We had a huge storm a couple of weeks ago - Hail stones as big as tennis balls and very damaging This photo was taken by me just after the storm past - the calm was surreal.

Resistors are just as important as capasitors I agree with dean - don't cheat

Consider it a long overdue service, and update in a sympathetic way if you want to retain the original sound Or update with newer material capasitors it's your choice

Great Deal Crossover Upgrade by ALK
Full Range replied to joessportster's topic in Technical/Restorations
That's exactly what I did in my XOver build I use 3 different drivers from 3 different makers and all at varying sensitivity ratings It was essential to have attenuation to alter the db in each section to form a nice marriage and tune to the room I also tweaked some aspects of the design and used better quality parts than ALKs standard offerings as I am a convert by experience that better capasitors and resistors really do make a difference @Deang I just went to the ALK site ( first time in almost a year ) to see for myself and noticed that he has accused you ( not by name ) of steeling his design And just above that rant " Lo and behold " he has also taken exception to my XOver build He has not read the thread as to my reasons to build it in that way, and used an incomplete early stage unflattering photo saying that he hates the look and has given me a serve about the layout design and my choice of components ? On the build thread I respected his wishes not to post the schematic on the XOver due in part of his previous objections of people steeling his designs All I will say to this rant is WTF and ALK, get a life man. Understand that there have been XOver designers before you and there will be designers after you. All build on the previous designers ideas just like you did I will now be a gentleman and bite my tongue and take the high ground. -
I'm suitably impressed with this build Well done and happy listening

A Crossover Design on Single Exposed Board
Full Range replied to Full Range's topic in Technical/Restorations
This post are impressions from 2 persons during the measurement tests but mostly my mates impressions as my personal impressions are noted above on post # 48 Please note that we are novices at taking measurements and microphone positioning was troublesome but we gave it a go It was an interesting day for my mate and I ( we built the crossovers together but he solders better than me ) Completed over 20 sweeps, didn't record some of them as they were just, 'hey lets try this', sort of deal. We did record I think something like a dozen sweeps. some are presented below. The first sweep is Full Range's preferred attenuator settings as I walked in. And I agree, it has the best overall presentation. We upped the mid and tweeter levels just to try it, and in someways it sounded better, in others not so great, not bad, just not as good as it could be. The bass near field, well I've no idea where to measure that with his speakers. We tried various positions for the mic. Not one made any difference, so the one here is in the middle of the bass horn cabinet, 20mm from its front 'edge'. I found the comparison with the listening position interesting. Looks like a decent plot to me. But I'm learning so if anyone can shed their thoughts on it, please do, but be nice, I've got training wheels on The sweep pre and post capacitor change (not really shown), supposedly should push the mid section up another 25 hertz. But I can't see any difference at all. ~ 500hz. Some of the measurements are a bit strange, like the spike at 5khz. We suspect it might be a combination of mic position and crossover design. But I'd like to spend another day there playing with ideas and seeing where they lead. (sweep of mid on its own and tweeter on its own would prob be a good start). Maybe raising the crossover point for the tweeter (~6khz) may help to flatten it out a bit. The way the crossover is designed, the caps we changed are in series with both the mid and tweeter. The sonic difference with the change of caps though. Wow. The caps still need to break in, But its like the system can reveal 4 more layers of detail. The impact of bass has improved several fold, the ringing on instruments (when its supposed to be there) has grown beyond the confines of the walls. Theres more detail but a little harshness, I believe that harshness will disappear as the caps break in. Break in is truely over since the time we did the sweeps in May 2015 -

Firstly speaker drivers and cabinet construction Heavily modified Klipsch La Scala's Double thickness sides and back with added braces Bass bin extension - https://community.klipsch.com/index.php?/topic/108425-la-scala-bass-reflex-mod/ Drivers Crites CW1526C 15 inch cast woofers. Great Plains Audio 399 A mid compression drivers, fitted to - Elliptrac 400 timber mid range horns with adaptors to suit 1”, 1.5” & 2” horn drivers JBL 2404H “Baby Cheeks” tweeters. Component cost That may not be easy as parts were sourced at various times from various parts of the world, some were pre loved and some I already had on hand Also my purchases are in Australian dollars so the ever changing exchange rate will create havoc with correct pricing I have posted in the thread all the components used so it is still correct to the last post of changes / tweaks We did some sweeps and will add a seperate post on that with photos -
This is a start to finish thread on how I built my crossovers for my La Scalas - https://community.klipsch.com/index.php?/topic/149952-a-crossover-design-on-single-exposed-board/

A craft store I think they make topiary with them At the time my thoughts were that with the bass bin addition the sound waves needed taming Bracing would not help much as I use the Crites cast drivers and they are stiff enough The sides and back of my speakers are double thickness as well The cones are small and don't take up much space Again my thoughts were all about the sound waves and how they interact with the extra volume of the bass bin Thinking about waves mechanically I wanted to provide a nice smooth sound wave direction and transition to the lower section - no more no less It's worked for my system

You folks know that I have modified La Scalas No drivers are original Custom Crossovers Bass extension bin But the reason for my post is due to the reference of foam behind the bass driver I had experimented with this not knowing others have done it On my system foam did not work well, so I had to find an alternative Also found that large bubble cells worked better that foam After a lot of experimentation, what eventually worked best for me was a styrofoam cone adhered to the magnet of the driver ( see photo )

A couple on moon photos at early dusk I actually saw that aeroplane first and ran to get the camera, had no time so quickly snapped a photo on auto setting. To see it you need to expand photo #1

Thanks for the tip and link Zobsky I will look into it

Thread Drift: Hey DJK, did you put a bunch of hyperlinks in your posts? Most seem to point at ebay listings. I've never seen that before on posts within the Klipsch forums. The word "open garage door" had a link to a completed ebay listing, but the link did not follow my quote from djk. (see post 11 for hyperlink reference of "open garage door") I just hope something weird is not infecting the forums. I see nothing However it sounds like malware infecting your browser with key word recognition

In the near future I will devise a sliding port length system I want to see how different port lengths can change the bass signature Because all the drivers used are not Klipsch. Then a little experimentation is what's needed

The La Scala bass bins were custom built to the Klipsch blueprints so if Klipsch state 58 lt in the dog box then that's what it is
