  1. Piranha, Haven't been on the forum much in recent months, but I'll take a crack at this one. Seeing as how, according to your profile, you live in the Pasadena area, you might want to get in touch with Brooks Berdan. He's just down the 210 in Monrovia. Brooks sells and sets up as many TT's as just about anybody and has quite a lofty reputation in the high end business. His website is www.brooksberdanltd.com. I think he handles around 5-6 different TT manufacturers, including VPI. Had the Scout been available when I bought my Clearaudio Champion, I very well might own one today. That being said, the Champion sounds great to me. Good Luck, Chris ---------------- On 5/19/2005 8:38:02 AM Piranha wrote: Attention: Calling all vinyl gurus! Thanks in advance for your time in helping me achieve vinyl bliss. http://forums.klipsch.com/idealbb/images/smilies/3.gif"> ----------------

  3. A very similar item can be had at Handmade Electronics online much cheaper. 4. Mark, I don't know the guy that emailed me regarding my impressions of the Peach. I'm not even sure how he got my email address. He did mention installing a remote himself after purchase from you. BTW, I'm just fine turning the volume control knob on the Peach instead of pushing a button on a remote control...even if that means getting up off the couch and walking alllll the way to the audio rack. Whew! I get tired just thinking about it! Are we a lazy society or what? Chris ---------------- P.S. Remind your friend we have no remote control. If I did have remote, I would have sold 500 Peaches by now. I get more email questions about remote control than anything thing else by a 20:1 margin. In some sense it feels like no one cares anything about sound, just remote! ----------------
  5. Mark, Right now I'm running a pair of MC225's with the Peach to my Cornwall's. Considering that McIntosh supposedly rates the power output of their amps very conservativly, I guess I'm getting 55+ watts per side. With that in mind, I wouldn't want 20 watts, 40 watts would be ok and anything over 50 would be my choice. I've tried (all per side) 1.5 watts (Decware Zen), 13 watts SE (Cary), 15 watts PP (Brenneman), 20 watts PP (Scott 299), 25 watts PP (Scott 299B, MC225), 30 watts PP (ARC Classic 60), 50 watts (MC225 pair) and a few SS amps. With every amp I've tried, there seems to be an area in the volume control where the sound is the best. If I go too low, something seems to be missing. When I get past the "sweet spot" area, the amps seem to be working too hard. Chris PS I've traded a few emails with a guy supposedly looking to buy a Peach. He seems very interested in remote control operation. Sounds like he's ready to order one. ---------------- On 2/12/2005 9:51:51 AM mdeneen wrote: For those who might have some interest in pCAT somewhere down the road should I focus on building 20W, 40W or 75W model? 7. Fini, After noticing the winning bidders handle on the above mentioned Cornwalls, I'm guessing you have a new pair of speakers? Maybe another WWE stage name? Chris
  8. I'd get both. There is much great music that is still only available on vinyl. Not to mention that quite a bit of new music comes out in both cd and vinyl but not SACD. That being said, if something I want to buy is available on cd, vinyl and SACD, I'll get the SACD. To my ears, well done vinyl sounds best followed by SACD and then a big gap to cd. Right now we're listening to Janis Ian's "Billie's Bones" on vinyl. This is one of the best albums I've bought in quite awhile. Very highly recommended. Next up are the three new Eric Clapton SACD's my friend that works at UMG dropped off a little while ago. Chris
  9. Aren't Sundays the best? I get my Peet's fix from a coffee stand/bar that's located inside the convenience store at a Shell gas station about 2 miles from my house. I pass 3 Starbucks on the way. My son gets up pretty early for a 10yo (about 6:00am) and we drive over there to get coffee for my wife and I and a Soy Coco for him. On the way home we pick up bagels at a local bakery. The music on Sunday mornings is strictly classical. My son is convinced it "helps his brain". This Sunday it was Holst: The Planets, Britten: Four Sea Interludes - Bernstein follwed by the NPR radio show "From The Top". I like this kind of Sunday better than golf. Boy, am I getting hokey! At about 9:00 I head out for a couple hours of tennis. I don't deserve a life this good.

Interesting so far, but one thing is driving me crazy, it's that snap crackle, pop I get on every friggin record. Now the TT is s decent but not audiophile and it does have a really good Shure cartridige and appears to be adjusted properly for tracking etc. I've wiped down several of the 25 or so lp's I have with a mixture of filtered water, dentured alcohol and a few drops of kitchen soap, but still with the noise. So what is this all about: A) Dirty Records worn out records C) worn out needle D) All of the above. If D then how the hell do I determine what is what and what can be eliminated. Would lightening up the tracking help, etc. (By the way I am not talking about skipping, rumble etc. just the rice krispies thing-none of these lps by the way has a serious skip on them) By the way my initial impression is that classical music goes very well with vinyl, much more rounded/liquid although on most of them it seems I'm sitting a few seats farther back in the theater than I'm used to. On rock/pop the message is more mixed, some I like on lp's but most of it would be better played with cds. I have only one very losely definined "jazz" album Benny Goodman at Carnegie Hall so I can't make any statements about jazz as yet. ---------------- thebes, Funny you should mention Snap, Crackle, Pop. Last night I put on Sting's "Brand New Day" SACD and could definitely hear what sounded like purposely inserted SC&P between some of the tracks. I've also read that other artists (or their recording engineers) have added similar noise in the recording process. Supposedly it can add "credibility" to a recording. Seems kinda weird to me. Chris
  12. Paul, Please give it rest regarding Allan. He is NOT a liar. I really don't think he would even know how to be dishonest. I would buy a used car from Allan, let alone a record. Let the people involved settle the issue regarding the record in question. Allan, Please give it a rest regarding the Parrot. Think about the peculiar talents of a real Parrot. A Parrot repeats what it hears without really knowing what they are saying. Not to mention, what can you accomplish by arguing with a Parrot? Pauly want a cracker? Pauly is a cracker? Boomac, You're way off target about Josh. WAAAAY off. The incessant arguing that appears on this board is waaaay boring and getting old. Not to mention, the original thread that started this most recent outbreak (and I quote, "Allan Songer's dirty vinyl") was possibly ill conceived. I say possibly because my pea brain thought it appeared out of line when I first read it. Allan takes his music and his record collecting VERY seriously. Both he and Josh are two of the finest people I know. Thanks, Chris PS. Sometimes a warped record will play just fine. Also, you can try one of the various record clamps available. They start at about 20 bucks or so and go up to the hundreds. However, clamps will usually only help with slightly warped records. Lastly, go over to www.audioasylum.com and click on "Vinyl". You can then do a search using the word "warp" and get tons of info on how to deal with warped records. Chris

I think they are currently back in business with a smaller portfolio. I have the older White 4400s. Quite good. There are undoubtedly many more recent introductions available that I am not aware of. I don't follow this end of the market too closely anymore. Griff probably has a better handle on it. I think the bad rap attendent to EQ is from the old cheapo-consumer "ADC SoundShaper" days. These $250 buck (or less) units are not useful, really. There were a million versions of that under the brands of ADC, BSR, dBx and others. All of them came from Aztec in Taiwan. Minor cosmetic differences. mdeneen ---------------- Mark/Griffinator, I did some research on the EQ's you mentioned and they all have about a zillion knobs. It makes my pea-brain spin just looking at them. Is there something a tad bit more, shall we say, consumer friendly that you guys can recommend? Or is it possible that the units you speak of are much easier to operate than they appear? I'm guessing they would work well for EQ'ing someones listening room not to mention individual recordings. Thanks, Chris

My Peach (paired with a friends ARC Classic 60) definitely sounds better overall than does my Scott 299B. However, I do miss the Scott's tone controls when listening to recordings that may be bass heavy or have other problems. Would some sort of external equalizer help? Or might it negatively impact the sound quality by being an additional circuit in the signal path? Chris
  18. Boomac, Sorry, I didn't read the post as an "inside joke". After seeing the heading I jumped the gun. My apologies. Chris
  19. Two issues here for me - I can't in my wildest dreams imagine the Jazz Sensei selling a record that wasn't EXACTLY as described. Additionally, I would be surprised if Allan did not "under-grade" anything he gave OR sold to anyone. Heck, the time I went to his home for a listening session he practically FORCED me to take home some records FREE! Allan is one of the good guys! Even for a Limousine Liberal Democrat. As far as differences in sound, some people say it's all in the RIAA curve used in recording and phono stage amplification. Ask Andy K what kind of terse response I got from a big time speaker design guy who spoke at one of our SoCal Horn Group get togethers when I asked him why vinyl sounds better to me. Regardless of what he said (and it wasn't pretty), I still think vinyl sounds better. Regards, Chris
  20. There is a guy here in Southern California that makes exotic audio cabling for many ultra-highend audio "Salons" and cable companies all over the country. He even makes clones (on request) of some of the well known super-expensive cable companies popular models. While the parts cost involved with cable making is more than I thought, the mark-up on the retail end is INSANE. I've bought some very cool looking (no audible difference) power cables from him for $60 that I'd seen at a very famous local dealer for $400! I found him while looking for parts I needed in making DIY speaker wire (Jon Risch's "Twisted Cross Connect" design). Chris
  21. Fini, There is a Citation restoration/repair specialist down here in Socal. Howard Bardach is the second generation owner of www.audiospecialist.com. He is also a Citation collector. His shop is a great place just to visit and look at his collection. Howard checked over and did some minor repairs on 2 pairs of Dynaco A-25 speakers for me. Very reasonable prices and a great guy to talk with. Chris
  22. Neo, Put down the remote and step slowly away from the Klipsch....there are places you can go for help. Go see/hear some live music! Just kidding, Chris
  23. Went to the Hollywood Bowl last night with the family for "World Music Festival 2004 @ the Bowl", "Hip-Hop Night". It was the wife's idea for a family outing. She thought our 20yo daughter (in town from school with bum/loser boyfriend in tow), 10yo son might both enjoy the music(?) and I should just grin and bear it. Surprise! We had a GREAT time. Everytime we go to the Bowl I'm reminded what a great time can be had there in the summertime. A picnic in the trees beforehand, my son feeding the dear until I remembered about the West Nile problems deer can carry...oops! Get away from those mangy creatures right now! Anyway, the weather is perfect and the newly renovated stage and sound system are great! Lineup Control Machete - hip-hop/gansta rappers from Monterey, Mexico. What the h*** were they talking about? A lot of crotch grabbing and marching around stage. Too loud. Give them a "5" at best. Thomas Mapfumo - "Chimurenga" band leader/singer from Zimbabwe. Pretty nice music with great dancers, if a little monontinous. Once again, can't understand a word. Give them a "7". Kid Koala - Scratcher/DJ from Toronto, Canada. Pretty interesting sounds and best of all, he's into vinyl! Give him a "7.5" Wyclef Jean, et al - Founder of the Fugee's and trying to get back to that level of fame. BIG surprise! Great entertainer! Did some classic hip-hop, played better than passable guitar, and covered very well some songs from Bob Dylan to Bob Marley. Lots of fun and got 15,000 yuppyfied honkys up and dancing. Best song/quote - "I may smoke Bush, but I'm votin' for Kerry!". Fun stuff. Give him a "8.5". Support Live Music! Chris
  24. Maybe Frank Sinatra's "Songs For Swingin' Lovers!"? Great record!
  25. Allan, Went to see Rebecca Parris at the Bakery last weekend. Wow! She was fantastic! Not to mention she had Tom Warrington and Joe La Barbera behind her (didn't catch Tom the piano players last name). Great show! Have you tried the new Asian (Beacon) restaurant across the street from the Bakery? Supposed to be great. We're going back to it this weekend. Chris
