  1. a friend tried this with his HeresyII and was stunned. he's sending it to me for test. it's cheap and works wonders. https://www.reckhorn.net/pages/speakers/h-100-corner-horn-subwoofer.php?lang=EN even 6 moons had to indulge ;-D http://www.6moons.com/audioreviews2/reckhorn/1.html
  2. thanks a lot chris ;-D starting reading
  3. hi ray and folks been a long time. summer tends to drive me away from listening sessions but now that fall seems to finally hit, i guess it's time to focus on home listening again. i didn't buy the k-Horns and chose to get the best out of the LS first. hence, the ported bass reflex bin seems like a good thing to try. if you can come up with pics that would be great or links to such buildings, as i couldn't find any specific links about it from the research option. thanks in advance
  4. nice vid but the reverb is totally awful. sounds like a hospital hall and don't do justice to the speakers - though we hear the potential ;-D the room deserves some acoustic treatment or just to be lived-in, shelves on walls, paintings, rugs, whatever.
  5. thanks guys for feedback. Ray, folded horn sub had been advised, bill fitzmaurice type. but from what he saw of my room, the french patented BF maker doesn't see any viable/ integrated solution... your bass reflex bins risers are an interesting option. they're just bins, right? no woofers added? a picture of the LS+bin set-up would be great. thanks Chris for the EQ back-up ;-) i know that they're on audiophiles little dirty secrets' list. "The notion that loudspeaker drivers and horns should automatically produce naturally flat response at the listener's eardrums is a anthropomorphic view that "audiophiles" have injected into an otherwise real physical world." this is a good one. could stand as a signature. i did read really good feedback on the Behringer DEQ2496 Ultra-Curve Pro. it's affordable and offer interesting results, especially thru digital playback, (i.e Full Digital Amplifier - an amplified PWM/DAC ) which is what i mainly use at home. it has the very talent of offering a good analog/digital conversion, too - ideal to connect a phono preamp. really, Colleen's set-up and the EQ option really makes me wondering about the KH again. and i have another very interesting contact about a pair. more to follow...
  6. hi the story continues with more food for thoughts, as the KH project is still nagging at me ;-) what do you guys think of this KH placement, as featured in the great record's collectors'Dust&Grooves book? it's the living/music room of Colleen "Cosmo" Murphy , DJ and promoter of Classic Album Sundays parties, friend of the late great David Mancuso from The Loft fame and die-hard fan of the KH. https://dustandgrooves.com/colleen/ as this placement is pretty similar to my virtual room arrangment - there would be actually even more space between the speakers - i contacted Colleen thru the grapevine and she vouched for the KH, even in such a "limited" space. another idea is to compensate room issues thru a behringer DQ analog/digital gizmo. EQ is usually regarded as sacrilege by audiopaths - but secretly favored to get the best of systems. keep on hornin'
  7. hi again. width is about 14 feet, that would leave about 6 feet between the KH, which seems very little. from what i've read and exchanged here and there, i will probably face similar issues i encountered with the altec 19, i.e the frustation of playing oversized speakers (for my room volume) at a very small fraction of their potential. i've been down that path and the La Scala happily cured these frustrating years. life is too short to let audio issues bothering the very simple pleasure of music. so i'll pass the satisfaction of "owning" KH this time and enjoy my LS. thanks everybody for support and advice.
  8. hi Gary this is exactly what i'm thinking. the opportunity woke up that ol' "what if" audio bug the La Scala had succeeded to cure. i must confess that the appeal of owning KH was very strong and almost conquered me, they are beautiful objects of audo desire. i'm afraid a special designed room will never host any of these marvelous speakers as our house is great but lacks this possibility. thanks everybody for your feedback and advice but i made up my mind about it. the La Scala stay ;-) i exchanged messages and pics of my room with the french builder of Fitzpatrick subs and he can' figure any real improvement possible in my room configuration, as any horn loaded would be much too big to place anywhere...
  9. hi Hsos and thanks for your feedback on this. the more i read and get feedback , the more it makes me reconsider the whole KH project. fact is, i really enjoy the La Scala the way they are - without a matching sub - and the very idea of owning KHorns as the ultimate/lifetime speaker opportunity, as enticing as it is - is actually more like a fantasy which somehow, goes against my prime intuition. i've already been experiencing the limits and frustration of oversized speakers in a smaller room. my listening at this friend's place, though very exciting and spectacular; just proved me right - and his room is bigger than mine!
  10. thanks for the data. yes i saw the table tuba, nice work. too bad i can't use one as a console to put my system on it
  11. thanks chris for your comments. as the picture shows, the KH will be placed in the actual corners of the room - where the LS stands right now. there's no alternative to that. i understand your point concerning the elevation of the wole mid/hicgh spectrum and possible outcome with wall/ceiling interactions but there's no issues right now with the LS, they sound abfab with no specific "lack" of bass - xcept on recordings where bass or mastering of bass is missing or bad. thats what i really enjoy about the LS, compared to previous altec 19 - where a certain amount of volume was needed to move that 15" and bass was either (too) loud or boomy or almost missing at lower volume. this issue is probably settled with LS' higher sensitivity or filter engineering. yesterday's experience of KH at my friends' is that they produce way much more bass resonnance than the LS - almost too much for my sake - hence reminded me of the rampant issue of oversized speakers in smaller rooms which never works for me, but sometimes to the sincere joy of the systems' owners. maybe this impression relied mainly on this particularly room, where many absorbers were installed on walls to treat resonance and echo issues and translated in boomy effect... the sub is an alternative i don't feel necessary with the LS. The KH will either work in my room, maybe with some adjustments - or not. i intend to build a wall library on this concrete rear wall for years now - so maybe the KH sound will be a great incentive for some immediate action ;-)
  12. well, you're totally entitled to think that from your own experience. then we probably have different perception of music and frequencies ;-) from what i heard yesterday at my friend's, i'm totally aware of the potential of the KH here at home vs. the possible issues due to room structure. what i liked and gives me hope is that even at lower sound level, the KH convey the whole spectrum with full bass weight and dynamics. but i know there will be an upper limit, as there is with any speaker in any given room. browsing the forum i've seen systems and similar room/placement that seem to make their owners very happy. some people enjoy cranking music at almost live volume level and achieve to find tonal balance or acceptable compromise in it, whereas others would run out of the room and cringe. what matters most is the level of pleasure we can reach and the KH seems to have incredible potential.
  13. yes look at the picture. the KH would be in these corners, where the LS stand right now. that would leave about 2 meters/6,5 feet between them ;-(
  14. feel free to send the info please ;-)
  15. i've been wondering about these table subs
  16. if there's too much bass and resonance because they're too close and the room not big enough, it will. maybe not worse - but not their best, whereas the LS sound so natural and easy
  17. from what i read here, it needs to match the bass wavelength of the LS, hence quite a piece of furniture Jason, your risers would look and sound fine here too ;-)
  18. Hi derrick ;-) the lower/louder bass makes it a very different experience. it's very welcome on some stuff and kinda noisy or disturbing on other tracks - but there's this global sensation that it's "always there" and can be addictive, for the best or worse. introducing a sub to match the LS would be the elephant in the room i'm afraid. i'd say the room is about 8 meters large, ceiling up to 2,50m, double living-room reaches 15 meters long. listening position is in between, with 2 sofas back to back, one facing the system, another facing armchairs, screen-windows, garden, etc...
  19. just when i was totally at peace and simply enjoying my La Scala, arises the opportunity to get 1981 Khorns and here's that damn bug again: what if the KH sound better ;-) as generally admitted here - than the LS? BUT most important, what if it sounds WORSE - in my environment... i'v been there before. i used to have Altec 19. I tried to make them play right and got frustrated for 2 years before i realized that fighting the basic laws of acoustics/volume/space and house structure is meaningless. no amp, cables, power plugs or snake oils can beat that. then, after some time, the la Scala found their way and cured my audiopath issues effortlessly. So today i visited a friend who has gorgeous sixties KH and a room pretty similar to mine in terms of volume - xcept he has THAT longer wall to place the speakers 12 feet apart - but less space for best Lp. of course i enjoyed the bass and impact of the KH, it's a thrill but this well-known impression of "way too much bass and resonance" immediately started nagging at me. my friend listens too loud for me, i kept lowering volume to match my taste and it sounded great. bass and impact was still there and maybe more articulate than at higher peak. so it's a tough decision. get them and play the odds of a real good surprise or rely on intuition and experience. heres a pic of my room and corners where the KH need to stand. sofa is about10 feet away from this wall and there's bigger space/room behind - but i cant push these side walls away. feel free to comment and advice.
  20. they look great, could be standard/factory klipsch LS risers. would you be kind enough to show the blueprints and how you stained the wood to match birch? that sub is kinda scary though ;-) i'd love to see your table tuba, too
  21. thanks for the threads. it may fit in the Kia. but from what i've read better not on the side? thanks again ok. today i listened to my very first pair of KHorn. it's an OG model from late sixties. beautiful dark wood and brown fabric. i should have taken pics of horn and filters. god how old they looked! (and dusty i should add). the way they find their space in corners without imposing themselves is amazing. they found their place in a modern house, about 5 meters apart. listening post is about 3 meters, which settles a pretty large sounstage but somehow limited for sweet spot. the system is beautiful high end vintage: Mc30 amps, Audio Research SP6 pre, audiomat dac, CEC TL3N drive, Verdier TT... after a while, we switched to a Full Digital Amp i had brought with me for the fun of it. My host ordered one right away ;-) So i finally discovered what's all the fuss about Khorn bass. it's huge, low, infra, articulate, incredible. we listened to Muddy Waters/folk singer, Nina Simone, Thelonious Monk, Saint Germain (90's deep jazzy house music). bass is spectacular but as i feared, somehow a little too upfront for "this" kind of room - which is pretty similar to my own living room - except the KH won't be that much apart and i have more open space. (3m apart/5m away) friend loves his music loud (which of course emphasized the baaaaaassy effect) and i kept turning it down to what i found the best/natural level... so i won't know if KH are fit for my home until i bring them in... but i definitely heard what's so special about them... i opened a new topic to deal with these room issues https://community.klipsch.com/index.php?/topic/170566-khorns-and-a-room-new-chapter/
  22. ok, will wear bell bottoms tomorrow :-) from what i gathered today, it's a firsthand pair in OG condition, never toyed with. k55v is inside as expected (see pics). can't hardly recognize the small tweeter on 2nd pic but you guys will know better ;-) more to come hopefully from the seller before i drive up there. seller is a pro, the speakers are a friend's of his who needs space and has audition issues. he seems ok for reservation as offered, i'd like a few tips for transportation. i drive a Kia Carnival, which is similar to a Chrysler Grand Voyager. will the KH fit in? i'll take the Kia's inside dimensions of course. the La Scala were at ease in it. excitment is growing. tomorrow first KH audition
  23. thanks john for your expertise and advices. still waiting for more pics and data... i'm afraid i'd rarely crank that home system anyway but it's good to know. actually, since i have the La Scala, i realize i enjoy listening at lower volume, at night of course for family's sake - but by day, too. music comes out so natural and effortless it doesn't need to be too upfront. but i understand the KH bass magic may change all this... ;-D
