Room is not an issue. I no longer have appropriate corners,(its a long sad story) so I am going back to my first love...Altec A7-500W's (Magnificents). 16 ohm alnico. Cornwalls would be my second choice, tho.

By all means, if you have the means, go with the Klipschorns. Take the time to build the false corners and you will be rewarded. Solid corners, that the Khorns fit tightly into is a must, as well as a medium to large size room, if you want the wonderful bass that the Khorns are famous for. It (the bass) is tight, deep, and accurate. In a word, thrilling. It is not the deepest at 35 Hz, but unless you are pipe organ freak, thats low enough. Its a strong 35 Hz. I NEVER feel the need to augment the bass. I have heard Cornwalls. They sound similar to the Khorns, but they are not Khorns. Khorns are special. They just sit in their corners and smirk, as if to say "Throw it at me you audiophile *******, I'll give it right back, and if you dont like what what I'm putting out, then get some decent electonics. I can handle anything you can afford, you pretentious *****. I've been doin' this **** for 55 years. Now put some good music on and sit down and shut up. None of that rap stuff either. Not that I can't handle it. It just sucks" Mobile is right about using tube amplification.

Klipschorns don't image!! I think mine do. I have mine 11 feet apart and set into a "bay" in the front of my living room. The short wall's length exactly matches the sides of the Khorns. In other words, they just fit. Although the short walls are short, they are sturdy, and bass does not suffer. The long side walls of the room are then another 5 feet or so away from the Khorns, and the room is 25 ft deep to the rear with a cathedral ceiling running from 7' high at the khorns front wall to 10' in the center of the room. I sit about 6 or 7 feet from the plane of the speakers and hear great depth, height, width, and separation of sound. Some live rock recordings from this nearfield position give an impression of the performer's being on a stage slightly above my head. When listening to Nick Drake's 'Pink Moon', the piano solo seems to be coming straight from my left side as if I could look to my left well beyond the speakers and see a piano. When listening to some small jazz combos, it seems as if I am at a front row table in a club (such as Bill Evans Waltz for Debbie). When listening to some classical recordings, the tympani are in my front yard. Is this not imaging, or am I missing something?

Alan, I know by reading your posts, both here and at the Asylum, and reviewing your website's jazz list, that you are into the west coast stuff and have a vast collection of most of the artists on the west coast labels. I find it interesting that you make no mention of Andre Previn and his trio jazz on the Contemporary label. I have taken a great interest lately in the music of Andre Previn and his Contemporary recordings. Cant get enough. My favorites are "King Size" "Like Previn" and "My fair Lady" (I know that this is technically a Shelly Manne record, but its a Previn record to me) I also like "Duet", on Columbia. What are your thoughts on Previn? I know you must have scads of his records as well those of other artists on Contemporary that he plays on.

While reading this thread it occurs to me that there are not just two basic types of audiophiles as I had thought (right brain dominated and left brain dominated), but a third type in which the right brain and left brain have kicked the **** out of each other and have cancelled each other out. Too bad it was only a model 150, but at that price, could one really even hope for a model 200? I actually "heard" the model 200 years ago and I haven't been right since.

Crash, here is the url to Mobile's Eico site. Lots of good info there. (a tip o' the hat to the Mobester) I used Barkeepers Friend on my faceplate. If you dissolve it first before using and rub gently it works wonders and doesnt scratch the brass. Then follow up with a good polishing with Brasso. Mine came out great. Another tip: If you arent using this amp to play vinyl, then don't put any good NOS 12ax7's in the phono section where they wont be needed. Also regardless of what others might say about the Eico HF-81, I think it sounds magnificent with my Klipschorns. It might not be the bestest or the mostest of amps from that or any other era, but there is some serious magic that goes on when it is used to drive my Klipshorns in my living room. It kicked my Conrad Johnson integrated's *** to the curb. Many other Khorn/Eico users agree with this as do some Cornwall/eico users. Now I am glad to hear they work wonders with Heresys. I found a pair of '85 KCBR Klipschorns for $1500 last fall. While Khorns can sometimes be gotten for that price, the good deal was that these were in absolutely perfect condition and not even broken in. The guy had bought unfinished KCBR's new in "85 and had them finished in a light walnut and placed in the corners of his office (probably wrote them off his taxes as entertainment expense) where they sat virtually unmoved and unplayed until 2001 when I picked them up. He said he never really cared for the sound of them, but then he was using a Carver amp and they did sound kinda bright and thin when he played them for me. They have been breaking in nicely in my livingroom for several months now and they sound great.

Just got an Eico HF-81 off Ebay. I am impressed and delighted. Bone stock, it sounds better than my Conrad Johnson CAV-50. The CAV is a great amp, but with my Klipschorns it sounds too "high fi". The Eico is warm and smooth and "right" with plenty of bass and very three dimensional. Sounds great with most of my classic rock cds, wonderful with my blues albums, and swings with jazz. I am enjoying my music more than ever. I am convinced now that the Klipshorn/CJ combo is just not synergetic. They both are great components on their own and not bad together, but just not what the Klipschorn/Eico combo is. If I may slip into the vernacular, the Klipschorn and the Eico HF-81 is some synergizin' sonzabitches. Thanks to Kelly Holsten for all the Eico flag waving. ------------------ Talkin' 'bout...
