  1. I actually did use the "Through" YPAO setting under the EQ to not use the automatic settings. Pure Direct sounds terrible to me. If the Yamaha is giving me accurate reproduction of the sound as they advertise, then that's ok. I'll have to learn to tweak the EQ. My fear was that something was wrong with my 5.5's as they were cannons with the Onkyo...but the horns always bothered me too. Now the highs are smoother and less harsh to me. This AVR is a steep learning curve. I hope to figure it out at some point...
  2. Well, my "problem" is the new AVR. I hooked up a pair of Acoustech PL-76 that I had running off a Pioneer VSX-822. The PL's have a lot of low end with the Pioneer. The Yamaha flattens out the sound. I played with the parametric eq a little and what a difference. Hooked the 5.5's back up with the slightly tweaked eq and I have some of my cannons back. Now I have to play with the eq to tweak the sound a bit. I never thought there would be this much of a difference between receivers. Thanks for all the advise. If I picked up the Crites tweeters and crossovers how much of a change would there be in the quality of sound?
  3. I can't remember the Onkyo model. Last night I was playing with AVR settings and was able to get some low end back. I'm not a super enthusiast so there are WAY too many settings for me to play with. I'm used to bass, treble, and balance I've noticed that the Yamaha has mellowed out the horns, which to me had always been somewhat harsh when I had the Onkyo. I did make sure that both woofers were working in each speaker. When I get more time I'll play around more.
  4. I was using a 15 year old Onkyo receiver. I hope to have time on Sunday to check the 5.5's out. Thanks for all the suggestions.
  5. My Yamaha is about 6 months old. When I get time I will poke around and hopefully find out what's going on.
  6. Thanks for all the suggestions. I'll mess with the YPAO and try them with a different AVR. One quick thing I did check was polarity, which was ok,
  7. Where would I find replacement crossovers other than through Klipsch, if available?
  8. The room hasn't changed. I honestly don't remember too much about the sound before the Yamaha, other than I hadn't been happy with it for a while. Using Pure Direct mode with the Yamaha results in a dreadful, flat tone. Using some enhancements, but bypassing the EQ is better, but still not what I remember. Bass response seems to be nowhere near where it should be.
  9. I've had a set of 5.5's for about 18 years. Now using them with a Yamaha receiver and they don't have the bass punch I remember from years past. I have tried room calibration and bypassing the AVR EQ. There isn't any more wow factor listening to music. Is it time to finally replace these beasts?
  10. That's why I'm here asking questions. I found a BIC PL200 favorably reviewed online. Reputable brand?
  11. Roughly a 14x25 room with woodflooring. I was told by a salesman today to stay away from down firing because it would be too boomy. He also said to stay with an 8 or 10. Confused doesn't begin to describe me right now. I was listening to an Energy 10" that didn't seem to bad. Seemed to have tight bass without a lot of ringing boom. No 12" to compare. Music performance is important. I want to be able to hear it, not just feel it.
  12. Is the Sub 10 worth it for music or am I better off spending the extra $100 for the 12HG?
  13. I was looking at a Sub 12HG on Amazon for $299 or the Sub 10 for $199. How does the 12HG compare to the RW12D? I'm nervous about grille and speaker damage and like the idea of down firing for that reason.I don't need to knock stuff off the walls, just fill in the lows in music and movies.
  14. I'm kinda new to this. I haven't shopped for a sub since around 1990. Is a 12" sub too big to sound clean with music? I listen to primarily guitar driven hard rock. I was looking at the down firing because our cats may damage the front grille. Is the sw-450 comparable in quality to the RW12d? I would hate to buy a sub and not be able to use it for music...
  15. I'm trying to match a decent sub with a set of Klipsch KSB 3.1 bookshelf speakers. Budget is $400 max. I currently have an old Yamaha YST-SW60 sub. It has, in my opinion, very muddy sounding bass. I borrowed a Klipsch RPW-10 and liked the crisp bass it put out. I'm looking at the Klipsch RW12d, SW450, and KW100. I like the idea of down firing because I don't want cats clawing either a grill or speaker. If front firing is the way to go I'll try and figure something out. The sub will be used 50/50 TV and music. I will have to place the sub against a flat wall. Also looking at a Sub12HG. Will the 10" Synergy have clean low end? ANY advise will be appreciated.
