    Yes Tour

Yes Yes is awesome. Happened to see some live concert vids on you tube yesterday, and inspired by that, proceeded to the disc Classic Yes hits album. I especially like track 4, Starship Troopers, in the latter half its full of building tempos and searing guitar. With thought provoking lyrics. YES! it was nice and loud.
  2. Nice score man! We should start one them scavenger shows getting great stereo gear for dirt cheap! Check out my profile and know that its just the tip of the iceberg. I make funny money from this adventure. My latest CL find was a RC 52ii for 150, So good find, and best of luck with the next honey pot. Also Mint RF 7's, for 2K. I have a lead on those if someones lookin'.
  3. Severe ice storm, 4 days alone without power/stereo. Entire city scape altered. I'm living in a disaster area. 1500 bucks(scam) out for tree cutting, and I did most of the work myself. A country boy can survive-Thankfully I am a country boy.=wood heat! <Bad week sunshine? >Wot? Wot sunshine? [st]
  4. My sentiments are with those affected by this blatant act, this towards innocent people pursuing meaniful lives for health and humanity. May those scum bag terrorists rot slowly.......die in misery so justly earned.
  5. Well checking craigslist electronics obsessively as I do today, I saw Klipsch center channel. So i called him up, $200 for a RC 52ii. Ok had to have it. Get over there an hour later to his smallish apartment and he has RF 7s and the whole room amped up with Klipsch speakers. Told him it must be hell to live here with all this gear! He also had a pair of KS 14 surrrounds that he wanted 100 for. So I offered 250 for the center and surrounds and they are in perfect condition. My first reference line speaker! The RC 52 is on amazon for 369 right now, so I feel alright about it. Plus the KS 14s as a bonus. I spent an hour dialing it in with my CF3s and it meshes pretty good, just does not have the size/volume to match perfectly. I'll mostly use it for movies anyway. It is a great sounding speaker though. Tested it with Avatar quick and it seemed to carry the center audio weight with ease. This guy is also selling mint looking RF 7s for 2k if anyones lookin'.
  6. Wow great price. What a score. Dual 12s is my desire. My latest catch was very nice 5.5s for $120. I always smirk when knowing I have made money from all the systems I have had. I think I'm up about 2k now, and the current set up could still be sold for a fat profit! Not that I would let it go though. Enjoy the power and emotion!
  7. Well heres my ham fisted Diy of the horn. Would have liked to get all the way down to the edge but it contracted upwards and would'nt stay. For a quick job its fine. But I think it could be better. I will try something thicker/dense like dynamat when i can find it cheap. I could just cut that foam off easy. The results seem to be the same after I sprayed the rubber on. Tighter dispersion at high volume. I seem to recollect seeing theater horns with heavily coated textured back sides. Can't remember where tho. I also ripped a stud for 2x2s and glued them in around the horn cutout area. These made a stout box to stiffen the front panel. Tucked a little fiberglass in the side area as well. This did help noticably in tightening bass. I did'nt run anything across or to the back as I had no 1x3s at hand. It seems putting some near the top of the cabinet would help resonance controll to. I have read several speaker bracing threads and may continue with that project, duh, it seems bracing to my ears does work to subdue the energy.
  8. Yes wuzzer I agree. I will likely sell some old receivers and take 50 dvds and cds and sell them to raise funds for a cap job. I have a Iron and lots of line but i don't want to burn and screw up a one shot deal. Learning to solder for dummys is a book I do not have. Even tho I am trying to avoid brightness I do want speakers to reveal the information. So I did stop at the car audio place and a 1ft by 3ft piece of dynamat was $25. I told the owner that was to much but he suggested from experience that I should try the spray can Flex Seal liquid rubber as seen on tv stuff. He said they spray it in hard to reach places in vehicles for deadening. So off to Ace bought a 12 buck can of this stuff. Maybe I should have bought the dynamat? Well its sunny and 50 today so my 4 tractrix are going to get sprayed with this rubber stuff. I'll report back if this crap works. I can always put damping material over it if needed. I'll report back on that. And Brian, I grew up by Sandstone out in the 'sticks'. On a farm, chopped our own wood, drank fresh milk and hunted cute rabbits and pretty deer. Along the Kettle river I fished my lunch and carried a boombox everywhere. Haha, even had it strapped to front of my bike, I went hands free and played air drums to Phill Collins In the air tonight. I can still feel it lol. I ended up playing drums for 10 years after that. Go figure. Never made a mint jamming out but it was fun playing music in the barn with friends and family. To make a long story short I still love my land in Minnesota, But the wind blew us down to So Dak. I'm in a big city now and run a thriving catering business with my wife. I'm hella busy. There. I dont like to share info on the internet. But I also have an extensive shotgun collection, just waiting to blast the first fool to come in with out knockin' lol. I'll try to get some speaker work done this weekend. Those Crites titanium diaphrams are a absolute bargain that I put in some 5.5s. The factory ones were horrible in comparison. Those play the highs well outside the speakers. Drums and effects were clearly panning the entire room last night. To bad they are not available for the CF series When I get the spare change I am definately going to buy new crossovers for 1 pair of my 5.5s, so sorry Klipsch I wont be buying new speakers from you anytime soon, Only the RF line generates interest from me and they are out of my price range. I'll stick to the classics. As for changing sound, every single recording is different. Even master tapes. I dont have an EQ anymore but it would be great to have one with a remote once your setteled into couch potatoe mode for a listening session. Purests scoff at eqs, and maybe I cannot find the time to hunt down or afford the rare premium recordings. The quest will never end my friends. Stay thirsty!
  9. Great work Brian! I'm Brian to haha. Plus we have Cf3s, funny stuff. And I grew up Minnesota south of Duluth in the sticks far from an audio store. Reception was bad there. Maybe 4 radio staions and 3 Tv channels. Thats when music got me. Islolated in the woods with public radio classical and jazz. Worked all summer and blew it all at best buy for a pioneer system, what is now known as B.P.S. I was 14 and didnt know jack, but sure loved having 12 in woofers and a CD player. Anyway I was hoping you could describe somehow how the sound changed after these Mods to the overall effect of the CF3s? Could you elaborate as to how they sound now? Bobs crossover/cap work may have off set some of the bracing and damping, yet combined did this yield a cleaner overall picture in the stereo effect? Are they so tight that only music presented with volume/power gets imaged? Or is it a mellowing, say controlled presentation. I know I'm all over the place, dont let me bug ya to much. Haha, well lets start there and I'll start digging thru my dowls and scrap wood to see if I can pound some framing nails into these coffin sized speakers. J/K!.... I think if this old welder works it'll be faster! hehe. Later B-
  10. Take a look at Dennies Pics on page 9. I did similar only wrapped all of the horn throat. Dynamat might work better than what I used but its spendy. I was going to stop by a car audio shop close to my house and see if they would sell me some remenent pieces or a small chunk. If you want to experiment just wrap it up with a dense hand towel and tape it firmly on, not to tight. Try it on one horn and try to hear the differance at modest volume. Who cares if its ugly if its in the cabinet and hopefully adds sonic improvement. Hold on to the horn firmly when removing, green taped wire is red! Good luck.
  11. Hi and thanks. Yes I read your bracing post. We have to figure out this CF3 complex together. I used to be a carpenter, still have all my fingers, but now I am a chef so just take some slices off lol. Iv'e had them for 5 years. I like them, but its so hit and miss its perplexing. And been configureing them with many different gear set ups. I started the Cf 3s with 1986 Onkyo Integra P304 pre amp, EQ 35, M504 amp and even used a Marantz CD 73 Cd player. One of the first cd players for the public. Sounded very good. It was made in 1983 and was owned by the govenor of my state. But I regretfully sold it at peak market for 500. I only paid 1.75 for it at a garage sale haha. It was nice but ya know things gotta go sometimes. I sold all that for a profit. The second set up I had with the Cf3s was midline Yamaha M' seperates. Can't remember those #s. Yammy had a nice soft sound but did not have enough power. Yes of course I want Macintosh tubes but the bank would not let me remortgage! I hope we all can continue to expand this thread, I really appreciate the labor put into it from all of you. Wait a sec, she left to get the kids! Time to fire em up and "test" some more. I have read everything on the internet over the years that I could find about the Epics, Klipsch and the meaning of it all. hehe. Going to find that sweet spot that really works or die trying lol. I also have 2 sets of KG 5.5s and a pair of 3.5s that I will toy with to. I am going to wrap those horns as well. Even lifetime stereo noobs can learn lol. My x33es cd player says "Enjoy"! in digital letters, later-
  12. Hey all! My first post brings good news about my version 1 CF3's. Paid $500 from original owner barely used! So I was reading this thread last night, well have re-read this thread for a few years actually for anything tweakers can massage from thier Epic series to improve the sound, and and.... I had some 3M Coban elastic spongy type medical tape in my tool box and wrapped it form fitting all around the horns (thin) plastic, several layers of it to stiffen and dampen, tighten up unwanted resonance. Well it worked really good. It seriously was nite and day. Much the same as pushing the dolby B button and your tape deck! I did an A/B and it was sooo much smoother from left to right. Beaver Dam! I was really pleased that something so simple made a huge differance. [] Those horns always ran hot enough to fry bacon and irritate me to the point of wanting to sell them many times. Yet have kept them for the times when the sweet symphony hits all the notes. I always had them set low on treble but that killed the presance of any sound over 10k. I've had them for 5 years and lived with the pros and cons. Changing out amps and transports, cables, wires, digital to analog, even vinyl sounded harsh. This was the first time I said holy $$$$! I poured a stout at midnite and enjoyed what I was missing all this time! Its hard to tame such a forward speaker. Easily a 10 to 20% reduction of the irritating highs. I know i'm exicted but hey I'm desperate. I was able to move the highs up a click without out being annoyed. I will be doing more work to the horn adding lateral bracing and more light damping to the horn area and drivers. As for my set up now its geared towards HT, but pure stereo sounds much more controlled with music. I'm so glad I kept looking for solutions for this problem! I am using a 2001 Denon AVR 5800 flagship that is 170 x 7. (100$ Craigslist mint lol) And it hits hard. I am carefull with the CF3's tho as there are little to no parts to be had. I look all the time to stock up just in case. Bob Crites said nothing is available either. I was very close to getting tubes or a second amp to run the horns. I was also shamelessly looking for new(used) speakers. Maybe a few more cheap cabinet mods will suffice. As I really like the sound, but different sources are so revealing I constantly have to adjust the perameters to enjoy. I highly recommend anyone with Epics to pull out the horns and slap some type of deadening material around them and try it out. A 5 minute job was just was they needed Imo. Sure wish I knew about this years ago! Have fun and rock on!
