  1. My CF-4's were exactly as you described, with the 3/4" foam, not egg-crate, and placed loosely in the enclosure in a "U" shape. It was not glued to the sides or back. I was told this is factory Klipsch setup. When I opened up my 20 year-old speakers, the foam still looked brand new, no deterioration at all. +++ I am not an expert, I just read the DIY discussion boards, so please consult others for your choices in final damping materials. I was told that fiber-fill works well in sealed speakers, a half-pound of fill for each cubic foot of speaker. Fiber fill can be bought from Parts Express type places, but I think most people to go to Wal-mart, as it is pillow stuffing. One pillow per two speakers, that sort of thing. It goes in fluffy, not stuffed, and it is best to distribute it to the entire enclosure, not just behind the woofs. http://www.walmart.com/ip/Mainstays-Microfiber-Pillow-2pk/14657392 http://www.parts-express.com/cat/cabinet-damping-material/311 I did another project where I used standard 3/4" foam sheet in my DIY box, then cut it to fit the box and attached it with a spray adhesive to all surfaces. It seems to be more common to use the foam in ported enclosures. I haven't used it yet, but using egg-crate foam makes sense to me due to breaking up internal reflections. +++ The only thing I can tell you definitively is that I thought my CF-4's (two 12" woofs and a 12" or so horn driver, MTM design) had that characteristic Klipsch sound with the harshness in the high frequency range. I took the two 3/4" foam sheets out of the bottom section (left two sections with foam on top) and used about a pound of Wal-mart fiber-fill at the bottom but away from the ports, and that harshness went away! I was left with plenty of low-end (it might have even enhanced the low end) and a MUCH more enjoyable sound overall.
  2. baffling? I'm not sure what you mean. You do realize, the dictionary definition of baffling is "to confuse, bewilder, or perplex." +++ I think of the baffle as the outside front of a speaker where the drivers poke through. I'm guessing you might be referring to some sound deadening material, such as fiber-fill, or some foam sheets.
  3. WVU80 NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, ANCHOR!!! In negotiating parlance, "anchoring" means being the first to draw a line in the price sand. What if he wanted $700 for the set?? Geez, I thought I taught you better than this! ROTFLMBO! That's they call you, the Negotiator!
  4. My CF-4's, two-way WTW have XO's made (assembled?) in Mexico.
  5. Dedicated to my son, pictured in my avatar, who is serving his country in the USAF in Germany. And to all the men and women of our armed forces, past, present, and future.
  6. Agree. I hear similar chord progressions, but in that era there were a lot of folk-rock songs, folk ballads that had a similar feel to them. And stealing songs from one another was also common. The Beatles did that in their early years. http://www.cracked.com/article_19848_7-famous-musicians-who-stole-some-their-biggest-hits.html "This old man, he plays one. He plays knick knack on my thumb. With a knick knack paddy wack. Give a dog a bone. This old man comes rolling home." Now sing the Barney song, "I love you, you love me, we're a happy family...". There is nothing new under the sun. Hey, I just made that up! http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Ecclesiastes%201:9
  7. I didn't know either, so I Google'd it. The search had this (Earl's) thread at the top of the results.
  8. It will help your sale here if you post pics, your general location, and some history on the speakers. Then drop your price $200 per speaker, and I'll be right over to pick those up.
  9. These days, I hesitate buying anything off the internet, it seems nothing is safe. I had my identity stolen a few months ago via my Discover Card, and I have no idea how they got my name and account number. Discover's fraud division stopped the transaction when the thieves tried to charge $1500 to my card to Colorado (I live in WV) for "music services" or something like that. They reversed the 3 small, false charges to my card, but now I'm kind of afraid to do any business over the internet.
  10. Mustang Guy has restored something similar, if not the same model, so maybe contact him directly for specific questions. They clean up real nice, and a pair of Heresy's for a buck twenty five would give you some outstanding sound for the price, if they work. They look they have been through the wars!
  11. Jim, you might ask the guys at the AVS.com DIY speakers and subs, forum. They are every bit as helpful as the people are on this forum, with several common members. Ask your questions there and the DIY guys can tailor an answer to your sub budget, woodworking skills, XO's, power needs, etc. I have built two kits which use flat packs, and for a novice no wood working skills guy like me, it was exactly what I needed. The quality of the flat packs are incredible, are CNC computer cut, and everything fits very precisely, with great engineering (read, heavy duty bracing, easy to put together). I put mine together using nothing but glue and some $5 clamps. There is very little sanding, because the seams don't just fit, they match. I got my flat packs from the DIY Soundgroup. They sell their product without regard for making a profit because they support the DIY concept, and I doubt you could find a bigger bang for the buck. Highly recommended, Erich is the guy who runs that operation, a first class guy. He posts on the AVS DIY forum, usually on the "Hey guys..." thread. Good luck, and if you have any questions, feel free to contact me "off the air."
  12. Agree. I use crimping, and it is on more than one connection I crimped the wire so tight I cut it in half, while the connection appeared intact.
  13. Columbus has a profession football team. It's called "Ohio State."
  14. I agree, to a degree, Chris. I also believe there is a growth process involved, and because of that, it is natural and normal that people will come and go from this site, according to their own growth and needs. When a newbie such as myself first joins, everything is interesting. New equipment, new people, lots of learning. The problem is, that after a while, talking over and over about the openness of the mid-range of one speaker vs another reaches a saturation point for some forum veterans, and then other "off-topic" things become more interesting. I think Klipsch has provided a nice meeting place for people interested in their product. There are enough posting sub-forums so people at differing points in their personal growth can still remain and find items, or people of interest, to talk with. Some come for the education, but stay for the entertainment. It's all good.
  15. If you pursue your passions as a vocation instead of an avocation that is OK, but I suggest you think with your head as a business man, not your heart. About 50% of start ups fail within the first year, and after 3 years, 90% are gone. Make sure you have a plan that is sustainable.
  16. Even if they win, I'm not sure they stay together. Wade is old and has been injured, so his contributions to a championship team is now behind him. And James will leave, and sign with the Lakers, for approximately 1 billion dollars, you wait and see. Remember you heard it here, first.
  17. OCD, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Translated, it means you think non-stop about your Klipsch speakers, and when you aren't thinking about them, you are thinking about buying more of them, after pouring over specifications, descriptions, and searching Craigslist and Ebay for a good deal on some Klipsch speakers in the state of Texas, even though you live in New England. If you have more than 20 Klipsch speakers, and/or subs which theaters reject because they are "too loud" and you think you need four of them, then yes my friend, you may have OCD and will fit in perfectly with many of the other denizens who frequent this Klipsch discussion board. Good thing that description doesn't fit anyone on this discussion board. +++ Mustang Guy: Great poll! It was good to be able to click on "all that apply" instead of just one forced choice item. I am expecting at least two people to check "Motocross" as their preference for racing! You might add two items; the ubiquitous "Other, please explain", and for an interest other than Klipsch, how about "Music?" +++ Edit: Oh yeah, and if every one of your posts has been edited because you keep thinking of the "perfect" way to word things even though this is the internet and no one really cares, but you do, a lot, then you might have OCD. I'm glad I'm not like that.
  18. You have a very "high road" approach to an explanation, a much more benevolent approach than I have. I applaud you for that. However, I'm a newcomer, and I haven't felt the need to revive 15 or 20 topics from 5 or 10 years ago with no explanation or comment. The person doing this and their reasons for doing so, must be put into a box I call "awaiting further light."
  19. I finally tracked down the originating posts to read for myself what the hubub was all about. I'm not going to offer my personal opinion on the subject unless someone wants to beat it out of me. That being said, I don't think Mr. PGH is right, and I don't think Mr. Claude is right. I think Mr. Beeker is right.
  20. I'm sure pro audio has its own naming conventions, but I would think that the audio in the film would still be standardized to the 5.1, 7.1 etc. My question is related, was is the 4 in a "four-way?" I presume the usual tweeter, squawker, woofer. After that, are they calling the subs the "four" in the 4-way?
  21. If you've got the woodworking skills, I say build yourself some nice, heavily braced boxes, it sounds like fun! You can put the time and attention to detail into them that would not otherwise be practical in a commercially built box. I would suggest 3/4 MDF, then brace with hardwood. I bet some of the guys on one of the DIY sites like AVS.com could help you design a killer box which would make those drivers sing.
  22. It's been a few days Mr. MeTooLate, how has the full upgrade gone? That Onk has so many features and setup options it wouldn't surprise me if it took a month or more to make your changes and decide what you like. You have some critical listening to do, and that's probably hard to do with the wife and kids in the house. I just moved my Klipsch CF-4's to the living room and set it up using the Onk 717's Audyssey. I think Aud did a really good job matching my different speakers, setting the Cf-4's to -4db relative to reference level, and set my decent MTM center to +2db to keep up with the Klipsch's. Aud picked the XO points on all speakers right out of the spec sheet, crossing over at 40 on L/C/F.
  23. ROTFLMBO! OK, you win! I'm voting for your post for "rant of the year." Uh, make that the best rant of 2005.
  24. I'm from West Virginia, and there are no professional sports here. I like to watch the best players in the biggest games, to see how champions play. I'll go out on a limb here and say it will be Miami vs SA in the finals. Indiana is terrible and has been for months, and SA should be able to overpower the now short-staffed (Ibaka out) OKC squad. +++ This next comment reflects not just the recent terrible reffing, but NBA officiating through the years; I have NO CLUE how the NBA officials call games. No idea. And if you say you do, I will say you don't, because how could you? The REF'S have no clue how to call a game!
