  1. Good to know. Will still have to think about room placement with those passive radiators on the rear...
  2. Gorgeous color scheme! My wife is currently vetoing La Scala's (esp. plain birch) but I'd have a shot of getting those into the house. Congrats!!
  3. Guilty as charged, Tom! I can't wait to get my re-coned Cornwalls back from the shop so I can finalize the HT and finally get something for the 2-channel rig. I'm pretty insufferable at the moment... : )
  4. I grew up in the DC area and remember Root Boy Slim fondly from the old WHFS. Loved Xmas at Kmart and it's a shame more people don't know that song. So glad you had a great time at the show. But you didn't mention how it went with the Rootettes?
  5. Very interesting. How much cleaning have you done with your vinyl copy of Blue - would a deeper cleaning make a difference? And how do you unmaster a CD - are you using software or a mixing board? I'm intrigued.
  6. OK, so looks like Forte II's are clear winners over Quartets. Good to know! How far from the walls do you need to place Forte II's? How would they do in home theater, either as mains or as surround speakers?
  7. Let me know when you're getting ready to sell your Forte II's. I have family in the Midwest who might be able to pick up...
  8. Thanks for sharing & great story. I bet it's that much more satisfying to have them because of your travel experience in going to get them.
  9. Which would you choose for 2-channel if you had a choice between Forte II's and Quartets? What's a good price for each?
  10. Has anyone done a plywood comparison between Klipsch's stock Georgia-Pacific furniture/cabinet 7-ply and other brands?
  11. Don't drool too much - I'm local and contacted the seller a couple weeks ago. There's a fair bit of water damage to the MDF for both the RF-7's and the sub. I'd look into repairing them, but the price should reflect both the need for repairs as well as the reduced value of the speakers once repaired vs. those in excellent original condition.
  12. Tim, I'd definitely be interested in learning more, since we've watched these fine movies oodles of times over the years. Here are some of the things we've noticed, comparing all three extended versions on DVD and the Blu Ray for Two Towers Extended-- The LFE on the DVD seems to be much more resonant, with quite a low-end growl/rumble - e.g. Cave Troll stomping around in Fellowship. Makes me think of a V-8 muscle car. Organic sounds (or at least those engineered to emulate organic sounds) such as wind, water, fire, trees, sound effects involving wood, wings flapping, swords striking shields all seem more detailed and resonant on the DVD than the Blu-Ray Dialogue seem to sounds a little louder in the DVD mix; in the Blu Ray they sound muted, almost getting lost in the mix. To me Blu Ray dialogue seems a little washed out in comparison to what we hear on the DVDs. I'm relatively new to good sound, so I'd be interested in any insights as to why the differences. We had this in our old speakers (Ascend Acoustics CMT-340 mains & center, CBM-170 rear) but it's even more noticeable now that we're running Heresy HIPs for our mains & center (soon moving to Cornwall mains, HIP center & rear.) Also curious whether you think moving to 7.1 would make a significant difference, and whether you'd add the additional two speakers to the front or rear of the system. Many thanks for joining in this thread, I can't wait to see what else you post here & elsewhere. --Scott O. P.S. - A very special thanks to you & your team for mixing the Wilhelm screams in various places. Sometimes they're clearly done as gags; others are artfully blended so you don't notice unless you know what to listen for. Kudos!!
  13. Tim, are you saying you're in the movie industry and that you work with sound? Would be very interested to hear more. To be clear, I''m not trying to shake the house or anything, I just notice that with some movies I have on DVD the sounds sounds fuller than on Blu Ray. On Lord of the Rings, the dialog is quieter and less distinct in the mix. Stuff like that, which seems to dampen the sound rather than enliven it. This is happening with the same title, same AV setup, different video format... and possibly different mixing? I'd just like to get to the bottom of it since right now I'm getting the impression the sound mix on some (not all Blu Rays) is disappointing compared to the DVD I originally bought.
  14. Sorry, are you saying DVD is typically compressed or vice-versa? Would it make a difference if I had a 7.1 instead of a 5.1 speaker set-up?
  15. I searched for DVD vs. Blu Ray and all I got was the standard party line about how Blu Ray is better for everything. Is there something I'm missing?
  16. Theoretically movies *should* sound better on Blu Ray than on DVD, but have you ever found the reverse to be true? We watched the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy over the weekend to test out the Heresy HIP mains + center channel. So many scenes now pack a wallop it's unbelievable. That said, the voice tracks, organic sound effects and even some of the LFE's seem to sound more natural with more fullness, on DVD than on Blu Ray. Is it possible that Blu Ray tracks are more compressed? FWIW, our setup is: Yamaha RX-A3000 (HDMI) Oppo BDP-93 (HDMI) Panasonic VT-50 plasma (HDMI) Klipsch Heresy HIP 1 (left, right & center) KG 3.5 (rear surrounds) Hsu Research VTF-3 Mk IV sub Just curious if anyone else has noticed this. Thanks!
  17. That will happen when you have forums for gear hounds. I think there's room for discussing both - whether a movie has good LFE or not, and whether the movie is even worth watching. Case in point: derrickdj1's link to movies with good LFE content http://data-bass.ipbhost.com/index.php?/topic/12-the-low-frequency-content-thread-films-games-music-etc/ gives a super-high rating to Jupiter Ascending, which we found utterly dreadful and we're huge sci-fi fans.
  18. I think if we gave this a try and folks could see some actual examples it might make more sense. I'll try starting one and see where it goes. If it sucks, it sucks; if not, maybe there's something there.
  19. So are you using a free version or paying for a premium offering? Which paid version would you recommend and how much does it cost? I'm happy enough with our current HT setup but expect to be making some changes. The 2-channel rig is a work in progress, so it might be worth it to get the most out of whatever new equipment is purchased.
  20. While there is some subjectivity to which speakers, having folks weigh in on which soundtracks are better mixed than others does have objective elements. Some soundtracks have competing elements cancelling each other out in the same channel, others are well-mixed. Same goes for DVD vs. Blu-Ray - some Blu-Ray films use too much compression in an attempt to quiet the mix, with the result that the life gets drained out of it. There are always subjective elements when it comes to source material and how gear is set up, no doubt. But what's the purpose of a forum like this - to tweak gear or enjoy movies (and music)? Plenty of places here for tweaking gear, but it would be nice to see some space devoted to seeking and reviewing source material, how various sources impact our equipment choices & how our equipment favors some source material over others.
  21. I've searched a couple of times, but can't find a thread for reviewing movies in the Home Theater forum. Would it be an idea to have a sub-forum for reviews? It would be nice to know what's mixed well for Blu-Ray, DVD (sometimes DVDs are better), whether 7.1 would make a difference (e.g. Jurassic World sounds too busy in 5.1 Blu-Ray), etc. Also, which speakers bring out the best of movie soundtracks - Heritage, Reference, etc. There could be one thread per movie, with various takes on what works / doesn't work with certain systems, so you can track which directors, genres, etc. will sound best given the type of setup each of us has. Thoughts?
  22. Kung-Fu Panda. Sorry, we needed something light. FWIW, Despicable Me has a way better sound mix, though...
  23. Is it really worth getting Audyssey to measure this stuff? Just curious whether it's a cut above the programming in a decent AVR (like mine).
  24. LOL! Somebody's gotta check these out, now...
