  1. for the posts saying la scallas with a sub outperform the k-horns.... what about k-horns with the same sub??

    Replacement fuse

never seen a 3.15 fuse. im sure 3a would be close enough or maybe 3.5. check parts express, or i found a good selection of fast blow fuses at home stores like home depot or lowes etc. are you reading the actual fuse rating or what thee amp board says? cant imagine klipsch would use such an odd rated fuse.
  3. congrats on the speakers, i just got a new to me pair of k-horns too. mine are 1995 vintake in oil walnut. very happy overall with them, but youre not alone noticeing the "different" bass they have. its not like the direct radiating & can even make some think they lack bass or cause you to hear the mids overwhelm everything. with your x-overs i think dropping the mid a few db's will help a lot. mine have ak-3 xovers & from what ive read are not as easy to drop the mid section. what helped with mine was having a pre amp that boosted the bass in only the lower freq, 20-100hz, woke them up alot. as for how & where to seal them, here a link to me asking that when i got mine home, great pic of where to add the pipe foam... on the upper horizontal board, i chose not to use pipe foam as it stuck out too far & didnt allow the vertical tail board edges to touch the wall, so i used some softer 1/2" thick foam strip with the stick backing, works perfect & did help the bass tighten up a bit. good luck & enjoy! https://community.klipsch.com/index.php?/topic/148027-help-with-new-to-me-k-horns/
  4. no i havent tried pulling them out, everyone insisted they had to be as tight in the corners as possible & sealed with pipe foam. which i did & it did improve the bass, which i like as much basss as possible. so pulling them out may not be thebest idea for my small room. as you said, too close may exagerate the unpleasantness i get at high volumes. dont get me wrong at low to nid volumes the k-horns are very nice, no problems, but i like it LOUD. so with the small room i think i will look into some sound absorbtion panels like was recently suggested. the x-overs are stock ak-3's, mid horn is the 401. the speakers are just approaching 20 years old so i dont think there is anything wrong with them. my fortes are 1989 or 90 series & sound excellent, so im not fullly convinced on the whole 20 years & caps need replaced thing. i just keep the volume levels in check for the small room & will wait for a bigger room with vaulted ceilings etc.
  5. How high is your ceiling, if I might ask? Do you have the Khorns along the short wall or the long wall? Anything on the floor or ceiling? How about on top of the Khorns? Sometimes a picture is worth thousands of words. If you haven't seen this before, perhaps some of this might be of some use to you in your audio journeys: Corner Horn Imaging FAQ Chris ceiling is on the low side, just under 8ft because of the acoustic panel drop style it is. well aware this is far from "ideal". mine are on the short wall for now & will stay there due to the layout of the room & the fact that i have a 2nd home theater system down there too. floor is fully carpeted with area rugs on top of that, fully furnished with couch & chairs. nothing on the top of the k-horns. the k-horns were a spur of the moment decision on a local deal i couldnt pass up. they will follow me to my next house & hopefully be in a better room. just to clarify again, my comments arent really about "my" speakers, im refering to what many other people say about theirs, plenty of people feel the mids & highs can have "issues" this wasnt sour grapes or anything along those lines for my personal speakers. harshness aside, i love my k-horns & would be happy to let anyone hear them that likes the same music i listen to, mainly rock & roll, i promise they will leave feeling as if they just saw the band at full live volumes. its all good as far as im concerned. but i wouldnt compare my k-horns to a bookshelf speaker of any price. just not a valid comparison. thanks for the link you provided, very much appreciated & good info there. my audiojjourney is & probably will always be a work in progress. thats part of the fun!
  6. & that observation is just as flawed... saying you cant compare a car to a truck is because they are apples to oranges, however speakers for music in a home can be apples to oranges too in the sense that a 10" woofer bookshelf speaker is in no way "comparable" to a 15" folded horn speaker... regardless of price. they are totally different animals. which again, is all i was pointing out. & the analogy to the high $$ porsche to a muscle car was along the same lines, they are both cars, sold to give people driving enjoyment, however one has a completely different purpose than the other. & yes many porshces or other exotic makes of car is or can be 250k, i didnt mean a 70-100k run of the mill porsche, i meant a high$$ 911 turbo or carrera etc. & the "muscle cars" i was comparing it to are most commonly in the 20k range. im talking about 60's & 70's true muscle cars that people build for 1/4 mile track use. they usually run in the low 11 second to high 10 sec et range, all faster than most exotic foreign cars (your choice of make & model) that are not as fast on a drag strip but are "better" in all other scenarios like top speed, handling, braking, styling etc etc. hence, apples to oranges. so to end any disagreements some seem to have with my comments, i like my k-horns very much as well as all the other klipsch i have owned, not sure where the "maybe full horns arent for you" came from, just reiterating the numerous comments i have read on here & elsewhere about the areas that are lacking in the k-horn & la scallas. some love their k-horns in stock form, some spend lots of money to upgrade things that, well, need to be upgraded. & to point out that everyone hears different & likes different things when i stressed that myself is kind of redundant. to each their own will always apply to any subject of comparison there is. there are other attributes to the high $$ speakers out there & reasons why they cost so much more is all i was saying. didnt mean to offend or hijack the thread... back to topic.
  7. not at all, youre welcome to say anything you want. the last phrase was just that, a phrase or saying people use to mean take no offense from my statements, it was jus an opinion or thoughts on the matter & worth about 2 cents. same as what most other peoples opinions are worth. please touch on all the points you would like with your opinion. thats what forums are for, to exchange ideas & have debates. to address a few things said in reply to my post: i'm not making any assumptions about your personal system, simply said that comparing small 10" woofer speakers to a 15" folded horn behemoth of a speaker isnt apples to apples. the la scalla is an orange in that scenario. yes its louder & has more bass & is favored by many people, especially klipsch fans & owners. each person has different tastes in music & speakers. the crossovers in klipsch speakers are known to be on the cheaper side, thats why even when new, the caps were upgraded to high dollar ones like solen etc. the mid horn doesnt age, so it is what it is & many people hate them & replace the 400 or 401 with $500 wood horns & other drivers etc etc. my point was many people think as new they have "issues" & need to be upgraded for this or that reason. sure mdf probably resonates less than real wood, didnt question that that, point was real wood costs probably 5-10 times more than mdf, especially some of the exotic woods these high $$ speakers can have. all things that make them cost more, although probably nowhere near what they cost to build, i agree that they are probably grossly marked up. my k-horns sound very good too, & everyone that hears them likes them as well... i like them, i like most all klipsch speakers... thats why have owned almost 10 different ones over the years & have 3 pairs now. the comparison just seems a little uneven is all i was pointing out. thats why i said i know some will disagree with my comments... thats fine. not trying to razzle any feathers. & i am not disapointed in the k-horns either, no sour grapes. i understand my room may be a little small etc & they need absolutely perfect recordings. i also know the difference between very bad or compressed recordings, the point was there are many in betweens of recordings that should sound fine like they do on many other speakers... klipsch included. i can play the worst of cd's on the fortes or epics & they sound acceptable, or WAY better than the k horn. the k-horns are completely different & seem to have issues the forte or epic or other brand speakers dont. the comment i make about the k-horns is that up at louder levels they can sound harsh compared to others that simply do not. if the mid horns on the k-horn & la scalla was so good there wouldnt be so many replacement horns, from factory fitting wood upgrades to the crazy huge things i see & read about on here. i said upfront i am very happy with them, but many can critique the heck out of them, for everything they do good they do almost as much less than good. just as many professional reviews that back that up as there are good reviews. wasnt knocking anyones personal system or saying i like to spend $20 grand for little bookshelf speakers, i like my klipsch & plan to keep them for a long time but i also appreciate an expensive pair of some brand i have never heard of or can barely pronounce right. gear is as follows, still a work in progress but all decent quality s/s stuff. the rotel has been reviewed better than some amps 2 & 3 times its cost. adcom gtp-500ii preamp adcom gfa-555ii amp adcom gcd-600 cd-player decent cables & wires k-horns sealed correctly in concrete backed drywalled basement 13x23 room. also have rotell rb-990 amp & onkyo m-504 amp. they arent tube stuff or super high dollar but sound very good for mid-fi.
  8. This argument makes no sense to me - poor recordings sound bad. To suggest that the loudspeakers as the one element in the reproduction chain should "correct bad recordings" is odd. Perhaps what you need is a really good mixing console. Good loudspeakers reveal poor recordings even more than poor loudspeakers do. duely noted. however to say poor recordings sound bad is kind of one sided. my point is that "most" recordings are decent & sound decent on other speakers, why do only PERFECT recordings sound good on k-horns? & even then, some very good recordings sound "bad." i have probably 200+ cd's. most all of them have sounded pretty decent for the most part on my mid level klipsch (forte, epic, kg etc) & other brands. but some sound almost unlistenable on the k-horns. they sound fine on epics which have close to the same efficiency rating. so to make a blanket statement that "k-horns are efficient" as the sole reason for the issues i mention doesnt excuse it away. numerous people will admit/acknowledge that the mid horns & even the tweeters are inferior in the upper end heritage speakers. terms like harsh. edgey, not time aligned, etc etc are constantly used. otherwise there wouldnt be fastrac, ALK & crites etc etc. again, just my .02 about comparing other "high $$$" speakers to klipsch. take it for what its worth... .02.
  9. no offense intended to the OP or klipsch in general, as i am a long time klipsch owner & fan & personally prefer most of their speakers. BUT my first observation to the comparison of what the OP heard & his la scalas is: of course the bass wasnt as good as la scallas, its a 10" woofer in a sealed or bass reflex cabinet vs a 15" woofer in a folded horn. that should be obvious. myself & other klipsch owners, just like any owner of another brand speaker or make of car etc, are somewhat biased, you are used to the sound you hear from the horns & are comparing your used prices with new "high end" stuff. so yes, dollar for dollar you like your speakers better. however, i bet the high $$ speakers you heard had much more accurate mid bass & the highs were very smooth etc etc. they dont require hundreds or thousands of dollars of upgrades & mods like so many klipsch speakers can & do. plus the cabinets were probably real solid wood, not mdf with a micro thin veneer. the crossovers are most likely made with the high dollar components, not the cheapest available & needing upgrades to better quality. all things to consider that make the higher $$ speakers cost more & arguably sound better/different. agian, i am a very happy owner of numerous klipsch speakers, however i can & do appreciate the other brands that are out there. i understand why some things cost more than others. main example, i just bought some k-horns, thought for sure they would be the holy grail of speakers & i would be 100% pleased with them... welll sorry to say, i am not. they no doubt have their strong points but can have a very harsh midrange & tweeter. its no secret, in fact many people/companies make a living selling things to fix or address this very common issue. how are $9,000 speaker so inadequite in these areas? i've heard the adages that they are so revealing that unless your recording is perfect they sound like crap or the room or the gear etc etc... well, why is it that other brands can sound so good with less than perfect recordings & rooms etc? seems to me that should be an attribute of speakers if they can still sound excellent on poor recordings or less than perfect gear. if i pay thousands of dollars for a "flagship" speaker but need to spend thousands more in mods & upgrades or buy ridiculous priced tube amps, then how good are they really? i know some will take that the wrong way, just pointing out how i see it & that you need to compare apples to apples when you try to discount other makes of things. of course a $250,000 porsche can be smoked in the quarter mile by a 20,000 muscle car, but dont forget about the handling, braking, styleing & technology that goes into that porsche, not to mention the lifestyle it represents for the limited few that can afford it. its all relative.
  10. I'd be curious to know exactly what is wrong with her hands. nothing wrong per say, just a sarcastic comical "joke" goes back to a 90's episode of seinfeld. some may not see the humor in it i suppose https://community.klipsch.com/index.php?/topic/141709-bullsht-t-shirt/?p=1701629
  11. "Your mileage may vary" - a euphemism used to indicate that others can and will disagree based on their particular experiences at home in their particular abodes. ah, gotcha. i understand the euphemism & have heard it many times... the abbbreviation however is new to me & im sure many others that are not hip to the current jargon the kids use these days. & most would consider me a "kid" & i have been using the internet since the mid 90's & quite familiar with texting lingo & social media stuff... but all the recent abbreviations can get a little ridiculous when the majority of people have no idea what they mean. to use them & assume people know them can make reading some posts difficult to say the least. ykwim?
  12. what does YMMV mean? i love how people use all these abbreviations today, the majority of people have no clue what they mean.
  13. "man hands" thats hilarious. & if you look from the elbows down (& ignore the shorts) it definantly looks like a dude! & yes, that seller is a scammer... like anyone in their right mind would pay $500 for a 20 year old t-shirt. couple hundred maybe, if you were a huge klipsch collector or something. but aside from that hes obviously smokin something. look at his other items for sale... some shirts he has listed for over $1000! WTF?
  14. i have heard the la scalas & while they do sound "good" i felt everything that some k-horn owners mention about "harsh" or "edgy" mids is exagerated in the la scallas because ther low end just isnt there, you have to turn up the volume so much to get decent bass output that the mids just get too exagerated. keep in mind that is for louder than "average" listening, at normmal low to mid volumes its probably not as bad. i have also heard many k-horns & as of recently own a set myself, at first i complained about the harshness in the mids too, but have since learned to drop the extreme volume levels a bit & to attenuate the bass somewhat to compensate, afterall, to me, the main thing i like in my music is the impact of the lower end, so to get that at higher volume levels i need to turn up the bass a bit. my adcom pre-amp makes that easier than most since their bass knob only affects the very low 20hz region & the loudness button cuts off at 100hz of boost. unlike most other companies that are well into the mid bass for tone controls. so, my suggestion is a k-horn hands down. the la scallas just didnt do it for me... i'm sure with an added sub they would be ok but they just cant compare to the lower end of the k-horns that are sealed in proper corners. also the prices of the new speakers a couple grand difference between the 2, but unless you have more $$$ than you know what to do with, i suggest looking on the used market, k-horns can be had for $2000-$2500 all the time if you are patient, sometimes less & often a bit more, depending on condition etc. save the hassle of adding a sub to la scallas & search for some nice k-horns. check ebay, CL & even on the forum here, i know there is one member considering selling a pair of k-horns right now. good luck on your search.
  15. & if you wanted to save a ton of money over a new sub, look for a velodyne fsr series sub. they pop up quite often on ebay or CL for around $500 or less. hard to beat a fsr-15 for that price & IMO it will compete with many new/current subs for twice the price. these were $1000-$1500 when new & are servo controlled subs. shoot get 2 of them for ~$1000 & you will never look back!
  16. glad to hear you found/fixed your issue. what was the "bit of fuzz" you found? was it a foreign object or something that may have come loose from the housing like a shard of plastic etc?
  17. glad to hear it was an outside object causing the problem. like i said, you would be hard pressed to blow a tweeter unless you feed the speakers lots of dirty power at crazy high volume levels. but for ~$50 a pair the titanium tweeters are supposed to be an improvement, but if you are happy with their sound as is, save your money.
  18. i agree weather changes, & goes in cycles etc, & there are 100 year floods. this winter has been pretty bad though, never heard "polar vortex" used so much untill this year. my driveway has heaved & cracked that it has never done in 10+ years. people in some towns have lost water due to major pipe freezes. although i also remember riding my motorcycle in december in 98 or 99, i usually drive my firebirds untill it snows, into mid december the last 3-4 years. for the woofers or the mid tweets?
  19. Mine have been in 4 rooms, always pressed into a corner seal. They did, in fact, sound highly similar in all those environments, but the big room with the high ceiling and big carpet does sound a bit better. The odd thing is that I am often not completely satisfied when playing CDs through them, but virtually all modern movies through the Khorns with a Belle Klipsch center sound great! Yes, with movies, I also use a sub, but the mid and highs in movies sound better than those in many CDs. The CDs do sound good, but not as good. Do the movie people just take more time and spend more money in making their recordings, or what? probably due to compression of cd's vs uncompressed dvd's or especially blu-rays. & the whole bit rate thing. most modern movies do ghet much better production values than cd's & being on dvd format the music track doesnt have to be as compressed as most cd's. try SACD or DVD-audio & you will notice the same differences.
  20. i plan to use them, & am sure there is little to no audible difference with the fuses. klipsch used them for a reason on the ak-2 & 3 x-overs. probably because of the increased low freq in music during the late 80's & 90's... you know... c-RAP!
  21. party on wayne! yes the cdplayer & rack is located very close to the side of one speaker due to room limitations & its basically a temporary set up right now. the k-horns were a spur of the moment impulse purchase & i broke out my stored seperates to hook up to them. so for now the player is too close for comfort, but never had a problem untill this happened. it was paul simons "diamonds on the soles of her shoes" off graceland cd. the cd is on its last leg being almost 15 years old & lived in my car for a few years.
  22. what are "degree days?" i agree 12 & 13 were pretty mild winters, but i have lived here for over 30 years & dont recall it being this cold, maybe in the late 80's when i was a youngster & didnt mind so much. but we have broke multiple records for low temps, seriously, -15 at the end of february is ridiculous!
  23. i plan to do exactly that. on a side note, i do recall the cd player skipped when a strong bass beat hit & thats when the fuse blew. wonder if that contributed to the fuse blowing?? will get some 2.5 fuses in a day or 2... its 2* for a high temp today with -20 wind chills, & -15 actual temps at night. my jeep is nice & warm in the garage & so am i in my house. not going anywhere for a couple days! hate this winter crap, its almost march & its like antartica! supposed to be almost 40* by this time in iowa!
  24. the kv-4 has always got excellent ratings from what i have read & is supposed to be a great match to the older klipsch heritage, kg & klf series. never heard a c-7 but the kv-4 is a nice sounding center, almost bougt one back in the 90's but went with a kv-3 due to the cost. heard its better than the acedemy, & pretty hard to come by.
  25. tweeters "usually" work or they dont, when they blow they just stop working. sounds like it might be a capacitor issue in the x-over. caps are "supposed" to start going bad after ~20 years. i owned the kg5.5's for over 15 years & the tweeters never gave out, & i listen louder than most. as for contact info, check out bob crites website or he may chime in here for you. he offers an upgraded titanium tweeter diaphrams for about $50/pair, supposed to be a nice improvement in sound. he also can hook you up with a x-over rebuild kit for them. or just look at the value (numbers printed on the cap) & buy replacement caps from a place like parts express, they are very cheap for equal quality as whats in there. ot too hard to replace, if you can solder you can replace them. i loved my kg 5.5's & think they are one of the most under rated klipsch speakers out there.
