Maybe he did not realize it was a bad recording. It could just be a song he likes, and that it emphasizes something he can hear, but others can not, in certain speaker designs.

(Am I allowed to be apologetic for both sides of a conversation?)

I don't think Kink is the same as OD. He had the misfortune to come in on a thread like this one and got jumped on. He could have gone anywhere else and probably would have been OK.

The background, or underground rumble on that recording caused the original recording to distort. Then when it is played back, the sub-sonic rumble forces the woofers to overwork, even if you can not hear it, causing intermodulation distortion which compounds the problem by creating another abnormal level of distortion. This may be worse than the above described condition, which I presume would be a clean recording.

I have noticed this on some of the music these editing geniuses work on and I can't play them at any volume at all without severe sound problems. I don't have a good way to describe it other than it sounds like death to speakers if you persist. I can't imagine what speakers these guys use to think they have done a good job.

  3. I am finding gaps in my list of speakers and wonder if anyone out there has a complete list of speakers made by Klipsch from the late 80's to  the early 2000's and perhaps on. I am trying to figure out what all takes tweeters the same size as the ones in the Chorus and Forte and KP-250. Both pro and classic are of interest to me. It does not matter if they are exponential or tractix or whatever it is the size I am interested in.

After owning them I can say for sure the cabs will vibrate at higher volumes, however putting a coin standing up on the cab did not cause it to mvoe or fall, but you can feel vibrations transmitted.   Nonetheless, I heard no audible degradation as a result IMO using solid state and or digital amps with high damping factor.   However, compared to heresy IIIs, the bass was a little slower and sloppier, yet had an extreme amount more impact and extension (to be expected of course).  I hate sloppy, boomy bass and the Cornwall IIIs didn't have it in my room. LA scala IIs I can't comment on since I haven't heard a pair but would certainly like to.

Funny how rooms can effect things. I bought a set of AL crossover La Scalas and went to pick them up. The guy had them in a room with a bunch of other gear and the bass was remarkable and they sounded really nice. I get them to my shop and it is like where did the bass go.

another audiophile myth.  I've heard numerous unbraced speakers that did not exhibit audible resonances.  ..Including my current CWIII's

Good Morning OD great to see you here today. I admire your luck and ability to always have the best of everything and the shiniest knobs. You even get a Cornwall that does not resonate! It is not fair because the five sets I have had all did do this.

I think the roof rack idea might see a greater power direct a bolt of lightning in my direction , so current plans are to see if gpa would send me a recone kit so i can have the job done here.

He might already be doing that with your woofers sad plight anyway. My experience with reconing in Nashville has been pretty sad and I hope yours will be better.

You're probably not missing much avoiding f.b , it allows silly points of view to gather momentum at a scary pace ( like ' you're a transphobic cissexist if you DON'T prefer sex with women who have penises '.... Wait, what ?!? )

England is in the midst of a PC overthrow of what made them great. Your own people like the childless May who do not care about the future are selling you down the river and I don't understand the passive attitude which is allowing all this to happen. I read that Churchill is being censored now because of the truth he spoke about the Arabs being imported into England in wholesale lots. I fear for your country and see no peaceful way out as rational people have sat on their hands too long and now they must fight or lose England and they were silly enough to give up their guns so they are in heap big trouble.

On the +ve . Bill from great plains says he can recone for $145.00
Not sure if this is a new price across the board for 604's or because mine is an iconic 704-8a but I'm happy enough with that.
Probably get both done so they're equally fresh in that case.

It's the best deal going. I don't hunt for used Altec woofers any more I just get my problem children reconed. You give him the specific information I am certain you will get a quote for that.

Thanks for the replies people. Wow thats a bunch cheaper than id imagined. Even factoring in insured shipping from the u.k it may be worth my while.

It surprised me too. I have some Altec A-7's here to restore and when it is time for woofer reconing they go to Great Plains. I think they also check Alnico magnets and restore their characteristics if needed.

I'll add that I did download the Emiliana Torrini Song (Birds) you mentioned and while I did hear the rumbling (which I believe Torrini intended) I did not hear the resonance.  I played it three times at increasing volumes and couldn't hear a resonance.  Either the Cornwall IIIs don't have this issue, or I'm blessed by exquisite amp/speaker synergy: meaning my McIntosh Integrated exhibits a -7db 150hz drop-off to offset my speakers 150hz +7dB hump.

    Here ya go Tizman 🤣

=== I own both and yes it is Jubes over LS1. However there is just something so “right” when I pull the LS back in. Right enough that I could easily own just those. I would very much like a pair of LS2 —

I have to admit that songs like Crumbling Down by Mellancamp or Green Grass and High Tides by the Outlaws will chest thump you better on La Scalas than anything else I have owned but the tonal quality is lacking and so is the bass for me. Migrated to Pro gear and wont be back.

  12. 1 minute ago, kink56 said:

Yes the two way Jubes are on my radar as well. Finding where to hear them would even be more rare than LS II I would think.

I have very satisfactory subwoofers, so I am not concerned about bass extension.  But that 120-150hz  hump is a deal breaker!  I have been bored and unmoved by speakers before, but never offended as I was with the Belles before.

I heard a set of the new La Scalas and Jubes with the 402's and it would be those Jubes any day for me over the La Scalas. Better sound and I think cheaper too.

Having owned LaScalas since 1979 (bought them new) and having heard the LaScala II, my opinion is, the II's "sound" like they have a full (additional) octave of bass.  When I asked about it to some of their engineers, he (Jim Hunter) admitted to me that the same output is there in the original LaScala, it's just masked by all the vibrations of the sidewalls.....if you could tame those, you'd hear that lower sound that the II's have.

Those LSI's I had with the fiberglass on them made me pause just a bit before I sold them and kept the KP-450's. They were heavier on the side walls and it does make a big difference.

Well then you are probably NOT going to run into the 150hz hump then, are you?  I do not have this problem with Forte I or Heresy III.   It is not as if you are going to hear it with any and all Klipsch speakers.  Looking at the bracing on the MCM, I don't think they are prone to 7dB humps in the bass bin.  I think the experiment would be moot. But still looking forward to what you hear.  Maybe you have access to La Scala I or Belle to compare this song with.  That would be informative.

I do have some old beater LSI's that toured with the Oak Ridge Boys to try this on. Really hammered on but still sound good and a real testament to Baltic Birch's durability.

Interesting. I have always thought it was the cabinet being excited by that frequency.   So if it is the horn design, the new La Scala isn't that much different in bass bin design (horn configuration) from the La Scala I to alleviate this problem then?

The new one is one inch thick. I believe it does not make a difference whether it is MDF like Klipsch OEM or Baltic Birch which would be my choice since both will tame that cabinet.

Wow, now THAT'S dedication.  I have not kept track, what speakers do you have?  La Scalas?   Believe it or not, I do not even attempt to keep track of who says what. I only read what is said, not who said it.  Such is the way I am on any forum.   I am all about content not authors.

MCM 1900 three way stack is my current system. I like to buy and fix old speakers so I have gone through a number of them in the last few years.

So you are going to buy this CD?  Well it is pretty good music, but certainly not to everyone's taste.   The song Me And Armini has got some pretty decent bass and that song does not seem to excite the 150hz hump nearly as much as the song Birds.   Also, as an aside, Birds has a VERY low rumbling going on completely divorced from the thumping sound of the a string on the acoustic guitar that bothers the heck out of me.

I am finding over time fidelity is what I am looking for although a lot of electronic stuff with all the weird genre titles sounds bizarre to me. Swapped music with a speaker buyer recently and he was loaded up on Rap full of trash lyrics, if you could call disgusting rants lyrics, and no talent repetition and all those were scrubbed right away. I listen to anything once because you just never know.
