  1. Vintage audio offers something for everyone. It's an affordable entry point for those new to the audio hobby. It's ideal for second systems or modest living spaces. Best of all, it gives us gray-haired hi-fi veterans a respite from the spiraling expenses of new gear, and it can offer the intrepid audio explorer sonic performance that I feel can be comparable to that offered by modern gear. The era of vintage audio, roughly 1965 through 1970, comprised the gilded age of hi-fi and the ripe years of RCA Living Stereo and Mercury Living Presence records. This era of audio embodies the work of such names as Saul Marantz, Hermon Hosmer Scott, Rudy Bozak, James B. Lansing, Paul Klipsch, David Hafler, and Henry Kloss—dead guys with ears. These guys used the absolute best minds available to design and engineer sonic marvels that have stood the test of time as icons in a world now dominated by home theater.

  11. First buy a good tube amp, the bigger the better, there fixed that for you, and your ears will be happy. Next power this amp with a solar array, the bigger the better, there fixed that for you, now your wallet will be happy. and 'NO' A/C, Zero, Nada. Sorry, this just looked like fun, 12 channels you say? are you trying to cut power cost or what ? Yes I am trying to cut power consumption... Our Denon 4520 draws 1 amp just turning it on. Now granted with the Klipsch it doesn't go up from there but I believe a AVP with a minimal power 12 channel amp would cut it down maybe in half or more. Parts express sells a lot of this type, I see them in their flyers all the time, might be worth a look see.
  12. parts express.com has some good replacement stuff, kinda sounds like your ready for an entire new upgrade.

  14. I been shopping Ebay on and off all day, watching three at the moment. This just happened to bring back a lot of memorys of my dad dropping me off at thrifty drug on Saturday with a bag full of tubes, he would come back a hour later and id have checked and rechecked 20 tubes ! his for TV and mine for radio(s).
  15. In the search bar of Ebay punch in: 'class a tube' very educational, iv purchased two from a guy called "Primamp" out of hongkong, yes they are imported, but remember these Chinese are smart cookies, they have taken Fisher, Marantz, Macintosh, and others and reproduced them. I have bought them and will continue to buy them. I will stand these amps up to anything anyone has American made or otherwise. From my dealing with this guy in hongkong, it seems there is a boatload of class a freaks over there also, so the equipment needs to be top notch, because you know over there they shoot each other when pizzed off........just my two cents. P.S. the Ebay deals are indeed killer, but its the dam shipping that's the pisser.
  16. That's enough incentive to stay married... Yes, and with my new rule, the proper amount to spend on speakers is $100 times the years married. Next year I will be celebrating my 31st, and I expect a $3,100 set of speakers. You just had to start this dam thread! Wife came in a saw this, oh that is so sweet you guy's talk about our anniversaries, um, yeah babe that's what we do!, as I minimize Ebay auction for a tube tester!....close call.
  17. Now im looking for one, I loaned mine to a bud in a ham radio shop that caught fire last week, and he called today, affirming the death of my old school tube tester. He was asking me replacement cost for his insurance, so ill be shopping on Ebay here in a few min. Dam, that was a good old tester too.......
  18. An error occurred You have reached your quota of positive votes for the day,....... dam, dam dam, just when I was having fun........
  19. Claude if that is his name, scored! Great looking Original Klipsch, at a dam fine price too!
  20. recapped AL-3's. I bet I have the polarity reversed on one of the woofers. I replaced them in the spring of last year and probably got careless. There is plenty of bass extension (for LaScalas). The problem arose when I had them contiguous and in 2 channel mono. Also, it only happened to frequencies from the bass bin. Either speaker alone had great extension. Together and balanced, the bass tanked by something like -12db (guess) up to about 250hz (also guess). Reversed cap? we have all done this, some when I was a kid were packaged reversed, that was a learning experience.
  21. Ill take it for granted you recapped and rewired everything correctly, so this is my idea. I suspect when you added the ground, something does not like it. remove ground and fire it up.
  22. I hear just fine, or I would not be into Class 'A' tubes and Klipsch speakers. I like the test from youtube, and there sure is a lot of them.
  23. First find a local buddy that runs tubes, see if he will help set you up with something he may have for a test on your system.
  24. I have ALL shipments come to my office/plant, because iv always worried about exactly the same thing. good luck with your conversion.
  25. Her Fav dinner place is always good, iv got the same thing coming Monday.
