  1. At that price, not surprised it was quick...
  2. For commercially made vehicles you are best to check the manufacturer's website. You would think that, but no. Manufacturers tend to spec cargo in cubic feet, which is absolutely useless. That's what I found with several vehicles (non truck) I was considering renting, anyway...
  3. CAN$ 250 for Heresey's? If you're in Edmonton, you might want to take a look: http://www.canuckaudiomart.com/details/649280803-klipsch-heresy I have no affiliation - just a guy who gets alerts & passes on the ones too far afield.
  4. Hi Folks, I recently considered buying a single Klipschorn, and the fine members of this forum were very helpful about what I could / could not do with my wife's Honda Fit. As a service to others, I'm starting this thread to talk about cargo space and what it takes to haul some of the larger Klipsch speakers. Inquiring minds will want to know: Size of vehicle openings - trunks, hatches, doors, etc. (width x height of narrowest part) Cargo dimensions: width x length x height, free of any obstacles such as wheel wells Which Klipsch speakers will safely fit in said vehicle Tricks for angling stuff in for maximum hauling potential Where to rent / who on this board is crazy enough to help you in your local area
  5. What does everyone think about a separate post on vehicles and Klipsch Carrying Capacity (KCC)? You wouldn't believe how difficult it was to get cargo dimensions for a rental vehicle...
  6. Seattle area. If you live in Seattle and a pair of K Horns is out of your price range, look for a pair of used Speakerlab's made at their factory. They are high quality and made locally. You should be able to find a pair for a reasonable price. Thanks. There's a pair of Speakerlab Khorns nearby, actually, but I heard from someone local here that the crossovers on the Speakerlab K's aren't that good. At the asking price, by the time you buy crossovers you're getting closer to Klipschorns, but with far less resale value.
  7. Veneer that matches grain from the same batch is something Klipsch has always paid attention to detail to the point they had a guy at the factory who was an expert and would pick out the different veneers and match them to each other. I agree with you that Klipsch quality control is good enough and consistent enough I would be surprised if there were a sonic difference in similar model years or maybe even within the vintage era the speaker came from. Thanks - this helps see some additional value in matched sequential pairs, but that unmatched pairs would sound about the same if other aspects are equal.
  8. Lots of good points here - really appreciate the discussion this has generated. FWIW I'm running two mono amps, so my only concern is getting the left and right source to provide information to a single speaker if I want to play both mono and stereo recordings. Regarding sequential numbers - I get that this is desirable for resale. That said, if cabinets & components are the same in two Khorns of similar vintage, sonically there shouldn't be a difference. We're talking speakers, not amps, and Klipsch strikes me as pretty consistent in its components. Do let me know if I'm wrong about this, though.
  9. Unless you can find a great deal on a single that you can sell later (which can prove to be difficult) do not buy 1 K Horn if you really want two later on. Your chances of finding a matching single K Horn later on are almost zero. Buy some Cornwalls or Chorus speakers for now and move on when you have the funds. If the crossovers are the same and the vintages are similar, and the cabinets are more or less the same material, will they sound similar? I'm less concerned about matching grill cloth or how they were stained....
  10. That's interesting. Today I went to audition a single La Scala. Bass lines in the music were yummy, vocals were excellent; and yet percussion wasn't crisp and there was something missing in the midrange. The seller felt that playing only one channel and the lack of second speaker meant I wasn't hearing what La Scalas were truly capable of. He felt the imaging of two La Scalas would be way more detailed, hence my question. I'm not sure I agree with the seller's take, though...Maybe this particular La Scala wasn't the best example?
  11. Yeah, Sammy pretty much nailed it. I'm such a cheap arse on my own and Mustang Guy really guided me into not cheaping my way into stupid. His decisions (the ones I posted) made the trip easy, safe and efficient. Had I cheaped out the way I wanted to transporting my Khorns I would have thrown them onto my 5x8 utility trailer when they would have been ruined on the 2-hour trip home. They would have bounced up and down on my trailer and you know how rough those metal grates are, it's like a wood rasp. They would have had to weather a driving rainstorm with dirt and water kicking up from below. It would have been a disaster. Makes me really wish I lived near Mustang Guy.
  12. LaScalas are about 24x24x35 each, and 125lbs each. I have a 2007 Subaru Forester, with about 36 inches or so between the two wheel wells. Two LS fit in the back with the rear seat folded down. I placed some inexpensive particle board down first, from the rear hatch door to the back of the front seats, to cover the hinges and stuff from folding down the seats. An old wool blanket on to of that and they slid right in. Two people can easily lift a LaScala. A bit harder for a single person to do it. I also carried a pair in the back of my '98 Blazer, same deal. Pic below: Bruce If you're offering your car as pick up vehicle, I'd gladly accept ; ) Seriously though, I'm heartened to see two La Scalas fitting a Forrester. Sounds like the right SUV could take a Khorn face down?
  13. I'm considering easing my way into Khorns one at a time, partly due to budget, partly due to space. Given the size of the cabiet, horns, and drivers, you'd think one of these would offer more range and depth than two conventional box speakers, right? So if I bi-wire two Channels into a single Klipschorn cabinet, how good wil that sound, and how much am I losing sonically compared to having two Klipschorns imaging together? If 2-channel out of a single Khorn is a bust, what about a mono amp with mono recordings?
  14. I did the 19.95 Uhaul pickup truck rental when i needed to move a pair of KP450's to a warehouse for shipping. The 19.95 is the daily charge plus mileage. They charged me .59 per mile x 37 miles. Not bad for short trips but could get expensive on long ones. Cost per mile can add up fast - my trip is at least twice on a good day.
  15. Yikes. That will not be me, I can't even stand the sight of Ikea stuff getting gouged.
  16. This is why source is so important - depending on the music they could be a force for good or weapons of mass destruction.
  17. Sounds pretty clear about the L & R sides. If I had a wider cargo area, would you say the same about transporting face down or face up - still use a van? Would a La Scala be any different?
  18. A 5x8 trailer would be ideal if I had a vehicle what would tow one. No one I know has a truck or van, so looks like I will have to rent. I saw your post btw about you & Mustang Guy grabbing the Khorns - congrats on your purchase!!
  19. I've never owned one of these, but I would think that by definition a single Klipschorn by definition would require two people to load - no matter if onto a van, step van, pickup truck, hatchback, etc. Even a dock worker using a hand truck and a ramp to load onto a commercial truck would probably be want want a hand with an unboxed unit.
  20. Won't fit on its face or back in a Honda Fit. The trunk width is only about 30"; the Khorn bass bin is too wide. I'm not opposed renting a car or van....
  21. Small car, big ambitions - classic Klipschorns measure about 51"H x 32"W x 28.5"D. They're too wide to load into my wife's Honda Fit and lay face down.... So - would it harm a Klipschorn to be laid on its side for transport? I'm looking at a 4-hour drive this way, so it wouldn't work let me know asap!
  22. I'm local and might be interested. Will PM.
