Hi ya all, I understand from Al Klappenberger's posts that his ALK crossover presents a near constant 8 ohm impedence to the amplifier, but is anyone able to provide an impedence curve for the Type A crossover when fitted to the Khorns. I have both crossovers (as well as the original Type AA) and was interested in a comparison. Thanks, tim

I admit to start with that I have cloth ears, but I like my CP25s. Had them in for about a year, still resting on some books. Its not until I take them out and reconnect the K tweeter do I realise how much better they are. Are they louder--maybe that's part of what I like. I use the Type A crossover with Hovlands and no bass inductor.I say try em. thanks Al. tim

I have tried the Beymas bought mine from DIYparadiso for a very good price. I have them sitting on a couple of books ontop of my 1977 Khorns and use a type A crossover with Hovland and russkie teflon caps (no woofer inductor). I'm sure they are not as good as the more expensive JVC but I think they sound great, but then I admit that I have cloth ears. Thanks Al for the suggestion. tim

thanks Al, you are always very generous with your help. I had seen the picture of your home speakers but still wodnered about orientation. I'm assuming the baffle doesn't have to be large or have rounded edges and corners. I'm imagining an angular baffle that matches the Khorn or something more sculptured. I shall think about it awhile.

Hi All, my new Beyma CP24 tweeters have arrive so some questions if I may. What difference does it make if the baby cheeks are at the sides or at top and bottom? Can I remove the horn to tidy up the rough edge to the throat? I don't want to cut the top section of my Khorn so any suggestions for the size and shape of the CP25 surround? Is it important to recess the tweeter so that the face plate is flush with the surround?. Thanks to everyone,tim

After much wasting of time making my own copper connectors I assembled the Type A crossover for my 77 Khorn. For the 13uF cap I have paralleled a 6 uF Hovland with a 6.8uF Solen and a 0.1uF russkie teflon, and for the tweeter a 2.0uF Hovalnd with a 0.01 teflon. I am using the Universal Transformer Co autoformer and NO woofer inductor.Wired with Kimber and homemde connectors. Its hard to know the changes in sound 'cause I have gone from the ALK using 4 & X taps to using the 5 & 1 taps so the squawker is less attenuated. Certainly is great, a bit clearer than the ALK, but not such a step up from the old AA to Al's great ALK.(thanks again Al). The bass seems similar to me without the inductor but the different taps must be influencing that. Need a few more hours yet to get a final opinion but I'm happy so far. The Beyma CP25s are on their way for the next step up. Thanks to all who have given opinions. tim

Hi Ya All, further to Al's suggestion of the Beyma CP25. Is it a plug-in replacement for the T35 and compatible with the ALK, AA and A crossovers? Would it be ok to disconnect the T35 and place the new tweeter ontop of the Khorn cabinet? Does it need to be enclosed or would a simple baffle be OK? Has anyone tried any of the Fostex tweeters? Hi Ya All, I understand that there is no tweeter protection, but what amount of power is risky? I have a GTA SE40 amp with 40 watts into 8 ohms. Is this safe? I am going to parallel a 6uF Hoveland with a 6.8uF Solen but will set up the crossover so that I can substitute an oil cap for the Solen to compare. Tim.

DJK suggests using different T2A taps than those shown on the "classic" typeA schematic--I guess giving different attenuation, so would he be willing to comment on his reasons. Thanks. Tim

I have the typeA schematic from this forum. I plan to build it without the woofer inductor--which was going to be question two. When ya live on the other side of the world postage costs mount up so planned to go for "the best" ie Hovlands, straight off.Al K recommends them for the ALK crossover. But perhaps a mix of oil and Hovlands might combine two great effects. The teflons are cheap and can't hurt--in my opinion. Thanks all tim

I have built ALs ALK crossover (thankyou) but would like to try a type A. Would using all Hovland caps --2uf and 6+7uf-- be too much of a good thing? Any suggestions of combos with synergy? I plan to bypass each with Russkie teflons as well. thanks tim

Hi All, as a happy user of my ALK clones I wondered if any have taken advantage of being able to biwire the speakers, and their findings? Is it worthwhile? And has anyone tried Alan Wright-type-very-thin-silver-foil speaker cable? (0.05mm x 25.00mm) Here's hoping for lots of happy listeners. tim

I have finished my DIY ALK crossover clone 2 weeks now and want to offer a BIG thankyou to Al for his genius and generosity.I modified it a little by bypassing the caps with some russian teflons and mounted the caps on neoprene pads for some vibration isolation ( tho' the solder point are solidly attached to the board) and I mounted the whole crosover board on neoprene.Do my "extras" make a difference--who knows.Anyway after 2 weeks of steady use the sound is very clean/clear--almost as if something is missing --until I listen to the mush from my SS stereo (Denon).So I'm very happy.Thankyou again Al. tim PS I use a EAR 859 amp and Micromega stage 4 CD.

Thanks Guys, I read the Audio Express article but I'd like to do wood like the Yuici horns.I had found this site and its construction details but there are no dimensions.Any ideas without buying MJ magazine?And their freq. response is for ,say ,the A300 horn 600Hz to 20K Hz tho'the cutoff freq. is 300Hz.I understand that for Khorns they crossover is at 400Hz so will the K55V do that? In Sound Practices vol 2#2 issue 6 Joe ( we are not worthy) writes about his Lowther PM-6s in his 4" throat Edgar horns.Now I have 4 of those (tho' they are the stiff suspension/short whizzer "lesser" variety).What do ya reckon to that ? Following on from Al K and Tom B who advise changing the midrange horn rather than the driver,and the impossibilty of finding Altec or EV horns here in NZ,does anyone have experience of building their own horn, or who could direct me to the info.Building a new top section to the Khorn shouldn't be hard and combining that with a Beyma tweeter should be fun. First I must thank Al Klappenberger for his great generosity in making his ALK crossover available to the public. TBrennan reports "PWK told Bruce Edgar he thought the speakers (Khorns)sounded best with simple 1st order crossovers" and "ruce Edgar has fiddled with and modded Khorns and told me they sounded far better with 1st order networks". Soooooo....I was wondering if any others on the forum had compared the two .I aim to build the ALKs but the simplicity of the Type A network as posted by John Albright is atractive. I have 1977 Khorns with the Type AA crossover, model B K-BR-B,serials nos. 15T193 & 4. thanks tim

I hear some recommend replacing the stock klipschorn woofer with a JBL D130 (VTV article)--has anyone tried Tannoys?They are easier to find in NZ.Thanks.
