  1. They're in great shape - very nice!
  2. Yes! That makes perfect sense. As it turns out, I picked up a pair of cheap Cornies the same week which will take over HT main duties once they've been re-coned. I really like the fact that the HIPs and Cornwalls are both three-way designs, and both have cone woofers and horn mids & tweeters. I cannot wait to get them in line and report back!
  3. I don't know what low end performance I'm giving up with these. If the HIPs have less bass than the Heresies, I really don't see why anyone in their right mind would complain about the bass these little speakers are capable of!!
  4. So you think these are based on the Heresy 2? Even though they're HIP 1?
  5. I agree, there does seem to be a lot of complaining about lack of bass from certain speakers, esp. Heritage. In my limited time here it appears to me Cornwall, Heresy, and Belle get the most knocks. My take might be different, because I started out in audio using budget bookshelf speakers which had no hope of reaching deep bass. I was so grateful when I finally pulled the trigger and bought a Hsu Research VTF-3 Mk IV for out home theater! Let me tell you, when that sucker got properly dialed in everything came to life, including the Ascend Acoustic mini-towers I'd upgraded to from the bookshelf models. Recently I snagged a heckuva deal on three Heresy HIP 1's, which are now sitting in my home theater as left & right mains + center channel, KG 3.5's doing rear surround duty, all supported on the bottom end by the Hsu Research sub. Wow is all I can say. Movies like "Saving Private Ryan" are astounding. Granted I have a killer sub and the magnets on the Heresy HIP woofers are supposedly larger than standard Heresies, but I loved hearing the bass and clear mids and highs in the HIPs when I first tested them in my 2-channel rig. So is it a failing of Klipsch Heritage line if sound is improved by adding a sub for handling the lower registers? I don't see how. Some folks think bass should be boomy-rumbly-shaky, but to me that's in pursuit of something completely different. Net-net, think about your application (home theater vs. 2-channel), your source material (analog vs. digital, natural sounds vs. sound effects) and take your ears out to multiple auditions. Things will fall into place, in a way that no one's opinions can do nearly as well for you.
  6. I thought LaScala's in HT are often placed front facing with minimal toe-in. But is that because subs are doing more of the low-end work?
  7. They do kick butt. Way more detail and musicality than I would have expected.
  8. Mini Corns? Are these specs that much different from standard Heresies?
  9. I've been meaning to open one up, and your post gave me the nudge I'd been waiting for. Here's what I found: woofer is K-42E, mid is K-55M, tweet is K-77, and crossover network is type HIE. I think this is a much larger magnet than on a typical Heresy, so that may explain why I have no complaints as to bass. I do run a Hsu Research VTF-3 Mk IV sub, so that probably doesn't hurt either. I believe the porting is on the bottom for these HIPs, based on the plywood platform under the woofer. Can't pull the front grills easily due to trim wood pieces nailed to the cabinet edges... We continue to be impressed with the performance of the HIPs, currently serving as mains + center in my home theater. We recently watched "Saving Private Ryan" on DVD and the tank scenes were jaw-dropping. Incredible sound as well from "Despicable Me" on Blu-Ray - detailed, musical, full-figured tonality. Simply wonderful.
  10. KP-320 cabinets but does not look like the original horns. Thoughts? http://houston.craigslist.org/hsh/5698735217.html
  11. Thanks, Tom. Between the Cornwalls and the Heresy trio, I should have a well-mated setup for home theater. I really like the fact that the Cornwalls and Heresies are three-way, each two horns and a woofer. As it is I'm digging the three Heresies as mains and center channel there. But now what to do about my 2-channel rig?? At the moment, it's just a pair of KG 3.5's to go with my Odyssey monoblocks.

    Ouch!!!

Looks like they all got kicked in. Wonder how that happened...
  14. I know, right? Water damage usually means mold and that's why I started getting cold feet too. I shared some high-res pics with the speaker tech and he basically said he'd buy them from me as-is with no questions. Turned out there really wasn't water damage per se, just some marring from water on the surface of the veneer that can be brought back. There was also a patch of over-eager sanding on the other cabinet, but they should turn out OK. I should have confirmation this week and will update this thread if anything further is needed. The Heresy cabs will need more work than the Cornwalls. I want to remove the ugly stain job, there's some damage to the 7-ply edges on the two long side panels, and when I take out those eyelets the holes they made will also need some attention. What material do folks generally use when patching the natural cabinets?
  15. Thanks for the thoughts. Just hooked up the Heresies and KG 3.5's last night for a test run and was pretty impressed. Of course that was mostly from the Heresies up front. I thought I'd lost the Cornwalls I saw this week, but the first buyer flaked and I picked them up yesterday. $250 for Walnut Oiled finish (needs some restoration), both woofers in need of re-coning. That will cost another $200 but the work will be done by a Klipsch specialist locally who will order OEM parts and do the work right. I cannot wait to get them in a couple of weeks! Darned fine shopping, huh?
  16. I should post a pic of the rears, because it's sealed so makes me wonder where the porting is occurring on these - perhaps the front? I've never seen HIP's in 7-ply either for that matter, except for these three.
  17. I hooked up the three Heresies to my home theater and have to concur on the Heresy as a center channel. Simply incredible! They also make surprisingly good mains, and that's without slant risers to target our ears. Very happy indeed.
  18. Tom, I will let you know if I see any good mono gear. Actually I just thought of someone and will PM you his phone.
  19. Banner week for me. Monday scored three Heresy HIP units for $120, 7-ply cabinets in rather rough shape and large security eyelets which served as anti-theft in a small college library. Ended Friday with a pair of Cornwalls in oiled walnut finish with blown woofers for $250. Dropped the latter off to a local Klipsch tech to be re-coned, after that they'll need some elbow grease to restore the finish on the cabinets. That said, I expect to have a killer 5.1 setup for about one-third the going used prices. Score!!!
  20. How are you putting the Heresies at ear level? I have some heavy-duty speaker stands for musicians (approx. 30"-36" high) but the Heresies seem too unstable on them. Would like to know... Funny you should mention Cornwalls. I noticed a $250 pair with rough cabinets in need of re-coned woofers, but someone got there ahead of me. No complaints, I'm enjoying some cool jazz on the Heresies as I work...
  21. Thanks, Tom. Have you sold your single Khorn?
  22. He still hasn't sold it? I was going to buy it but thought too much hassle and not ready yet with the rest of the mono setup.
  23. Thanks so much for posting this!
