Gentlemen It's a Vinyl Spinning thread because not all music is available in other formats Not only do we like to see the record spinning around it's also normal to sit and listen to the record from start to finish without the constant - stop, start, change track with the remote control ( you all know what I mean ) Anyway next spinning session I have stuck with King Crimson For @Tarheel a special photo Artist - King Crimson Album - In The Court Of The Crimson King

As an engineer I like to get my hands working I built the plinth and referbished the Garrard and fitted the tone arm The air pump has also been modified and is very quiet but I will place it into a sound insulated box Just for you On the next post, so keep watching

Hi all I have been tweaking again so an update is in order It takes a lot listening time to get it just right and I believe that this is Nirvana for me I have made some slight changes and ultra fine tuning the crossover points and have installed some Jantzen Audio Alumen Z-Cap to the tweeter section As it stands Based on what crossover info was originally presented and built Original xover was specc'd @ ~500 / 6,000 Based on the 8.5% change in cap value from 7.5uF to 8.2uF in the tweeter section The crossover point should now be approximately ~500 / 5,600 " Please Note that my mods are based on the drivers used in my system " Crites CW1526C 15 inch cast woofers. Great Plains Audio 399 A mid compression drivers, fitted to -Elliptrac 400 timber mid range horns JBL 2404H “Baby Cheeks” tweeters. " So if your drivers fall into similar specs - I'm sure that your listening experience will be enhanced if you choose to go down this path " Listening impressions - after installing the Jantzen Alumen Z-Cap Differences are slight but also a slightly different flavour Overall - slightly more presence, more live realness However with extended listening of my custom track list, I can tell that those subtle differences after the latest changes make my listening experience more pleasurable Two differences of note are When one hears a finger squeak on a guitar string " live " one normally gets a tinkle in ones solar plexus, my system now reproduces that feeling On complex flute compositions as in one of my test tracks where flute is mixed with precise heavy bass normally in high volume listening - the flute will reverberate inside the ear canal but now it's tamed and very pleasant Try listening to this track as a test ' Third Ear Audio - Ethereality ' and compare Rock is punchy and not stressed Male and female voices have clear clarity and presence Definition in the high register is flawless Bass is unaffected and still punches hard and fast as before I will leave you all with the final schematic should you choose to follow in my footsteps And some of the most recent photos of the modification changes The grey capacitors in the photos are the Jantzen Audio Alumen Z-Cap Listening tests conducted through these components Amp - First Watt M2 Pre Amp - Nakamichi CA5 II Source - Cyrus CD8 SE CD player with PSX Speakers - Klipsch La Scala - Highly Modified Cheers Full Range -
Heard its bird call - No talking though This is a wild parrot and is called a Rosella. Although I live in the city my suburb is very very leafy and close to the river We get a lot of wildlife here

A nature shot of an Australian Native Parrot This bird landed in a nearby tree and I took a photo from about 30 feet

Full Range replied to jimjimbo's topic in Technical/Restorations
Not a Bobs Crites design but yes I have changed Sonicaps to Jantzen Superior Z caps on my 3 way crossovers A lot more control and better all around presentation -

If the timber is still drawing in moisture then a thinned out waterproof PVA glue would do the trick to seal the end grain

I see that you like King Crimson Any amp that uses EL 34 tubes for melow + detail or KT 66 / KT 88 tubes for Rock thump and detail I use and recommend this King Crimson Track as a test Bolero Remix

The main transistors are mounted onto the heat sink and then we added a finned hold down washer And for the power supply diode boards we made some alloy heatsinks, they also bolt down better on the base-plate

WARNING - Phonographic amp content Amp is now complete and burning in Time of birth 10 am 5-7-2016. Actually It was fired up last night about 10pm, but first up was a slow variac rise for testing (no smoke ) But it was necessary to swap out one resistor on both boards to 'center' the dc offset. Once that was done it was time to let it stabilize, offset is now under 3mv. Both channels are so close you'd think they were matched. So far the massive heatsinks are doing their job very nicely. Just over luke warm so far. Some Phonographic photos for you all And No, I won't have any impressions of what it sounds like. It's fresh and needs some serious break in.

Will keep the forum updated as the changes happen But the system is sublime as it is now Any other changes are just pepper and salt to taste -
For the extra $40 / $50 or so dollars to get the fully drilled and tapped chassis - it's worth every cent and that = equals money well spent
-
OK a quick build update The toroidal transformer that was ordered from Germany just landed, and the build has restarted My amp builder said that it's very well built Also a quick look of the amp power supply mock-up
-
You can do it Dean

Some months ago a decision was made to have Jantzen make me flat foil WAX inductors Money was saved and the order was placed The change over was for the main inductors One for the bass - 8AWG L 2.70 mH Rdc 0,14ohm One that jointly handles midrange and treble - 12 AWG L 2.4 mH Rdc 0,31 ohm Take Note - that the set of 4 coil units weigh over 30 pounds - that's a workout and a half Hook up wire is silver plated OFC copper and silver solder was used The 2.7 mH inductor is large - the size of a coffee cup saucer @ approx 10 pounds each And the finished job The only thing left was to sit down and have a listen Listening impressions observed we subtle but in a positive way Most noticeable in some key areas were - 1) Seamless crossover points 2) Better midrange voice definition and control - but still keeping its sharpness and prat 3) Bass became or seemed deeper to my ears, but also retained its layered effect but most noticed was that these layers were smoothed out making the music meaty in the bass In saying that I feel that when the First Watt M2 amplifier is installed and connected to the system in a couple of weeks it will be a different kettle of fish ** Will update again with listening impressions using the M2 ** I have one more modification in the works but I'm just waiting for the production of specific values to be made and then move forward with it at some point in the future
