", etc., etc.. Back in the day all they worried about was making the best products in the world, no compromise, and with "zero defects". ------------------ 2 channel Klipsch Cornwalls (1978) Cary CAD 300SEI amp (WE 300B's, various NOS 6SN7's) Arcam Alpha MCD cd player Accuphase T-101 Tuner Sota Sapphire TT Alphason HR-100 arm Grado Sonata Cartridge EAR Phono Stage HT Klipsch KG2.5 (front & rear) Klipsch KV2 (center) Klipsch SW12 (sub) Marantz SR7000 receiver Toshiba DTS DVD JVC SVHS VCR Sony Hi8 VCRs>
  8. HDBRbuilder Ease up...relax... Nobody said anything about Arkansas being "any worse off than West Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, etc...or even Southern California?". If we can't laugh at ourselves we're in big trouble. I'm sorry if I offended you. I'm sure Arkansas is a wonderful place. As is Southern California, Denver, Seattle, New York, Lubbock, Pixly, Katmandu, etc., etc. Sounds like I hit a nerve. Reading ChemPharma's post in HDBRbuilder's crossover thread had me howling. Remember, this is done out of love. My contribution - What's the most popular saying on a Christmas card in Arkansas? 11. I have an Arcam MCD changer. While it holds only 6 cd's at a time, it's the best sounding changer I auditioned (Sony, CAL, Pioneer, etc., etc.). It's just about the best trade off between sonics and convenience you can find. They go for $600+ new. Mine was a store demo that was factory certified with a full warranty. I paid $400 plus tax. BTW, it does make strange noises when shuffling discs. Typical British gadgetry I assume. 12. I have been sort of bitten by the vintage tuner bug. I have picked up 4 different models at swap meets, garage sales, etc. I have a 1968 Sony 5000F, 1974(?) Accuphase T-101, 1969(?) Sony 5130, and a Kenwood 2002. The first 3 have been serviced by a well known vintage electronics technician (Mike Zuccaro). All of them sound very good. With Accuphase and the Sony 5000F doing the best job. I have even tested the Sony and Accuphase along side a couple of my friends tuners (McIntosh MR78, Magnum Dynalab Etude). All of us agreed they were at least as good sound wise (maybe even a little better), and definitely better in reception and quietness. If you do the math, you will see that 60's and 70's vintage equipment would go for many thousands of dollars today. And still probably not have the same build quality. You can find some great info on tuners at: http://geocities.com/tunerinfo/#mcintosh Regards, Chris ------------------ 2 channel Klipsch Cornwalls (1978) Cary CAD 300SEI amp (WE 300B's, various NOS 6SN7's) Arcam Alpha MCD cd player Accuphase T-101 Tuner HT Klipsch KG2.5 (front & rear) Klipsch KV2 (center) Klipsch SW12 (sub) Marantz SR7000 receiver Toshiba DTS DVD JVC SVHS VCR Sony Hi8 VCR
  13. My Cary 300SEI is on it's way to Kirk for a sub woofer out add on. I have an 8-9 year old Klipsch 12" sub in HT system. Will this be a decent match for my Cornwalls? I could just have 2 cables (1 for my HT amp and 1 for my Cary) available at the back of my present sub and simply switch cables for music and HT. Or, ....I could do it the fun way and get another sub strictly for music. Any suggestions? 14. Wow, those look gorgeous! My Cornwalls are at an antique restoration shop be gone over for the second time as I type. I had been thinking about glass tops for them and after seeing yours, I'm sold. Questions for the group: Is there some sort of downside to putting glass on top? How 'bout other items resting on the glass? What about replacing or adding to the dampening material inside? Thanks, Chris PS After taking my speakers apart for the 3rd time now, one thing baffles me. How can speaker cable matter much at all when you consider the connections inside the cabinet from the terminals to the crossovers and crossovers to the drivers. By that I mean every single speaker I have seen on the inside so far has very average wire inside. I've seen B&W, Klipsch, Martin-Logan, AR, Bose, McIntosh, and a few others. All of them use a very ordinary looking wire. What gives? ------------------ 2 channel Klipsch Cornwalls (1978) Cary CAD 300SEI amp (WE 300B's, various NOS 6SN7's) Arcam Alpha MCD cd player Accuphase T-101 Tuner HT Klipsch KG2.5 (front & rear) Klipsch KV2 (center) Klipsch SW12 (sub) Marantz SR7000 receiver Toshiba DTS DVD JVC SVHS VCR Sony Hi8 VCR
  15. Bob, If the Cornwall components you bought on eBay are the ones I think they are, I was able to look at them at the seller's house. He lives about a mile from me (Redondo Beach, CA.) and I was considering them for spare parts for my CW's. Everything seemed to be in excellent shape. In fact, while I was there he was replacing the tweeter diaphragms. They were not the Alnico type. Anyway, he was truly a nice guy and invited me in to his house to give a listen to his all K-Horn home theater system. It was driven by a 1970's vintage (I believe) Concept receiver. Talk about LOUD! It was incredible! Anyway, good luck with the cabinet project and BTW his cabinets for auction were not nearly as rough looking in person as the photos on eBay looked. In fact, they looked better than mine did before I refinished them. Now mine look nearly new. Shipping cabinets alone by truck couldn't cost more than $100-150 at most (I'm in the shipping business.). Maybe another pair of cabinets will pop up. 16. The sub was powered by a Hsu sub amplifier when I was there. The electronics are by Cyrus Brenneman (The pre is on the middle shelf on the left, the amps are the monoblocs on the bottom and the sub amp is in the light wood box on the top shelf.). The cdp is a Rega Planet. Dr. Edgar's systems are not necessarily priced in the stratosphere. The CB electronics mostly are. The sound is awesome. 17. Brian, You may want to replace both tweeter diaphragms at the same time. If you order them from Klipsch, you'll get some decent instructions on replacement. I can't say anything about price difference or instructional materials from other sources as I only spoke to Klipsch. They did however, offer to help with phone support if there were any questions. As far as the crossovers are concerned, you can do a search here and get way more information and opinions than you probably need. Mine have the original "Type B" and sound fantastic. Some people swear by the ALK's. Check out the picture of mine. They were not in nearly as good shape as yours sound to be. All I've done is lightly sanded and rubbed them with linseed oil. Have Fun, Chris PS I concurr with TP regarding tube amplification. 19. maxg - Just to clarify, when my feeble mind thinks of HT (HT to me is Home Theater.) media, it's DVD movies and such. Not DVDa and SACD. 20. Tubes for HT?...funny, I called Cary Audio Design last week with a question regarding my CAD 300SEI (possible installation of a sub woofer out). It turns out the phone was answered by Dennis Had. He seemed to be in a chatty mood, so I asked him a couple of questions. One of the qustions being what were his thoughts on tubes in HT. He told me they were working on a variable channel tube amp possibly based on their "Rocket" series of amps. Something available in 1, 2, or 3 channel configuration. Also, when I bought my first tube amp (Decware SE84c), I was so blown away by the sound quality I called Steve @ Decware and asked about HT applications. He stated that there were a few people out there using multiple Zen amps in HT with excellent results. After some consideration, I decided against it due to cost and my belief that most HT media was not designed or recorded with high fidelity in mind. Still, it's sounds intriguing... 21. Kelly, Thanks ever so much for your response. Especially in light of the administrative duties that come with a real estate purchase (Congrats!). We all await further info. However, I have one more question..... What the heck are the differences between moving coil and moving magnet cartridges? So far as my feeble mind can understand, they may require different types of phono stages (pre amps?). Any help here is greatly appreciated. This one has really got me. Let's recap... This is what I have so far: 1. Horns - good 2. Tubes - good (especially with horns) 3. SS amps - can be good, however see #2 4. Cables - need not cost mega bucks and can be fun to DIY 5. Tuners - "Vintage" is good. Do the math (inflation + yen problems + planned obsolescence = vintage better) $500 tuner in 1970 would cost $6,968.01 today. 6. Tweaks - can be good, don't have to cost much. For example 3/4" granite slab with Sorbothane underneath for $50-$60 is as good or better than $200-$1,000 "Voodoo" composites. All I'm missing is vinyl...to be continued... Chris PS After seeing the time signature of your post, all I have to say is "Are you nuts?". ------------------ 2 channel Klipsch Cornwalls (1978) Cary CAD 300SEI amp (WE 300B's, various NOS 6SN7's) Arcam Alpha MCD cd player Sony 5000F Tuner (1968) HT Klipsch KG2.5 (front & rear) Klipsch KV2 (center) Klipsch SW12 (sub) Marantz SR700 receiver Toshiba DTS DVD JVC SVHS VCR Sony Hi8 VCR
  22. 6 months ago I was happy listening to my HT system for music. Now I have tubes, horns, and a vintage tuner. (My wife thanks you Kelly.) Next stop...vinyl. And I've already put the proverberial cart before the horse here. I've been cruising the local thrift shops and have picked up over 100 LP's. This before even owning a turntable. Geez, what a loser.... Anyway, a few questions: 1. What are the best methods for cleaning and maintaining vinyl? (Let's not go berserk here, please.) 2. What about storage? The paper inserts seem cheap and abrasive. 3. Turntable recs? Is "vintage" applicable here? Seems like you can spend all you want on a TT. Where does the law of diminishing return kick in? 4. How about reasonable phono stages (phono pre amp?). 5. Anything I missed? I've cruised AudioAsylum's vinyl forum and it's just too damned technical for me. Kelly, (and the rest of you experienced type kooks here for that matter) it's your fault I'm in this mess. You'd better have some answers or it's gonna get ugly and someone's gonna get hurt... 24. Based on what I've experienced, the Planet has wonderful sound. Let me explain...I have been to 2 "meetings" of the SoCal Horn Group at the shop of Dr. Bruce Edgar (of Edgarhorn). First let me state that Dr. Edgar is a wonderful person. He loves to share his ideas and listen to others. Second, the reference system he uses consists of a $21,500 pair of Cyrus Brenneman "Silver Reference" all tube monoblocs, a $5,000 C.B. "Euphonics" line stage preamplifier, a pair of $12,000 Edgarhorn "TitanHorns", and a Rega Planet cdp, all connected with what looks like mid to high end cables. Oh, and lest I forget, Dr. Edgar's unbelievable bass horn. It's a 6'x4'x4' beautiful wooden cabinet driven by an external Hsu amplifier. I'm guessing this baby goes for many thousands. Anyway, Dr. Edgar is very, very picky about what music he plays. I say this because I was surprised to see him using the mid-fi Planet. When I asked him why he used the Planet in an otherwise very expensive system, he smiled and said "Because it sounds good.". Good enough for me. This system has the most incredible sound I'ver ever heard, bar none. Needless to say, I'll soon be adding a Planet to my system. 25. My guess is that you would get some sort of protective benefit from a "poly" type coating. At the same time, with only Linseed oil to protect mine, they seem ready for the long haul. Although, I did have them professionally "touched up". Which included some fixing of very, very slight delaminating on the bottoms. So my choice would be to use as little wood preparation as possible. The wood Klipsch used for these speakers is very high quality when compared to something in a similar price range today. I'm guessing Cornwall's made with the same quality today would go for $4,000-6,000 a pair. Maybe more. Have Fun, Chris PS I see by your post that you are from Fremont, CA. My speakers came from nearby Orinda. They are on "permanent loan" from an old and dear friend of mine who had them in storage for the last 10-15 years. Yeah, like he'll EVER see them again.
