An 8" subwoofer isn't going to match the bass of the Fortes...the radiating area of an 8" woofer is 50.24, where the fortes are 226.08 with the two speakers and 12" woofers (452.16 with the addition of the passive radiator.) True bass requires massive air movements, and an 8" sub isn't going to do it.
What you'll get is more distortion and the illusion of bass as it makes additional distortions in the 60hz-ish range, making you think there is more bass.

Buyer stopped responding and did not show...subwoofer still available.

I, too, transitioned to 3.1 from a surround setup. It's still exciting and sound great for movies, but I'm way more interested in music and getting that right.

If you care at all about imaging and creating a believable soundstage, both speakers must be placed symetrically in the room. This includes distance to the back and side walls and most importantly the amount of toe in. Identical, or as close to it as possible.

Depends on the room. If I were to place speakers symmetrically in my room, you'd have a heavy left side tilt to the sound due to a large opening on the right side of the room. It's about balancing the acoustics depending on what your surroundings are.

His asking price of $1200 is Ebay fantasy land. The average price used is $674 and the highest known selling price was some NEW old stock Ch2's sold on Ebay Nov 2016 from Wisconsin for $1221. $1200 is well into La Scala territory.
He says in the ad " Upgraded with Bob Crites Titanium tweeters ..." I thought Crites offered diaphragms, not whole tweeters for the Ch2. Could somebody clarify?
$1200 is a bit high, but it depends where you're located. I sold a pair for $800 and they are routinely selling for around $1,000 in the CT area.

The argument for smaller drivers delivering more punch is just not true.
A well designed 15" will be better than an equally designed 12". A larger cone area can be lighter, therefore more efficient, having less distortion and the ability to move more air. Smaller drivers must be heavier to have the same amount of punch or low-end reach of a larger driver.
Find yourself a really well designed 18" woofer and you won't ever say a 6,8,12, etc. has more punch.

They've got the mumps!

I've owned both and currently have the Forte III.
The Forte III will blow the Forte I out of the water. Better midrange, better bass, more detailed highs. It really is a completely different speaker.

If everyone waits a year or two to buy used...there will be no used speakers to have. Someone has to buy new to keep Klipsch going - they don't make any money from used.

I avoided removing the four rubber washers, as suggested by the warning because otherwise it becomes almost impossible to be able to remove the grill again
What do you mean? The rubber washers are for shipping purposes. The grills are easily removed without them.

GLWS! I've got a pair and they are amazing speakers.

JBL is bringing back a couple vintage speakers. ...they will have a tough time coming up with new designs (at least for their synthesis line) since they fired all their top engineers that had been there for 40+ years.

Good description of efficiency vs sensitivity in that link.
However...not sure I'd put too much trust in his ability to determine sound quality:
"There is no connection between the efficiency and the sound quality."
...I think there was this guy who said efficiency is inversely proportional to distortion. I wonder if he ever made any speakers we enjoy... :-)

...not a good deal
you can get them brand new for $2200ish delivered.

Does that mean you're not going to turn them into 3-ways any time soon?? [emoji185]
Nope! My Forte III have that covered.

5.5ft is a bit close to a speaker of this size with the drivers as far apart as they are. You may be able to tell where the crossover point is sitting that close which may make it sound like it's coming from multiple drivers rather than a single source.

Thanks everyone. I have been trying to research your comments as we go along.
Grizzog, what kind of music you play on RF-7 III? Confused why you have both?
Primaluna Prologue 5 is tube. Bkwa1959, how often do tubes blow?
Pzannucci, given what you said, do you think the 6 recommended so far all do that?
you guys are great. Thanks
Why I have both? I love music and like different systems. The fortes and 7s aren't my only speakers...
I listen to quite literally every genre. The fortes are better for 2-channel. I prefer the 7s for movies. Their height and outright power make them great for that. The 7s also have a matching center.
The fortes midrange is much more pronounced and I feel better for most music. If you prefer heavy bass music, the 7s may be better due to their enormous slam.

Agreed. I've got a pair but I'm not about to start taking them apart. I only do that when I have to.

RF 7 iii or Rp8000 for listening distance of 13 feet.

RF-7 III . They're better in every way to the RP series. I don't think either would be overkill for that space.
