  1. I've been to upscale audio in berwyn, while they carry tube amp their prices are not close to my budget. Also I was surprised with music direct having no demo room at all. My open concept appartment living room is about 12x8 in meters small. I lsten soft (conversation level) to jazz vocals and I listen loud (train passing level.) to rock music, where they are supposed to. Sent from my SM-G920P using Tapatalk
  2. Agree, just to add if I where near your area I will be glad to set it up for you plus DLNA (depending on your subrsciption, it may totally get ride of your chromecast). Sent from my SM-G920P using Tapatalk
  3. I hear you but for me, seeing a car driven by other people on the street gives me an initial impression on how a car could perform while I drove it myself compare to specs that nobody really seems to know the real life value. Haven't you seen a car zoom ahead of you while you are pushing your car past 80's and told yourself - someday I'll get that car. Or why would those nuts (including me) post their audio setup in the net if there's no sense in it. Of course I am not implying that youtube demo are absolute / proper way to demo, I am just saying in the absence of real world demo, I would take youtube anytime to get an initial feel of things, that includes audio. Pardon me, perhaps I am really trying hard to justify my youtube demos but that is out of context of this thread.
  4. OK so there are 2 videos here while they are crappy, if you listen closely I can say the SET tube amp wins, hands down with exception, that is: With the SET amp not only that the bass has more presence but you can hear the detail of the string being pluck. Also the voice is more romantic / palpable as they say. And the highs are sweet (lush). While the marantz do all of those things the SET amp does it does it with a little less sweetness and lush. Although the one thing the marantz does better is that it has more of the mezzo-soprano voice (hopefully captured this in this video). More bass, more low end, making the SET sound sweet but a little lean in comparison. In the end, the SET goes and marantz stay. On the second thought if the audio bug bites, I may get the same SET amp again. any thoughts or better yet let's see / hear your vids
  5. So let me take the first shot. I uploaded 2 youtube videos to compare Marantz vs SET tube amp. Please note that this make more sense heard via earphones / headphones. 6. Humor me but I'm just trying new things. Regardless of platform may it be youtube, vimeo, facebook, etc. people now a days (that was yesterdays actually) has been uploading video show casing a thing or two about themselves and their particular interest. So I thought why not demo online? In the absence of real world audition I take youtube demo anytime. I said youtube demo because this kind of audition will not give you all there is to know about the system (there's alot I know). It's just like meeting Jim for the first time. I know his name, I know how he looks like and just enough to get both of us to know each other, the obvious stuff. But then if I want to know him better maybe I'll live-in with him for a while - Ops lets make that a her and call her vanessa, its fun that way
  7. Just to get an idea, how much should be a reasonable price for that? I suppose the best models are 222C, 299B and LK 48B variants? I listen to fisher on youtube and none of those suits my cup of tea. Since you brought it up, I was also looking for eico hf-81 (too pricey currently) and scott LK 48b. However when I did audition both (virtually, please note that there is no other way I can audition right now) I got a feel that #eico hf-81 does throw everything and I am not able to tell which instrument goes where and over lapse each other (if you know what I mean). The LK 48B however is a bit cleft lipped / muffled. Pardon me for both followers of these great amps but I haven't hear them in real life yet. Peace
  8. Hmm.. been wanting to hear the upgraded version of the KG's. I'm from Lombard, IL btw. I hear you on the SQ and agrees that there's NO 1 amp to do it all. With that said I am looking for a sweet amp with somewhat rolled of highs and steroid bass (midbass). And it should be noted that VOCAL / VOICE is top most on my list.
  9. roger, I've been upgrading my speaker for sometime now and have decided to invest on the KG4. I have plan to move to the cornwall but is limited by funds as of now. Are you suggesting cornwall (or alike) with the budget I have? thanks. Chris, Have you considered bumping your budget by just a little and going with Forte' II or chorus II speakers? Roger Tempting.. how much would be an acceptable / reasonable price for forte II and cornwall?
  10. Saw that.. I am monitoring this thread for tube related comments. I guess the other page most chime in mostly on speaker placement / upgrade and toe in stuff. Also I read that you are using BL-02 Class A SET (mine was gemtune brand). I let my amp go not only because I hear it ring a couple of times but also because it looses 100 - 500hz on the singers voice. I was really fantastic but I prefer to to hear that 100hz - 500hz (bass bloom) I heard from my vintage marantz (perfect but lacking that tube euphonic touch).
  11. Where are you located Cris? It's possible that there are forum members nearby who have tube equipment which they can bring over for an audition in your system-- Maynard That will be the best. I am from Lombard, IL and appreciate if there's anybody body near me to let me check how their tube amp sounds like. P.S. I am the one who always crank up his marantz at unit 08, ssshh...
  12. nice, I specially like the toe tapping / swinging you got there
  13. James, heard the 811a tube amps and they are promising to say the least. Sent from my SM-G920P using Tapatalk
  14. Jim, been reading about the SEP here frequently, problem is I haven't heard it yet. Where can I audition this? Sent from my SM-G920P using Tapatalk

  16. Just to ask, aren't those 300B (and maybe 2a3) a one trick poney? I heard of consonance 300B amplifier years ago and from memory the guy uses SUB WOOFER for the bottom end (he got tiny bookshelf). I read that 300B is particularly good for vocals (not sure)? I did go to bigger KG4 from my clifton bookshelf cause the sub woofer integration just kills the music.
  17. OK, I was right that those 300B and 2a3 cost alot. Do you know of a clone version of this amps? Other suggestion on the used market maybe?
  18. Yikes, is there one with in my budget? Can you be so kind to name some brands model to check? Sorry for my initial expression, I am actually thrilled on that comment but afraid that is beyond my budget.

  21. Hi there, I am new here and have ask the forum to suggest tube amplifier with budget of $500 (I know ). Here's my first post https://community.klipsch.com/index.php?/topic/162294-help-tempted-by-ebay/ So far, I have had an experience on chinese SET tube amp. While it did WOW me for a while, I've outgrown it hearing that it is lacking midbass / voice say 100 to 500 degrees hz compared to my marantz vintage amp. Here is the link of my marantz playing Ayako Hosokawa where ALL things audio will be judge.. haha https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9x-w8Bum4iY I am actually looking for decent power integrated amp (I got no problem with 14watts tube amp before). Audibly / Sonically I am after LUSH (sweet a bit rolled off on top or rounded top), got that a MIDBASS BLOOM, and is WET (romantic, don't know how to further explain). OK so my listening room is about 5x5 meters, I am fond of listening from vocal / standard jazz (fav: frank sinatra / ayako hosokawa) to heavy metal (fav: black sabbath). The best thing that describe what I am looking for so far is this, quoted:
  22. I love that amp, that's my 2nd unit. I may buy another one if pristine condition and budget allows
  23. Exactly what I am looking for, if I can romanticize like that with my audio, then I'm in heaven.
  24. Jim, thank you for pointing this out. I have a video comparison of this uploading soon into youtube (if that helps). That tube amp is actually a chinese SET amp, while it did WOW me for a while, my somewhat picky ears out grown it. That is because comparing to my marantz (not much lush / sweetness there), it is lacking let say 100hz to 500hz pronunciation of Ayako's voice (which my marantz doesn't). Actually, I am not looking for power (that is beyond my arms and limb budget). I am looking for sonic signature MIDBASS BLOOM, LUSH (sweet) and WET (I can't further describe but read it somewhere and it make sense). I am not looking for MUCH on presence, ambiance, 3D holographic, etc IMHO that does not make the music.
