I've not heard any of the Focal models, they do get great reviews.

The Focal Bathys sound stunning and at under $1,000 are quite the bargain.

I have a friend in town who drives his ProAcs with a Primaluna. Pretty sweet.

I have had my EVO 400 for about 3 years now and have rolled kt150s in and rolled in some preamp tubes and I love the sound of my system more now than ever. I don’t think I will ever go back to solid state amplification.

  3. I owned  a McIntosh MA 252 and it sounded very good. I auditioned a Primaluna  Evo 400 and preferred the sound over the MA 253 so I traded it in for the evo. I am very happy I moved to the all tube integrated amplifier as I love the sound with my Forte IVs

  4. I have the bathys and love them. The noise canceling works amazing I flew to Nashville and back to Cali last week and rocked out on the bathys both ways and only heard the plane when we landed. Those Focal cans sound wonderful.

  5. Way back in 1986 my dad told me he wanted a new stereo for his penthouse beach house. We went to the closest high end audio store, Genesis Audio and listened to a full lineup of Heritage speakers. I can’t remember how he chose the Forte 1s at the time but they were far and away his favorite. Genesis was a very high end store and had mostly exotic amps etc. my dad wanted a simple receiver so I gave him my Sony and bought an NAD full separate system for my listening room. I had Cerwin Vega 380 SE at the time and loved them. When I got the fortes setup at dad’s house we played a Linda ronstadt disk which sounded incredible. I came home and played the same cd on my system. The Cerwin Vegas were no match to those Fortes.

when my dads wife got home she had a sh#@#@t fit. lol she hated them but my dad listened to them every day the rest of his life. They passed to me when he died and are now my surrounds in my living room to go along with my Forte IV mains. I love the Klipsch sound signature.

    It's more like this

Baking in the sun , fosters , smoking mother nature,  and listening to the beach boys

One of the best beach Boys albums ever.

  7. I use my sub for music and ht. I don’t always analyze everything about my stereo components. I  am usually drawn to whatever sounds best to my ears, only.  The HSU sub I had provided great deep bass and sounded good with HT but the REL blends better with my Forte IVs then my HSU ever did when listening to music. Maybe the REL hype is just that but… the REL sub disappears and you only hear the Fortes with that deep lower register no t present without the sub.

I must of got a bad one, nothing is perfect humans made it…even though it was a rough road with the Primaluna where I am now is 100% better. The Pass gear is so much better…no regrets…I have had a lot of tube amps in the past year..I found a Decware in a garage sale on my daily walk for 200$, a Dennis Had from the used market, they were ok …I am definitely done with tubes…sold them…

Glad you got your pass labs setup and love it. Congrats

Could of been a funky tube making it hiss…I know my Primaluna I had made lots of weird noises all the time, speaker thump when shutting it off and a click when turning it on..after about 4 hours I had a noise like bending metal that would come randomly and scare the hell out of me..then after I shut it off and it cooled down it did it again…crazy..

‘Hiss or not the Carver sounded really good…when I took the Primaluna preamp out and put in the Pass Preamp I can’t believe the difference…when I turn the Pass off and on there is no sounds…actually I have only turned it off a couple times in the last 4 weeks…the preamp, stays on 24/7…I turn the display off …the remote is so nice ….

All that is water under the bridge, all the Primaluna stuff is gone and all the tubes..

‘bottom line what I have learned recently is if you can keep amp and preamp and all the same manufacturer…it makes a huge difference…

‘With the Primaluna I couldn’t listen to bad recordings, now I can for example the Audioslave recording of the song Like A Stone is awesome….

I am so glad my Primaluna doesn’t have the problems you experienced and still surprised Upscale didn’t make it right. My Evo400 has not made turn on or off thumps or any hiss or noise.your experience with your Evo 400 sounds terrible. Just clean powerful sound. Warm and rich sounding day in day out.

  10. Its so interesting how many people on this Forum think that only horn loaded subs sound good. My HSU DR sub sounded good but the REL S812 sounds MUCH better to my ears. PLENTY of fast clean and deep bass that blends perfectly with my Forte IVs. Interesting how many people that have never heard a high level connected REL Sub assume that all DR subs suck!!!! LOL

yeah... the old 'high level' recommendation.

seems like most stick to that like the gospel.

that newest 'setting up an array' video John put out is a little... embarrassing. But I understand they are trying to sell product.

I can't speak for others but the difference between my HSU setup and my REL high level setup made my sub disappear - you dont hear it but every frequency sounds more clear and blends very well. So BS or not high level with my Forte IVs is a big improvement over my previous setup.

All that matters is that you enjoy it... that's the bottom line.

Much of what folks seem to think is better is merely a tad bit more 'full' dynamic range... I don't think adding a direct radiating distortion maker can really add more clarity or transient response.

I enjoy the sound of my system much more with the REL sub than my older HSU sub. The high level input on the REL integrates the sub seamlessly with my Fortes so I find the difference better to my ears  very enjoyable.

2 (or more) subs is not about more capability for music, it's about better.

With Fortes it's like you have 3. 🙂

Not every room can accommodate multiple subs and large Heritage speakers. If I had more space I’d have La Scalas or Cornwalls and a line array of REL 812s

  14. I used to use an HSU 15=inch sub in my main listening room and it pumped out a lot of deep bass. Good for music and video. I got a great deal on a REL S812 and it is wired directly to the speaker outputs of my integrated amp. The bass coming out of the S812 sub is much faster than the bass from the HSU and disappears with my Forte IVs. The REL S812 Made a fantastic sound improvement in my setup from top to bottom. It’s not just more fast sub bass but the mids are also much more blended. I have no space for two subs but my room is very well pressurized with the single S814 REL

  15. I have Forte IVs as my mains and a REL S812 Sub in my 14" x18" living room and they easily pressurize my room. The IVs have much more energy in the lower mid bass than my previous Forte 1s do. I would have bought Cornwalls or La Scalas if I had the room but the Forte IVs fit perfectly and are very WAF approved. They scale well in our space and to me thats important.
