    RIP Prince

drove past paisly park today, one after. A memorial. I got nothing, no CDs, no records, nothing on my harddrives. I miss miss him as a real famous Minnesotan. The party he threw for the Lynks was great in my book.
  2. Getting old is a *****. I grew up playing a a band and living on a farm driving old johnny poppers. Did dumb shit like sticking my head in Jefferson Airplanes speakers while Grace was singing White Rabbit. My ears have always had some problems. But notice 10 years ago tinitus in my ears after long drives home from work. Now I have nothing left above 4K in either ear! Lot of sound left to listen to, but I have to imagine the cymbals sometimes. Good luck, take care of your ears.
  3. Thanks Bob, I agree and will be leaving the center forte intact as is. Just up grade, remove the foot and stand up in the center when I am done. You don't have to get to far off center of LP to notice the midrange horn is a little narrowly focused when on its side. Now playing with acoustic treatments. I am playing blind with no real room measurements. But I like the way the bass tightened and you could hear the notes clearly with a bunch of insulation just laying around!
  4. This is a test, but my ears like it!
  5. What speed is/will be required to stream 4k content? My phone company is brining fiber into the house! ( 150 year old sitting on a new basement ). They of course want to sell their TV service, phone and internet. I am only interested in the internet.
  6. I just won the lottery! I am 3.5 miles from town and on the end of a DSL line and get maybe at best 4 mps for internet speed. Last week the telephone company just stopped out and asked if we wanted fiber. The company got a grant for expanding rural broadband. They got 150,00 and will get 30 farm housed fibered. Our road was one that was picked. They can pull fiber a 1.5 miles from the main road and cover 5 homes in that pull. I never thought I would see that in my lifetime. So now I am back to considering 4K and HDMI 2.2A being important to my future. I just can quite believe it. Probably take a year yet before I see it.
  7. Thanks WMcD, I think we were typing in perfect alignment. lol. I understand your thoughts now! Just in case I chicken out of the Forte center idea, how much overkill is the Forte on tall stands for surround speakers (5.1). Where would you aim them? I was thinking of a wider dispersion surround speaker originally (KSP-S6). Assuming I find a good KLF-C7? as a center. Stereo music is still priority over Theater. Thanks WMcD, you bullet point number 7 was most helpful to move forward!
  8. I have been playing for a week with the new fort 1 horizontal and vertical, level midranges and having the new center much lower. I have to agree, the differences are very minimal for my tired old ears. I believe I am staying with forte laying on it side, no mods except Crites. I may even cut the legs off the table the center sits on to be able to mount a new TV lower on the wall. If I had to do this all over again, I would make three casters so that I can just roll these things around to listen to different placement posiitons!
  9. Playing. I think with the foot removed it is shorter than than sitting on this table. I think I will get having all three midrange at the same level and stand it up. L and R will go up on stands. Have to make a new upright equipment rack. It sounds good, but a narrow focus. Time to get some Crites stuff. Then look for Surrounds and start building some room treatment. Paint the walls and someday get a real TV. lol
  10. Thanks WMcD, I think we were typing in perfect alignment. lol. I understand your thoughts now! 11. Ahhh, so a whole new cabinet, just move the components over to the new box. Duplicate the close arrangement (alignment) of three drivers, and move the passive to the side so that it can be closer to the wall? Box with the same volume, just shorter, much wider, and a little deeper! ( 3/4 MDF sound the same) Is that it? Saves the original box in case you want the original forte restored. Thanks
  12. Have I run the table on helpful ideas and advise? After listening to the new Fortes I am leaning away from the sacrilege of taking a saw to a matched pair of good sounding Fortes! I may be closing in on using them for the 5.1 surrounds and continue to shop for a Heresy or KLF-C7 as a shorter center.
  13. Thanks for the advise WMcD. I am a newby on this forum, although I bought my round terminal cup Forte new. You with 6500 posts must be like the Godfather of Klipsch forums!! lol I didn't understand what you told me however. Yes, the goal was to get a matching forte to try to use as a horizontal center in a 5.1 theater. My last thought ( from James, above posts) was to move the tweeter and midrange to an outbound box on top of the horizontal forte. When you say alignment, do you mean there would be a problem with the speakers timber to have the tweeter and midrange horns side by side instead of on top of each other? Front to back alignment can be fixed the same as current. I like the idea of not cutting the new Fortes up any more than I have to, but I was originally thinking of redoing the whole motor board. Can you give me another explanation of your idea? (in the dummies format) lol Thanks
  14. You got great prices! You must live in a hotbed of used heritage Klipsch. Are you near Hope or Indy? Minnesota here. Covered with a new blanket of snow this morning. The pair I bought closest to me were on Craigslist for 4 months. A jockey bought them at an estate sale and started listing them at 500. He has been coming down regularly. I bought them at 325. The other pair that came up the same day I had the appointment to go see the ones I bought, they started at 250 and only lasted on line 2 days. Seller told me the buyer felt like he got a steal. I had been doing the dreary search of Pawn shops, thrift stores and the like. Nothing but junk ever, and a depressing way to spend my time. One of the gals that owned a thrift store said my best bet was estate sales in ritzy areas of the city. She was right, the jockey found his there and I was more than happy to let him make some money so I could quit cruising the junk stores. I have been looking for 6 months. Last night was interesting A-B ing these new speakers against my original Fortes that I have upgraded through Crites. They both sounded good by themselves, but quite the difference also. Results in a different post when I have time. I now have figure out how to use as horizontal and then do the Crites upgrade and tighten the cabinet in that one!
  15. Brought new Oak Fortes home this week from Craig list add. Had to take both, maybe a blessing. I can just take the feet of one and dig the tweeter and midrange wires out from the back. Take the mid range and tweeter horns out of the other one and set them on top of the new horizontal center forte! I knew I would have to darken the color of the Oak, but didn't know they had different grill cloth??!! Almost theater, now I have to start the search for some surrounds. What do you know about KSP-S6? I see some of those around.
  16. Damn indecision, now I have two pair of Oak fortes to look at. The ones close to me for 350, or an 80 miles drive for 250. The 250 pair even look nicer and exact same vintage as mine. Round terminal cups listed at 4 ohms. Is a bird in hand (close) worth two in the bush?
  17. How about James' idea of pulling the horns out and mounting them outboard on top of the horizontal Forte? Thanks for your input.
  18. Just a note, I thought my Forte were sounding a little treble shy when I dug them out of storage from15 years ago. I ordered new crossovers and the titanium diaphragms to renew them. Put the crossovers in first and was really happy with the new sound I heard from them. Then I replaced the diaphragms and was really disappointed. I could not hear a difference. Was playing with a frequency sweep on You tube, when I discovered I can't hear a damn thing over 4K. Fortes cross over to the tweeter at 6K!! duh Damn to get old!
  19. Damn you Gary! Just kidding, but I thought I had my decision made. I know I would really like a good projection system, however to the down side, I just quickly googled AT screens. The first link that came up was Amazon and the screen was about $700. I was hoping for a mostly complete visual system for that. My only other issue is speaker placement. I currently (real tired of moving the Fortes around) have my speakers about 20' from back wall to back of speaker. That would mean I would have the AT screen about 36" out from the wall to hide the mismatched center speaker. I think I will continue with the LED idea for now. Maybe not push the size. Audio first (room treatment included), then a LED TV ( I like the idea of have one for daily viewing), then down the road as a third step a projection system in front of that TV. Thanks for your input.
  20. I have gone back and forth over projector or 1080P LED 60 to 75 inch many times. I do have to get one to complete this project. My wife does not like the projector idea. Some I have talked said you would spend more money getting a projector to look as good as a LED TV with a darbee. I am worrying about audio first as music will be my priority. But good idea and I would like the image being closer to the floor than what I will be able to do with a horizontal forte. I bought mine new in the early eighties. Put them away for about 15 years and just getting them back out. I like them.
  21. I'm kinda building a little HT set-up..... I've had a set of Fortés for a coulpe of years. A few months ago I found a KLF-C7 on CL for $150.... I couldn't pass it up...So far I like the sound it has....it's far better than the little speaker I was using. Seems to me it's good bit of work to turn a Forté into a center.....unless you got mad wood skills...I know I don't.... Also just a thought....if ya wanted to stay with-in that "heritage" line how about a Heresy?? Again just a thought..... MKP :-) I started months ago looking for Heresy, Academy and such. But both of these appears harder to find that the Forte themselves. The two Oak ones I can get for 350. I would have to add a new crossover and the midrange diaphragm. I don't mind a little work, just care about the integrity of the sound. Pretty silly for an old guy that can't hear anymore over 4K! Don't have to bother with the new diaphragm for the tweeter, can't hear it anyway.
  22. I like that idea, just build a new little box to house the tweeter and midrange side by side horizontally! A six inch high and twenty long box on top. That puts them up closer inline with the L and R midrange. Sounds better than moving the woofer. I like new thoughts. Thanks James
  23. For those of you much smarter than I and probably better hearing also, would a completely rearranged Forte motor board change the original timber? Looks cheaper and less work to find a KLF-C7 and be done. But if I can match the timber of original Forte, that is the what I want to do!
