Hooking Pro Media 4.1's to other sources

Hmmm no good I can get only get 1 or 2 of the speakers to work but not all 4. I hope my speakers didn't get fried when my PC died. -
Okay my computer had met an untimely death with a water cooling accident. Since I'll be without my PC for a while I was wondering if I can hook up my 4.1 setup to my DVD player. My DVD player has the standard Left and Right audio out as well as hook ups for a complete 5.1 setup. How would I go about hooking up my speakers? Do I get a 1/8" to RCA adapter and hook it up to the standard audio outs or would I get a Y cable and hook it up to the 5.1 speaker jacks. My DVD does have a small AMP it doesn't put out a whole lot of power. Any input is appreciated and I'll give more info if needed.
