  1. My 1981 Hafler Amp is the DH-100 I built myself a one day job but I am very critical so it took three days. I use this to drive the mid/tweeters of my Klipsch R-28F's which is one construction of the all time top ten aamplifiers. I use a 1981 Carver M-400 to drive the bass. I think trying different configurations with the two amps really paid off. I realized just now my love affair with the music can't be infatuation I've been using them over a year now! These two extremely differently configured amps complement each other. My cave now is 10' x 12' having moved from a 10' x 13' cave. Placement and room dynamics need to be tweaked to get the right reflections, right sound stage. My amps put out over 550 watts per channel with no additions or subtractions to all music. I set my pre-amp to the number one position on the volume knob of my 1989 Hafler DH 110 because I have yet to crank it up to listen to some hard rock. So far every instrument I have thrown at it has been faithfully reproduced. My recomendation? Music is different for everyone. Critical listening it is just me. All other listening is for my household and neigbors if I turn it up to the number 3 position on a ten position volume knob. Somedays I bring my favorite recordings to a high end store to listen to the stuff I cannot afford to help with the minor changes to improve the sound but I gave it up until October when I will buy a new cartridge made of wood?
  2. Current 180 grams is a better plastic. It doesn't retain a "memory" and can be played more than once without distorting the recording. This is why 180g half speed mastered recordings are very costly. In the '70's and '80's the US went to cheaper lighter material while many Countries the UK for instance always used quality pressing, it is about the music. I have quality pressings of Pink Floyd from Uraguay The Concert for Bangladesh (spelling?) UK Television Red on a red plastic UK then Mobile Fidelity came out with half speed masters and made the CD a waste of money until computers came out with 96,000 samples per second making s/n wow and flutter rumble a thing of the past.
  3. I would go with the Lascala's...you will find the RF-7 and RF-7II both work fine in stereo or in 5.1 setups. I have a 2-channel setup using enough power to make ears bleed. Like my car which goes 140MPH at 2800RPM's I keep my 600 watts turned up to where I just hear sound then depending on what I am listening to I turn it up just a tad to where I can hear the full sound stage and adjust the shelving type of tremble and bass. I usually have the volume not even 1/8 of a turn about set at less than 1 on a volume knob that goes to 10. Bi-wire and bi-amp if possible. I use one 250 watt capable (0Hz - 250khz ruler flat amp to drive tweeters/midrange. One 300 watts capable (10Hz-250KHz +-3dbs[10Hz-150KHz +-0]). I chose two different manufacturers because they compliment each other. Both amps cover the dynamic and sonic range excellent. I changed my setup before I moved and found switching the amps fixed a problem I do not think I might hear. Damping factor on one up to 250dbs (or higher) the other rated 50dbs (conservative at least 150dbs). If you do not know what Damping Factor is it is the amplifiers ability to drive the woofer/s from full excursion back to original resting position so the higher the damping factor the better (more accurate the bass sounds. Because woofers can be very light or very heavy the ability to have woofers move efficiently is what I feel the reason someone needs to invest in a subwoofer. Two speakers or six Klipsch's, any model, really only needs two speakers to reproduce a surrounding stage. I even hear the background sounds correctly placed even with very demanding material. Hope this makes sense!
  4. I have very little experience but usually when crossovers are changed it is to make the frequency response more sonically flat in the 20Hz to 20KHz range. This is something Klipsch is good at. You might read things like "the sound is to bright", "the midrange sounds muddy", "the bass has no umph (impact)". These are what a new crossover attempts to fix. So with extended listening with your electronics you will find the choice that suits you.
  5. Stephen Stills writes this fantastic Manassas 2 LP set with 4 different formats one to each side and I wonder did Steve piss off the soundman? On Nakamichi 581 I get an over driven signal at 3dbs in the red which explains why the LP's sound overdriven. Have not seen my copy of Thick as a Brick but the bass properly thumped every instrument in place the violin sweeter than the flute. I have a lot of 30 to 40 year old MFSL half speed mastered stuff and I have Fairport Convention with and without Sandy Denny. How does those Brits do it? Fleetwood Mac before fame and after produce stuff I can play all day but some groups really stole our bucks. I've seen live most music from my favorite musicians but why oh why can a guy like Joe Walsh or Ted Nugent entertain us with perfect sound reproduced concert after concert yet some of these other groups record noise.I have seen Buddy Guy play his guitar right in my face. Robert Cray and BB King on his 75th Birthday not one mistake yet some engineers screw up the master of people some long dead. What were they thinking? Uriah Heap, Television with Tom Verlaine, even some early Black Oak Arkansas, Ramones, the list goes on why did they allow the engineers to produce audible wow and flutter unfocused instruments trashed masters?
  6. My question is why insert another item into the music? I am sorry I personally hate clouds. I have four hundred blank cd's two hundred dblank dvd's seven terrabytes of free hard drive space yet have only 15 gigabytes of music. I record using .wav format so I can play it in my 99 Caddy over the 580 watt Bose system. I live in very rural USA so I drive on road made out of dirt and potholes. For both vehicles I use my Ipod 8 gig Nano or cd's each loaded with about 78 road songs. At home I can use my download to cloud or download to disk but I never go to the cloud. So many different items such as security cameras only load to the cloud which they charge for incrimentally. It is much the same with Youtube where yt says load all your music with us so we can insert commercials. So we are to my point why insert your music onto somebodies servers of questionable quality when it won't be long Amazon or whomever is also going to insert commercials? Youtube does it. Kindle does it with books. Why support this notion clouds are good?
  7. Is there clear lead tape on reel to reel like on a metal oxide cassette or video cassette? If so connect foil to the oxide right next to the connection. If not I'd connect the foil one foot from the end of the tape.
  8. A Holman is a good find at $300 I do not think things need replacing until something breaks. Without connecting anything other than the amp turn every knob through its entire cycle. My equipment is from 1980 except one of my preamps (current is from 1988-89). No hiss but can heat the place. Some very low level hiss should be present when volume is set to zero but by the time you hear sound background hiss better be zero. My preamp has jfets for .00002 distortion...maybe keep an eye out for a Hafler or Carver preamp? If you become dissatisfied with Thomas Holman? Wow Teac! I am with paul79 on replacement parts but only if you are not satisfied with how Holman currently reproduces. My stuff is old but I will probably go back to taking the top off my furnacemaybe sticking the one amp next to the air conditioning duct. NOT! But I will be running with no lid any reduction in heat is good.
  9. I hook mine up to the amp's speaker output through the screw and tighten the knob down to hold in place.
  10. I connected mine to the amp a very powerful amp I do not overpower to get great sound. I first hooked up to a 5.2 system and Klipsch puts OEM to shame.
  11. Is it valid to lift recievers and purchase the heaviest? I used the heaviest 23 pound amp I have to drive the low end for a few months. Then as planned now drve the low end with my 13 pound amp. First setup I could turn the volume up a quarter to half way up. Changed conn now at
  12. I was thinking great setup great room! Then I read "100 year old record player...repurposed" and saw the open lid. Is that a Victrola or a Cheney? I have a working 1913 Cheney a tad more ornate and fully functional. My Cheney is fully functional and I have about fifty acrylic records to go with it. Wondered how could you do that to an antique? But I also have a cabinet from the 50's that held Sherwood mono tube equipment. Preamp, amp and tuner all tubes but nonfunctional. Did you remove the black color to get that mahogany look or is it stained? I ask because I stripped the black age color to find a beautiful finish underneath. I am thinking of refinishing my Cheney after getting an estimate of worth. Did you strip and put new shellac or did you strip stain and shellac your antique?
  13. Late to the party! Go with the 75lbs mono block vintage Carvers? I heard a setup with these 150 pounds of tubes connected to Quad Electrostatic speakers back in 1989-90 a saxophonist just as if he were in the room so amazing I wondered if box speakers can produce that same effect. Have not tested anything yet but I hope to achieve that when I am finished with my setup here!
  14. If there is a hole in the center are your speakers to far apart? My listening room is setup speakers on short wall. What I propose as an addition each wall is the opposite of the other. Floor is thick carpet ceiling is reflective tiles. One wall on right is reflective the other absorptive back wall absorbs front reflective. Size 10x12 perfect for he R28F's? I don't know if the sound is any different then when I had them placed wider in my very "live" 13x12 room. Also here I am six feet from the center of my speakers the old setup 5 1/2 feet. I need to listen a bit more, I think the setup I have now is the best.
  15. I am thinking of switching my amps to mono. Right now I am driving two amps in stereo 200 watts to mid range/tweeters and the other amp 300 watts to the bass speakers. Since I am already using 500 watts per channel the switch to 500 watts mono is not much different. You probably never will over drive speakers with too much power but if your amp doesn't have the power the signal can clip damaging amp and speakers. If I had two Macs I'd use the mono capabilities and your maximum volume rises just a tad. The difference in sound @ 1 watt and 100 watts is 3 decibels? I believe you will never challenge your speakers by listening that loud. What I didn't relate is that I never go over half way up on my volume knob, most listening is done at a quarter turn on the volume. Use your amps set to mono because you will never overdrive your speakers but at lower volume you should hear greater detail higher highs lower lows with the ability to use equalization to lift the music where needed?
