  1. Thanks for input guys ,since posting here I came across a post in two channel .which has several opinions on cabinet construction ie.bracing, stiffening strips on back dampening.it may be a couple of months befor ill have free time to build.so I been stock piling ideas .I'm leaning towards 1" ply just to add what rigidity it will provide .I agree probably wont here a difference, and I'm leaning towards replicating the bracing and dampening of the stock cabinet .as someone stated in the other post ,with the equipment and engineers at klipsch. Iwould tend to believe they have put together the best combination .
  2. Story is I bought a pair of corn lll on eBay.Ups destroyed one cabinet the other has two crushed corners. The insurance paid. I kept the one with the crushed corners. So I have one complete speaker to get my internal dim.I also have a pair of 84 corn ll that have the same bracing you describe,With no dampening on the interior.I guess what I am wondering ,since ill be building from scratch. Would it benefit the acoustics of the speaker to build out of 1" vs 3/4 and ad some additional internal bracing.Or would it just be overkill .As far as the dampening on the corn lll it has what looks to be sheets of (shipping foam like I use at work).sort of draped from the top to both sides.I just dont know if I should try to replicate the factory dampening .Or maybe do a search on speaker dampening here,I recall a thread were someone was discussing some type of sound deadening mat. If anyone has any experience or ideas they would like to share please feel free to throw your two cents in. Thanks Stacy
  3. In the near future I will be building a pair of cabinets for the corn lll 's . I understand the internal volume dim is to be kept the same. I read somewhere that a more rigid cabinet is better,so I was thinking of 1" ply and some internal bracing. If a more rigid cabinet is better , what is to be expected of the sonic improvement. Also I picked up on some guys putting some type of padding on the inside ,would anyone share there insight as to what it does to improve sound.if I remember correctly it would only be used on motor board and sides.but the memory isn't what it used to be,not that it was all that special to start with. Thanks for any input.
  4. Cool looking amp.l have never seen a vertical configuration.best of luck with your sale.
  5. Erik , I checked out the decware site pretty cool.it was definitely educational.do you have any experience using there buffer or gain stage device.
  6. Thanks erIk2a3 for taking the time to share your experience, and the link.I have not give up on the notion of a tube pre and ss amp,I have come to the conclusion I need to further my education.all the info is truly appreciated.
  7. thanks Dean ,You probably saved me a costly mistake.I'm really enjoying the k horns, the more I listen the better they sound if thats possible.
  8. Thanks daddy dee, I'm currently switching between ss pre, tube amp combo and a ss pre ,ss amp combo they both sound good to me .If i understand correctly I would get a fuller tube sound using a tube pre amp with either amp. I realize what sounds good to one individual isn't true for everyone. With that in mind ,there must be some Merritt to the majority consensus of a quality tube pre. With the vast combined experience of the members here is there any particular pre amp that gets a consistently good review. Stacy
  9. I'm New to this hobby, and was wondering if I use a tube pre amp with a solid state amp would the sound be comparable to a integrated tube amp if so any recommendation on pre amp will be used with k horns .budget would be around 500$ thanks in advance for any advice.
  10. sorry if I'm cluttering your post to sell the center but I have a pair of nos Boston acoustic c r9 I would part with. These and your tower and this center ad a sub .might be a nice 5.1 surround.
  11. While I am not educated in electronics I am interested .Thanks for posting links .interesting reading.
  12. let me start buy saying this forum is a great tool and there is a wealth of knowledge that is freely shared in my previeous post i ask the question do different caps sound different and recieved several replies .dean wescott was of the opinion they do .witch stirred my intrest so i contacted him to discuss it futher durring my initial conversation dean filled me in on the LB 76 ( for the greens horn like me ) was the last speaker and filter PwK designed with klipsch the company .dean had just recieved the components to build a prototype and ask if i would be his gennie pig and i agreed . iwas excited to be maybe one of the first to listen to this filter . iwas even more nervice to have to report what i thought .about a week later they arrive .do to personal constraints it was 3 or 4 days befor i could put my k horns back together .i had also sent my k77 s and k 55 s to have dean remove the monster cable from them witch he did thanks agin dean i also got new diaphrams for k 77 s and horn to driver gaskets from mr crites . so i get busy putting everything back together only to find i have a terrible speaker balance issue ,i could adjust it on the reciever to center the image but with any adjustment to volume up or down it would be drastically off .after some input from the more than helpful members here it turned out to be my reciever . with that fixed it was time for some serious listen ing . at a low listening they sounded great but a moderate volume there was a skunk in midrange so i report to dean after a short conversation we decide to try the filters in my bells they have the same mid driver low and behold the bells sound wonderful .so its determined there is a issue with k 55 s in k horns dean had spoke to bob and he offered some things to check .so i agin put filters back in k horns i also tightened the k 55 s about a1\4 turn the skunk was a leak from the driver to horn myfault i just didnt get it tight enough .after a short listen with the k77s i pulled the ct125s out of my bells and put them in the k horns so after reading this short novel i bet you are wondering how they sound i wish i were more literate with the termanoligy do describe how amazing they sound . they are crystal clear sounds like there are instruments lined up from one corner to the outher and if you close your eyes you would swear don henly was in the room with you with the eagles playing i have had only one friend listen so far he says they by far are the best speakers he has ever heard he comented on being able to hear all the different instuments playing at the same time .so to say i love the sound of my k horns woul be a huge understatement i would also like to say thank you to dean and bob for their help they both are verry shareing of their knowledge i have done business with both and it is refreshing to deal with honest and careing people for a change .and to that fact they both know the LORD coinsidence i think not . ps bob when my wallet heals from buying the k horns and filters ill be ordering another pair of ct125s for my bells i was on fence about k77s but am sure now they are the way to go and wish you a speedy recovery stacy
  13. Hi dont know if I'm to late but i was lucky enough to find a pair of k horns close to me and affordable would the Scott be a good match if so I'm from Terre haute in. May be able to work out a pick up if you are not to far away would not have a problem with the shipping if it deemed necessary let me know what you think thanks for the consideration Stacy.
  14. For that kind of money they would have to be in really really nice condition I mho I would make sure all drivers worked correctly as with any speaker of that age you will want to up date the crossover so I take that in consideration if you are patient there are some good deals to be had I was lucky to get a pair of corn ll for 450 cosmetic6/10 if you have not heard corns see if anyone near you will give you a listen they are some really nice speakers.2nd only to k horn in my opinion good luck Stacy
  15. Nice job I would be curious how many amps per channel and roughly what does it cost to build something like it Stacy
  16. Dennie the receiver is a nad c730 it has two totally different knobs one to control volume one to control balance I wonder if they need cleaned .just bought a new old stock sae tuner I haven't opened the factory sealed box maybe tomorrow after work ill check it out I dont know if it has pre outs tonight I just hooked cd player straight to amp to get some listening in thanks for the reply. Stacy
  17. It was my receiver was going cd player to receiver then receiver pre out to amp so i could use volume control of the receiver and balance controls . When i go cd player to amp their is no balance issue with either amp .what do u think is wrong with receiver is it the balance control or the volume control because the balance kept changing with volume level ie low volume then correct balance then any increase or decrease of volume would shift balance?
  18. Well Rick I worked till 10:00 Sat so I just got started I switched L&R channels on my amp and the balance issue followed so i believe it is in amp I have to go to niece birthday so i am going to try the same test with the solid state amp when I get home if you would like to see pic do a search under recapping k horn advice thanks for checking to see if i worked out my problem I think it may be in my tube amp I'm going to check all connections from amp to cross over this afternoon Stacy
  19. the k horns are new to me I only listened to them very little before the crossover upgrade so I cant say for sure I will check all wires and component connections after work probably try a different c d player also .I did use the pipe insulation trick to seal them to corner made a nice improvement didn't have to glue it went on snug .hope I can get balance issue worked out this eve this is my first set of k horns and the new x o are new Dean g so I'm really looking forward toenjoying them thanks for your insight Stacy
  20. I was wondering if anyone has had this problem.I just installed my new xo in my khorns and am trying to do some critical listening but one speaker is substantially louder I can correct it with the balance but if i change the volume it is right back to bring way off again I don't believe it is in the amp I've tried a jolida tube amp and a nad solid state I'm pretty sure its not the xo.I will double check all connections this eve could it be cd player . I also have a sae pre amp that I have not used would it help if the balance issue is in the component train . Just looking for some ideas thanks. Stacy
  21. Congats on your belles love to see pics are they cane grills or the black?
  22. thanks everyone for the great advice I believe ill try without any hour if it does not stay on I will glue it .I love your take on prototype William my friends say um a perfectionist so I to usually require a prototype .
  23. I understand the use of split pipe insulation works well I would be curious as to how you affix it to the k horn I really dont want to use screws I thought about Velcro or two sided tape .just wondering what you have tried and what worked the best thanks again for any help Stacy
