Been out of circulation for a while - too many things going on around home and work, but I know of only one place to come for good, sound Klipsch advice (yeah, it's a pretty bad pun too...) Have been very happy with my HT setup for a while, but - horrors! - the dreaded "upgradeitis" bug has hit again. My home is like many out there, designed 35 years ago with a basement most unsuited for a good media room. One has to make do with existing layouts for speaker placement, as well as keeping the wife happy (and not "tripping over those %#&@# speakers again"). My surrounds are placed on the floor about 15 feet back of the main listening area, with about 10' of seperation between them. Due to furniture and room constraints, one faces directly at listeners (at least backs of heads), while the other has to be twisted about 30 degrees from the first. 1st question; would I gain anything by switching from my 2.2's to something like a wall mounted surround such as an SS1 or RS3? Wall mounting might offer somewhat more latitude as to placement, although they would have to be mounted near the ceiling, instead of at ear level. Would WDST overcome any questions about angle of placement or am I asking for more trouble? 2nd question; if upgrading is the proper answer, which might be a better match to my current system - SS1's or RS3's? The SS1's would be a proper match for my center channel, but of course the RS3's are the next step up the ladder (or is bigger not necessarily better?) Spec wise, at least, both are close to the specifications of my mains (which are placed a bit off kilter too, but thats another story..) Any thoughts or opinions greatly appreciated.

When we talked, I quoted the dimensions of the Cornwalls from the Klipsch website. I waw told they were pretty close to what these speakers are - he also made a point of how HEAVY they were, which certainly describes a Cornwall. My wife has actually seen these speakers, albiet years ago. From her memory, she indicated they looked a lot more like pictures of CWs I found on the web than any other Klipsch speaker. I just don't get the weird porting. In response to eq_shadimar, a ported Heresy? I was given to understand that Heresys were (are) sealed units. A friend has had a pair of Klipsch speakers in storage for a number of years and may be willing to part with them. I have not seen these speakers (as they are stored 2 hours drive away from here) so cannot be sure what model they are (he is not sure either). From the descriptions my friend has given me, they would seem to be a set of vintage Cornwalls from about the early 70's. He has described them as a short, fat, BIG 3 way ported speaker, but his description of the port does not fit with any of the Cornwalls I have ever seen pictures of. To be specific, they are a typical (top to bottom) tweeter, midrange, woofer configuration, but are ported (round, 2 1/2 - 3") to the side of the woofer instead of the three rectangular ports on the base of the cabinet. Are these indeed Cornwalls or is there some model of Klipsch that fits this description better from this vintage? (Been thru the classic section of this website and haven't seen anything that matches any closer.) Next question; if these are Cornwalls in good working order, any suggestions on what (if any) mods might be recommended or necessary for running with more modern receivers/amps, or just general improvement. I wouldn't mind getting some idea of what I might have to put into these for a good restoration and to keep the wife happy. I stand corrected. My intentions were to run the old sub in-line with which ever speakers I settled on using. The new sub will run off the LFE line from the receiver/amp. Both my rear channels and the center have similar low frequency limits (50 hz on the 2.2s and 60 on the SC1) so I was going to set them large and use the sub crossover to blend. Okay, here's another question for the Klipsch gurus out there.. I am going to upgrade my system with a new sub in the near future (more on that in a new thread shortly) and have been wondering what to do with my old sub. It just doesn't quite cut it for HT (my main listening mode) but is still producing a very acceptable sound. Given the specs of my system, would I be better off using it to fill out my rear surrounds or run it with my SC1 up front. I realize a great deal of sound information goes to the center channel but how much is in the lower frequencies that a sub would handle as compared to the rears? Thoughts? How true... Not all these people have a home of their own grant you (some still live with mommy & daddy so there is no way the folks are gonna let them blare their music!)and some live in a condo or townhouse so thats not gonna happen either. When I was a teenager and still lived at home, my car stereo was the best that I could afford (mind you, 60 watt amps were the cutting edge at that time). When I got my own place, the home stereo improved to the limits my apartment landlord would tolerate (the friend who introduced me to Klipsch could never understand why I wouldn't buy his spare set of LaScalas). Times have yet again changed, I am married with a very tolerant wife and a house WITH LARGE BASEMENT. At Christmas she unwittingly re-awakended the dreaded upgraditis monster that was hibernating in me, and another chapter has begun. Some of you have exressed curiosity about my decision to omit SVSubs from my short list. I do believe SV Subs produces a high quality product with excellent customer support (have not seen a bad review yet). My reasons for not considering them have more to do with other factors than the quality of product. As stated in my profile, I live north of the 49th parallel. I work in a business that ships trans-border enough to know that it is not always an easy task. Paperwork, duties and delays are potential and sometimes all too real (and that was before the events of last fall - it hasn't gotten any easier). I also value the ability, in the event of problems, to load up my speaker, drive 20 minutes(on a bad traffic day) and have my concerns addressed and/or resolved. In some cases, my local dealers will come right to my home to correct problems or assist in setup. It would also be very difficult for an on-line store or direct shipper to allow me to demo a product in my home, with my own equipment to see if it is right for my environment. In the defense of on-line stores however, the above reasons are taken with a grain of common sense. If such a store can give me a substantial saving on a similar product, the benefits may well outweigh the hazards. I do not suffer price-gouging from locals lightly (this has never been a problem in my case as my prefered dealers have always treated me well and are very price-competitive). It would seem by reading some of the previous responses in this thread that I am quite fortunate to have the local dealers I do. This only underlines my reasoning for supporting local dealers that reciprocate with good service and competitive pricing. The converse is also very true - don't support your local dealers and they may not be there when you do need them. Heaven knows there are few enough audio dealers in my part of the world, let alone good ones. I would like to see the good ones stay around. Still weaking my sub for optimal results and have gained a lot of useful info from this forum. My ten year old Yamaha sounds better than it ever has (amazing what a pair of 7 inchers can do when hooked up with quality cable and crossovers set properly). HOWEVER, while it is great for giving my music a good bottom end, it simply is not quite there for HT. Thinking seriously about upgrades and have have narrowed my long list to a short one. Two of the candidates (besides Klipsch KSW12) are either a Boston Acoustics PV600 or PV800. Never seem to see much mention of BA products in these forums - any problems?? Thoughts, comments?? Still tweaking my sub... I have seen somewhere on this forum a chart for compensation values when setting sound levels with different frequencies of test tones. (eg. lower frequencies have to be boosted as the rat-shack SPL meter doesn't register as well). I have been searching for over an hour and can't find the blessed thing. Could someone re-print this or at least submit a link to an older message that has this? Thanks. Interesting comments on this thread... I have a set of Kg4's which currently utilize the factory supplied riser "to better couple the speaker to the floor for maximum bass". These speakers currently sit on thick carpet with heavyweight underlay over concrete slab. Would feet be an improvement or a detriment in this particular case? I have also read in other threads that some members have used ceramic tile over carpet to anchor their speakers. Would this be effective in my case (with the risers as opposed to feet)? This post is directed more to other Canadian members... I read in this forum and on others about some of the many online auctions and suppliers that handle older Klipsch designs (Ebay, Ubid, etc) and drool. Unfortunately, many, if not most of these only ship to customers in the USA and not up here to the Great White North. I have visited Ebay.ca, and although there are some deals to be had, the site is a paler version of it's US parent, carrying the few items that suppliers are willing to send north. And Ubid ships only to US addresses. Does anyone know of Canadian sites or other North American sites which might supply Klipsch lovers north of the 49th? I am lucky enough to have a local dealer, but that doesn't help if say I was interested in locating a set of Cornwalls, or an Academy center.
