  1. Indeed it is! Total beast. I would like to keep it, but I never use it and I need the money more!
  2. SOLD —- Sounds GREAT with big Klipsch - and most anything else. Have kept this unit as a "backup" for a long time, but it is WAY too nice for that. Don't use it since switching to separates. Nice condition w/box, remote, etc. $1090 plus actual shipping from 60564.
  3. Selling my Cary SLP-03 tube preamp. Has recently-added new tubes (Gold Lions) and was recently serviced at a cost of $350 to correct a hum in one channel. Currently holds a warranty from the shop through late January, which will transfer to the new owner. Comes with original packaging, original remote, etc. Some light scratches, but overall fine condition. The volume down button on the remote is sometimes a little slow, so I bought a new Cary-branded remote as a backup for the new owner (cost me $50), which will also be included. Price: $990 plus actual shipping & insurance from zip 60564.
  4. Howdy all! My boys have gotten to the age of breaking things...so I need to put the grills on my Cornscalas. I have the fabric: https://critesspeakers.com/speaker_fabric.html ... Now the job must be done. Is there anyone in the Chicago area who can do this for me? My zip is 60564, west burbs. Can I easily do it myself? I seem to recall that there was an art to it without sagging. Also, any ideas, points, or process tips I should know about how to attach the grills to the speaker - velcro, magnets, etc.? I am looking for the "easy button"! Thank you!
  5. Hello all. Due to my room layout and other logistical concerns, I likely need about 20' interconnects (single ended) between my preamp and my amps. I know there can be negative impacts on the sound with interconnect runs this length...what cables would you recommend? In the past, I have used BJC subwoofer interconnects. Is there a better (but also affordable) option? Is there some other solution I am missing? Also, for reasons of avoiding ground loop hum, I need equally long (~20') power cables for my amps to plug into the same power conditioner the rest of my gear is plugged into...any suggestions there? I presume shielding would be important, what else? Thank you for the help!
  6. It has been recommended a few times over the years on some of the audio forums but hasn’t been formally reviewed that I’ve seen. Some of the reviews on the maker’s website clinched it for me. The gent that makes them has a power amp that was well reviewed in Stereophile, compared favorably to Pass Labs and PrimaLuna (it was in the “B” class for Stereophile’s recommended components this year). The preamp looks to be the best value out there, if you want all the old fashioned controls in a new unit without spending several times the price. Perhaps the buzz starts here?
  7. Ended up getting one of these: https://www.akitika.com/PR102.html
  8. My main music amps are VRD monoblocks. I also use a McIntosh MC2105. But, in the spirit of convenience and room layout I am going to try out a cheap pair of chip amps (TPA3255 mono amps) in its place to compare the sound.
  9. Sound quality is important, of course.
  10. Required: a remote Important: multiple outs Nice to haves: tape loop, tone control, phono stage, mono button Max $600. This is meant to be my backup unit. Will consider something more expensive if it is really special; my main preamp is broken right now anyway, so I might just have it fixed and sell it if I prefer the replacement! Thank you! --- EDIT: FOUND ONE. THANKS FOR THE HELP!
  11. My first tube amp, really opened my mind to what the “tube sound” is, absolutely adore the holograph effect. Rolled in NOS Soviet 6P1s and Western Electric 403bs, which were a substantial improvement on the stock tubes. Will also include an additional EIGHT (8) NOS Soviet 6P1s and additional pair (2) of the NOS Western Electric 403bs that I will include with the amp. So, you are basically getting an amp and a bunch of tubes for the price of the tubes. I may also have the original tubes around if you want them. $99 plus actual packing/shipping from 60564.
  12. These are 4.5s, not 2.5s!! This was my first pair of speakers many moons ago….cabinets are a little beat. Also, one of the back panels started rattling at one point (common with these), so I re-glued the back panel and put in a couple screws, which fixed it. I imagine that a little bit of paint or shoe polish would spruce up the cabinets…or you could strip them and start again. Add in some Crites upgrades…and now you are talking. Not worth the effort to me, I have too many speakers. They work fine. Pickup only, I am in Naperville, zip 60564.
  13. https://www.ebay.com/itm/174490626722 I am looking for small (but good sounding) monoblocks to serve as my "movie" amps on my shared movie/music stereo system when I don't want to use my tube power amps. Monoblocks are much easier to fit in my room with its current layout, and chip amps seemed like a logical fit for small size, sound quality, and low cost...these say "subwoofer" but have a full range switch on them. Has anyone tried these or something similar? My main speakers are two-way Cornscalas. Thank you!
  14. Howdy all. I have some nice tube monos (VRD monoblocks), but know very little about tube amps. My kid knocked one of the 12AU7s / CV4003s out of my VRDs and wrecked it (bent pins, frosty top, gas seal must be busted). I do have some 12AU7s around I could swap in. QUESTION: In reading the info on the NOSValves website (https://www.nosvalves.com/vrd.htm) it appears that the broken tube is a “phase splitter.” Can I just swap a new pair of 12AU7s to the appropriate position on each amp or do I need to bias them? Thank you!
  15. Howdy, all. Putting feelers out to see if anyone is selling NOS Valves VRD monoblocks ... message me if you have a pair to sell! Thank you!
  16. Thank you for pointing this out! I would put the price of those units in the category of “delusional.” 😀
  17. Please message me if you have one to sell...thank you!
  18. Can’t get ahold of @jimjimbo ... anyone else got one of these?
  19. Howdy all! I am having trouble finding the preamp I want (a Mcintosh C2500 or C2300, message me if you want to sell one!!), but I still have an upgrade itch to scratch. What do you suggest? The problems I’d like to solve eventually - 1) Hum. I occasionally have low-level hum (especially when I roll tube amps in) and it drives me crazy. Is there a gear-related fix for this like a new power conditioner? 2) The sound overall can sometime be a little brash. I sit pretty close to the speakers (9’ or so) so I am sure that doesn’t help. 3) Low bass is underwhelming (I am almost certain this is the room and will try to rearrange, also try to sit further back) 4) Imaging is OK, not pinpoint (I had some smaller multidriver speakers a few years ago and the imaging was much better for sure) - I really like the sensation of being able to tell where an instrument is placed - and that it has a consistent size... Here is my current system - •Crites Cornscala Type D’s (the two way) •5’ Acer Silverworm for speaker cable (link, not audiophile cable, was hoping the silver plating and short length would help offset the amp’s low damping factor) •McIntosh MC2105 for power amp •13’ Blue Jeans Cable “subwoofer” interconnects •Cary SLP 03 preamp, currently with vintage Sylvania 12AU7s that might be a touch microphonic •Various inexpensive interconnects to sources (monoprice, Etc) •Turntable is a Lenco L75 on a giant plinth with a Jelco 850L tonearm •Phono Cartridge is a Nagaoka MP110 •Phono preamp is an Aragon 47K MM/MC •DAC is a Rega DAC-R •CD transport/SACD player is an old Pioneer DV-79AVI •Power Conditioner is a Furman PL-8C (an inexpensive model) •Record cleaner is a Record Doctor that I never use because it’s too bloody loud and manual! What I really want is a new preamp, but now I am thinking of upgrading the speaker cables, the power conditioner (if that might help with hum?), getting a new record cleaner that I’ll actually use (one of those sonic ones that can do batches of records?), some new preamp tubes, or some interconnects...was also toying with the idea of a new or secondary tube power amp or maybe a Schitt Aegir...what do you think? Thank you!
