  1. Roon can be bit perfect if you configure it that way. Your signal path will tell you what it is doing to the bits.
  2. Not 100% sure but I believe streaming audio over ethernet or wifi to Shield tops out at 48kHz. Over HDMI you can go to 192kHz. Roon is adjusting automatically.
  3. Just a few comments on the posts above from today. Yes, Roon can suck in your local library, as well as your Tidal and Qobuz accounts, and internet radio, apply really good meta data to it in it's own local DB, and then stream it out to any supported Roon endpoint (roon ready, roon tested, airplay, sonus, chromecast...). All controlled from an App. It supports any music format I can think of. Roon can be configured to send the original data bits without any modification to those endpoints, or it can apply just about any amount of fuckery you desire: SRC, DSP, EQ, convolution filters.... Jriver and Audirvana can do this too - they may have any edge with izotope SRC but they lack the metadata DB that Roon has. That is the real value of Roon - it's metadata, hyperlinks, recommendations - it opens up whole new worlds (especially if you have it linked to Tidal or Qobuz.) I've been using Roon for 4 years now. I came from iTunes and Audirvana. It took me at least a month to get used to Roon. Roon would prefer you use "tags" but I still create playlists and my Qobuz playlists also sync up with Roon. When I first told Roon to import my local music library, it got about 75% correct. I had to spend a lot of time going through my Albums to edit metadata. Roon does have a lot of import preferences to help this process now and has come a long way. Just an FYI.
  4. Yes, the MDC is a "smart NIC" that runs BluOS as well as built-in code from Roon (it's a Roon ready device) that allows Roon Core to stream music directly to it via Roon's proprietary streaming protocol (RAAT) over TCP/IP. Note when you have it setup this way, you may see two entries for the MDC in Roon under settings-audio - one "roon ready" entry and one under "other roon devices" via Airplay. I believe the MDC supports Airplay and so does Roon. You want to enable the "roon ready" device.
  5. Streaming stereo hi-res audio requires relatively little bandwidth. CD quality is 1.4mbit/sec. hi-res 192/24 is around 10mbit/sec. Even if you double this for protocol and transport overheads, most internet plans can easily handle at least CD quality streaming audio. Most properly configured home wifi networks can too. Video is a different story - providers like Netflix, Amazon Prime etc all have home internet minimums for various levels of video quality. Most require a home internet service of at least 25mbit/sec for top quality video 4K/8K - more if there are other devices in the home using internet bandwidth.
  6. You want to see Roon recognize the M32 at the end of the line with an IP address as rplace's screenshot shows above with his NAD T758. Your music tests that you found irritating were done with the OS Mixer at the end of the line - meaning your Window 8.1 laptop was performing a lot of fuckery with the sound.
  7. I can't remember if you said your M32 has the DD BluOS MDC module? I thought you did but then you mentioned your Win8.1 core is directly connected to the M32 via hdmi. Can you clarify? Also - when you click on the signal path, do you see a picture (or at least the name) of your M32 at the end of the line? This would confirm that Roon recognizes your device.
  8. Roon can span the gamut from no-color (the file is sent bit-perfect to the endpoint DAC) to lots of color (SRC, DSP, EQ etc). His signal path screen shot should tell more of the story.
  9. When listening to Roon, can you post a screen shot or two of your signal path? - it's the colored icon to the left of the previous-track button at the bottom of the Roon app.
  10. Not everything works with everything in the streamer world unfortunately. I would suggest as option-1, use Volumio to stream tidal and other sources to a raspberry-pi that sends the digital stream to your Yamaha. i.e. use the Sabre DAC builtin to your Yamaha. If you buy a separate streamer/dac combo, it will send analog via rca to the yamaha which will reprocess it through its DAC anyhow. Note I don't have any experience with Volumio but it seems like it would meet most of your needs. option-2 would be to look at Roon to manage your library and streaming sources (tidal, internet radio) and then stream directly to the Yamaha via Airplay - or down the road get the bluesound which is roon-ready. just brainstorming here - and looking for ways to save money and unnecessary steps by using the Dac inside the yamaha.
  11. Do you have Apple devices or non-Apple devices?
  12. Correct - everything goes through the Roon Core which runs on some device on your home network - in my case, an old iMac. It's job is to manage your music sources, content, and streaming endpoints. All your sources - Tidal, internet radio, Qobuz, or your local music library files - are available to the core. If you have a Tidal account, you enable it in the Core which then talks to the Tidal API using your account. Then, via the app, you tell the core what to stream where - in your case, the M32. The core will talk via RAAT - Roon's streaming protocol - directly to the M32 which is Roon Ready, meaning it can receive RAAT. BluOS is not involved.
  13. I use Roon with a couple of Bluesound Pulse 2i speakers - it should be similar to your M32 since they are both "Roon Ready" devices. Roon can completely replace the BluOS app and will stream directly to your M32. I only use the BlueOS app to apply firmware updates and do basic management of my Bluesound devices. The other thing I did in the BlueOS app was use their EQ which they have dialed in pretty well for the Bluesound Speakers. I could have done this via Roon if I wanted too but i liked the idea of applying "global EQ" to all things streaming to the speakers rather than EQ for Roon streaming only. The cool thing is Roon sees that EQ was applied via the BlueOS App and reports it as part of the streaming path so you know it is there. Nice integration between Roon and BlueOS.
  14. I have a PS Audio DAC. They are a good company with great customer service. Paul's videos are painful. The DAC uses an FPGA chip and they would release new code every 6-12 months for several years there for a while. It was like getting a new, mostly improved, DAC every year. They are focused now on the next generation DAC. I still use mine and they support it. It is Roon Ready which is its main selling point for me.
  15. I still have my HP 12C from the late 80's and use it all the time. I also have Finanx 12c v0.2.8 loaded on my laptop that works very well. Search for it - it's a free download.
  16. Oscar Peterson's Christmas album was recorded in 1995 when he was still recovering from a stroke on his left side. There are some Youtube videos of him with Dick Cavett in 1979 that are really cool. Oscar Peterson Plays the Cole Porter Songbook from 1959 is a good intro to his stuff.
  17. I've got a Christmas playlist that has been years in the making. Most of it is comprised of 1, 2 or 3 songs (at most) from a single album. Very few Christmas albums are listenable all the way through IMHO. Here are a few jazzy Christmas albums that are:
  18. It's hard to hear from that clip. It's a funky track that I'm not familiar with so I don't know how it should sound. Do you have headphones? Do you hear it through headphones? Is it coming from both H4's or just one? I play that track from Qobuz --> Roon --> macbook or Sonus and I don't hear distortion - just an asston of bass. I can't run it through my H3's or Lascalas right now. Do you have roon volume leveling set to auto? Does roon give you another version to try in Tidal? Just brainstorming.
  19. That track has a ton of bass. Maybe something else in the room is vibrating at the resonate frequency?
  20. This is what I would do too. Go to accessories4less, get the yamaha RX-A1080 for $900 bucks, plug all your sources into it including your TT and oppo, connect the pre-outs to your Luxman amps, and bobs-your-uncle.
  21. Why are your Luxmans using the multi-channel input on your Technics processor?
  22. Can you clarify a few things? Is your marantz in the spare bedroom? Is the modem/router in your living room the one given to you by your ISP? What's preventing your from running an ethernet cable from the modem/router in your LR directly to the ethernet port on the marantz?
  23. It is lesson in supply and demand. Money supply is through the roof competing for fewer goods limited by labor shortages and supply chain disruptions.
  24. I've discovered a lot of new music through Roon's features and interfaces - part of the "immersive experience" that @rplace mentions above. "Immersive experience" can quickly lead to an hour or two of exploring links and meta-data on artists, albums, reviews, building playlists etc. I've got it integrated with Qobuz which enhances the experience, but not mandatory. My turntable doesn't see much use anymore.
