  1. Hi there thebes...thanks so much for the education as I read up you are 100% correct. I am certain we are dealing with old oil base paint on the speakers. I assume my painter is using latex/acrylic in which case we will go with option #1. I suppose there is an outside chance he will use oil base on some of the trim/cabinetry in which case we will go with option #2. Again, I appreciate your input and I will treat these little gems with respect!
  2. Really!!!! I would love to meet him as well....maybe at the 2018 Pilgrimage which I plan to attend. I wont be a newbie then! Would it be appropriate to ask Mr. Wyatt to add his John Hancock again with the then current date?
  3. I just used a DeWalt rotary palm sander with both 150 and 80 grit sandpaper. I worked one bottom side pretty aggressively and got through the paint to raw birch but unfortunately this is not something I would want to do all over. However, the sanding beautifully prepared all the surfaces for painting. So, I plan to have the professional painter who is painting our new home spray paint the Heresys in Sherwin Williams "Mindful Gray" to match the walls where the speakers will be. They are all taped up and ready to go!
  4. Well I just tried stripping the paint using Goof Off brand stripper. Followed the instructions and tested the entire bottom and one side. Absolutely no paint came off....all it did was lighten the color slightly as if had been bleached. Bummer. I suppose many cycles might have some effect but I don't think even this would produce clean unfinished wood. I guess the 30+ year old high quality paint on raw birch is just not going to come off chemically. So, I will try some sanding to see what this does.
  5. Had not thought about paint stripper so I appreciate the advice. I figure this is high quality paint put on raw wood some 30+ years ago. Does that make any difference in the process you recommended? Do yall think there is much of a chance of cleaning these up enough for staining or ploy??? That is my real preference.
  6. Yep...the 1985 air from Hope,AR smelled clean!
  7. This week I purchased a pair of 1985 Heresy HBR from my brother-in-law. He bought them new, never moved them and used them rarely......these things are a time capsule. I took the back off, no doubt the first time since they were installed at the factory, and looked around...not even dusty. Now he had them painted an off white which I might change. Plan to sand to see if they will clean up for staining but will have them professionally repainted if not. The cane grills are immaculate! I hope to keep them as long as he did.
  8. I already have a THTLP with a 15" driver under construction...otherwise would have been very interested in one of yours! Never heard one in action but looking forward to it.
  9. I am cleaning house and can bring a few things things...especially if anyone shows interest beforehand. 1) Mission 700 speakers (5) 2) Great White Whale Point 3 System speakers 3) Knight KG 765 tuner 4) Yamaha YST-SW50 subwoofer 5) Pioneer SA 7500 integrated amp (one bad channel) Thanks....Wm
  10. Just noticed a pair of empty Heresy Decorator cabinets for sale on Craigslist ( Springfield, MO). Priced at $35 which seems like a bargain....just too far away for me. No affiliation to this offering.
  11. OK.....I now read where two center channels is not advisable and I appreciate your leading me in this direction. So, what should I do with the Heresys? I am not a trendy type guy but I suppose a 7.1 system is a possibility with the Heresys on the sides. Maybe sell the KG4s and use the Heresys in the rear as a 5.1? Thoughts?????
  12. Another update....this stuff is fun! I have run across a pair of Heresy 1's for a good price. If this closes I would like to use them as dual center speakers in lieu of the KSF-C5. Does this plan work without stressing anything electronically? How should I wire them up? I will likely be powering all this with a pedestrian 5.1 avr.(have a surplus Denon and Pioneer to use) until I can get something better. Thanks for your advice.
  13. Great.....thanks so much for the information and links.
  14. Another question please. As I mentioned above, some speakers will be built in cabinetry behind some sort of cloth. Do you have any ideas about an acoustically transparent cloth which is inexpensive and will last without sagging. I have read elsewhere that spandex works well and it is cheap according to spandex websites. I will likely use a shade of grayor maybe black...
  15. Hello to all.....we are building a new home with a dedicated media room ( 20' x 14' x 10'). I have recently acquired a pair of Cornwalls (front), pair of KG4s ( rear) and a KS5-C5 (front center).... no subwoofer at present. The Cornwalls and KSF-C5 (and subwoofer if necessary) will be set inside in cabinetry behind matching grill cloth. I want to hang the KG4s to conserve floor space. Thinking of a wall platform, platform on chains hung from ceiling, hardware attached to speakers hung on chains from ceiling, etc. The optimum sound position will guide where and how they are placed. Any suggestions how to best configure this??? Is laying KG4s on their side advisable?? The passive woofer on the rear makes this placement confusing to me. PS: I have also recently bought a pair of 1993 LSI for my workshop.....they will definitely be hung from ceiling with hardware. Fun times!
  16. Ha Ha....those brackets are pretty ugly but they came to me like this. I figure they were installed to add extra support because the speakers were hung at a down sloping angle. Probably overkill so I will likely just remove them....maybe paint them when I respray the entire cabinet. Thank for the confirmation that the external brackets will work safely.
  17. Bingo.....it sure looks like this is it! The link you provided led me the Cargo Control who has several types of stud fittings. Those plus some chain or nylon strapping should do the trick. My workshop is new construction so I will have easy access to ceiling joists. Thanks so much Carbon_66..
  18. Well by golly...you are 100% correct. I got hung up on function and forgot share. Thanks for the greeting. Here are a few more photos. I have not cleaned them up but you can see the general configuration and the commercial grade brackets both inside and outside. Thanks...
  19. Yesterday I bought a pair of 1992 LaScala Industrials and I am pleased with them. They are the one cabinet, sealed back top half, pebbly black, rounded edge variety with all original components, However were once hung in a Little Rock, AR nightclub so they have some commercial grade bracketing on the sides and I wonder it this was special order from Klipsch. Attached is the bracket and I would like to find the matching other half. Ever seen anything like this???.
