Help with Speaker Grill frame material, please!
ricktate replied to Kevmosmith's topic in Technical/Restorations
The LaScalas can be ordered from Klipsch with black grill and logo but you have to make the outside frame out of Baseshoe moulding i made mine out of oak baseshoe moulding turned out great.Dont use 1/4 round it doese not work right. If you order them from Klipsch they come with velcro to stick right on to,,,cool huh,,Rick -
I put a strip of that sound damping stuff from parts express on each inside board of mine but i forgot to put it on the woofer door..lol...woofer door was being painted and i forgot it.But hey cant hurt huh...Rick

Those look sweet....I did think of an idea when i saw them,,,you could pull the mid and tweet horn out and put fabric over the mouth of the horn then re-install and try different colors of cloth maybe in contrast of the black would make them look cool...just a idea. But if you decide to go with stock grills you can make the trim using baseshoe moulding and order the grills from Klipsch they come with backer board and emblems ready to put on. Rick

Cornwalls: Any pics of innards out there?
ricktate replied to dgheck's topic in Technical/Restorations
You should take the backs off and loosen and retighten the crossover conections. They corrode after so many years and a bonus to is that you can look around the inside to,,,lol.Rick The backs of 84s may not come off they changed designs around that time -

Those would be 84 walnut lacquer.....Rick -
While on the outset it does seem like Grippers would isolate,,,,its not the case,,,,they actually grip the floor in fact they hook it up to the floor....i did it to my Scalas and although i didnt A-B them to confirm it ,,,i think it does help. While spikes could do same thing but isnt better to make sure the speaker is hooked to the floor without transferring the vibration to the floor?Rick

In partsexpress i used the car spades #095-663 they fit perfect and you can use 12GA wire. Also i got stainless steel allen head bolts and copper washers from westlake hardware instead of using those wimpy screws.Rick

Do you have the rubber gasket for the tailboard for the corner? If not some have used foam pipe insulation it does need to be sealed to the corner and also the top plate of bass bin should be sealed as well.Do look around here alot of information in the forum. Rick

Tightbond also makes a water based contact cement i used it and loved it,,,,Greg said the wood glue and iron method didnt work to well i think...maybe he will post about it again here. Rick

Jennifer,Glad to see your asking alot of Questions good to learn as much as possible. I run my LaScalas with old HK430 with 24 watts per side so not all of us are power hungry junkies..lol.Read as much as you can here and learn as you go thats how we all have done it just most of us started at the age of 12... lol. Just sand and fill the scratches with that minwax wood filler works great Greg recomended it to me....then make sure the surface is super smooth....hardest part is getting surface ready and trimming the veneer. Rick
-
Not to sure about that file idea,,,,will flake off veneer i think...cut down to 1/8 inch and then sand real slow works best for me. Rick ps, also think wood backed veneer works best for me from woodworkers supply..also on the contact cement put it on thin not thick it will make lumps...but if you do get lumps and bubbles just use clothes iron and heat the area up seems to take lumps and bubbles out...would help to practice on piece of wood first

I think parts express has speaker cable in 12GA for inside walls.I would use atleast 12GA. Rick

Some recievers and preamps have a low filter button if you do just turn it on,,,,i think its the arm of the TT moving up and down causing your problem. You need to level the TT and then set the cartridge force around 1 to 1 1/2 grams depending on your arm and cartridge.Do you have a Shure cartrige balance?,,,Rick Tate -
33 is my number,,,,Rick
