  1. Can those DBX units be placed in line with the speaker level output or does it have to be before the power amp?
  2. I am using a custom Belle 2-way speaker. My amp is a Leben CS-600. I currently don't feel I 'need' an EQ at the moment, but I would like to try one to see what my room is adding / subtracting from my sound.

  7. I feel you should invest in the upper range of the response curve. Lower bass is very much influenced by the placement and room and the Belle will not get you much below 50Hz. And you're correct, it is a bit of a wash.
  8. Nice project. You are light years ahead of most hifi speakers in terms of impact and engagement with the music. I am running a VARY similar set up, but I started with an Altec Valencia and now only have the woofer and enclosure left: Valencia enclosure, 16" Altec 416-8B, Jamo crossover, K510, Faital Pro 206. If I have one issue, the sound feels a little grainy right now. But that can be a product of many small factors. As mentioned above, I also got my 510 from Gentec, and I also ordered a 402 from American Cinema Equipment. I am not a technician in these matters. Bob has also helped me so much along the way. I am happy with the 510 crossed higher (1200Hz) with the Altec woofer, but I have had it crossed lower over a Belle type horn. I have not EQ'ed the 510. Attached is my last 'in room' response curve.
  9. right, so i am currently set up properly. Any flat measurement without checking the group delay is likely out of phase some multiple of 360*...
  10. thanks for the help Chris... ...one more question: is there any issue with me reversing the polarity on the compression driver to measure better? I was reading a lot of old Altec literature and they did this depending on the physical alignment. Thanks again.
  11. Chris, See attached my rough, in-room measurements. What do you think? As I mentioned, this is with compression driver roughly 1.5"-2" back of the woofer voice coil.   12. Chris, just to double check, I am testing the Excess Group Delay at the XO frequency, correct?
  13. I can't access the woofer directly, but I would estimate the compression driver is roughly 2" back of the woofer's voice coil. I adjusted the XO levels and reversed phase. The results are a smooth SPL graph and as mentioned above near 0.0ms on the Excess Group Delay measurement.

  15. using Chris's technique in REW, I can get the excess group delay to about 0.3ms. There is a smoothing and a small bump in SPL that happens at the XO point the closer the excess group delay is to 0.0.

  17. Hello, Question regarding physical alignment of horn and woofer. I am just completing a basic two-way with my K510 horn over and Altec woofer (Valencia). I would like to know what the best practise is for physical aligning the woofer and horn. Should hey both be on the same plane? Can the horn be further back? How do I measure the optimum alignment for my average listening distance? Thanks.
  18. The 500Hz issue is mostly physical. The horn is on top of the cabinet: quite far from the woofer. Its just loosely placed up there for now. The dial allows a slight adjustment of starting point for the high range. The terminal strip on the lower right sets output volume.
  19. Using custom XO made by Werner of Jamo Speakers. There is adjustment built into the XO, but no EQ.
  20. Quick test in room last night: HF206 on K510 over an Altec 16" in bass reflex.

  22. Hello, I've been breaking in a new Faital Pro HF206 on a K510. So far, my experience has been excellent. The driver is crossed around 1000Hz, but should go a lot lower. I am running it in my Altec Valencia cabs. -- I received the following info from the manufacturer regarding this new driver when asked about how it compares to the 204 and the 200: The HF204 and HF206 are exactly the 2" versions of the HF144 and HF146 respectively. The difference is in the air gap's geometry and treatment. Basically we reduced the volume of the air gap (so under the diaphragm) and added absorbent material. The end result is visible in the response curve in the mid-high freqs. It has a flatter (less rising) response above 1.5 kHz. While for the difference between the Titanium 3" VC and the Ketone Polymer 2.5" please know that the differences go beyond just the material because they are indeed two mechanically different compression drivers. The HF200 has a bigger VC hence a bigger volume under the Diaphragm in the air gap. The phase plug is a 3 slot phase plug and the titanium diaphragm is one piece with the surround so it may result in a slightly more nervous higher frequency but also more efficient because of its higher reactivity than polymers. On the other hand the HF204/206 have a 2.5" VC with a whole ketone polymer diaphragm and a 4 slot phase plug. This all together gives these compression drivers a smoother and more linear response throughout and up to the very high frequencies. In the higher fequencies the "sound" may result smoother than the titanium. One final word on Ketone Polymer, it is a very peculiar material because it is a polymer which is loaded with mineral while being sheeted. This allows it to retain the polymer's elasticity but it also gives it a higher rigidity and capability to withstand heat better than other polymers used in these applications. Therefore we consider it to be the best compromise between commonly used polymers lime Mylar and metals like aluminum and titanium.
