Dont rule out a commercially made screen, there are some fantastic ones out there for a few hundred dollars. I understand that maybe funds don't allow for it, but if they do take a look on Marketplace, cl, etc. Sometimes they can be had for less than $400.

I built mine as I wanted acoustic transparent. I used cheap spandex from Joanne fabric, black than white, cheap pine 1x3s. I think for a little more it can be alot better, oh and I to am using the BenQ W1070.

I have decide to do a motorized drop down screen for movies and  use my old plasma tv for everyday viewing..My room measures 11 by 17 and I found a da lite motorized 11 ft screen on let go for 80 bucks. It's a commercial screen with a gain of 1,1 black backing and borders. The cord is missi g ( Screen came from  a school and was hard wired) and no remote but for 20 bucks I can rig up a cord and get a plug in universal remote.  I know the screen is too big but for the money I could not resist giving a try. Now I just have to get this monster hung up, I will let you know how it works out  once up .

    Hello all,

I was looking to purchase a entry level stereo setup for my brother-in-law who just relocated to Atlanta after recently getting a job at Georgia Tech. This week he reached out to me to see if I could help him piece something inexpensive together so he could listen to his old records when I came to visit him this weekend. After trying to look for leads on craigslist and other local classifieds and not coming up with much, I thought I would post on here to see if anyone had any old equipment in the area.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks everyone.

    Jack

Pair of klf 10`s  and an entry level Yamaha receiver for 250.00. I live up by 285 and Peachtree industrial. Let me know if interested and I can send details on equipment.

How'd you do it and do you have pictures?

It's been a long time since I stripped them, sorry no pics. I have another sw 12 in black I recently bought  I'am going start strip this weekend. Going to remove the woofer and radiator and only use stripper if possible, will only use a high grit sand paper if I have to. If memory services me I used stripped, putty knife, and a roll of paper towels to strip the other 2 speakers, no sand paper. Unfortunately the stripper today is weaker so may have to use sand paper. I avoid using electric sander especially orbital ones, they can leave small swirl marks in veneer you can not see till you paint or stain.

I will give you an update in a couple days.

Zxpc is the one I was thinking of.

My front zxpc are 17 x10 and 11 3/4 deep - long throw. Looked at diy audio reommend zxpc are18 x 10 only 8 inches deep, OP stated Polars are similar to a k 510. I am going to try and build a k 510 this weekend, if it does not work out I am going to try the short throws . Thanks for the help Bob and everyone.

What are you building Lkj? I have a k510 project in progress as well. K510s on top of 2x12 Eminence KappaLite LF drivers.

I am trying to a build a 510 replica for rears because of it's shallow depth, 5.1 system for music. I am hoping with the horn measurements I can use my touch screen laptop and create top and bottom rib/template of the horns curves. I toyed with mdf and   had some luck with making curved panels. I believe it's called a Kell cut, (maybe not) where you want the curve you cut  approx. every 1/4 inch the length of panel going almost all the way thur panel. Once cut the mdf can be easily curved, tried with plywood but had better luck with mdf.

If I can pull off making a decent/close 510 horn I will be using a single 12 kappa c to match fronts speakers kappa c 15's.

Dang Tom, I just went to get a tape measure, came back and saw your post. And yes it's 5 inches. Subtracting the thickness of the plastic it's 4.75 inches. And it measures like it would fit into a 13 1/2 by 7 inch cut

You Guys are doing the  OP a disservice. He asked a simple question. I have a current version of the K-510 horn (the one currently sold and having the "mumps"). At the mouth the thickness of the material is 1/4 inch, The outside width is just shy of 15 inches. The outside height is just shy of 9 inches.

The width from the center of the hole to the other hole center is 14 1/4 inches in width (the holes are near the end of the "flare"). The height from the center of the holes is 8 1/4 inches. (vertical holes are about a little over 5/8 inch from the center of the hole to about where the flare ends)

The depth (from the face of the mouth to the back of the throat is 5 inches).

I hope this helps. It sounds like you have a project in mind. Please note that the K-510 horn (current version) is quite light. If you had a heavy driver mounted to the throat and the mouth mounted to the baffle, you might damage the face of the horn (the mouth-flange).

    Good Luck,

    -Tom

Thanks Tom your help is much appreciated.

… o O (let's take the door out of the frame, and reverse it)

I've done it before and did not find it that difficult. Do a net search for door stop, home depot has a hinge door stop that may work. If you find the HD site there is a video on how to install, cheap and easy.

If I could screw down that door stop posted above i would. For everyday I feel ok right now, but if somebody was to really push or force the door open, it could hit it. Gonna give it some additional thought; open to ideas.

Can see the complete door, would it be possible to turn it around so door opens in other direction?

  9. Looks like you only have a zone 2 pre out with that reciever, could play zone 2 hook up but only in 2 channel stereo. Your reciever does not have 7 channel pre out for surround sound. I would return them and get a passive speaker that will work with your reciever unless you only want to use them for 2 channel hook up to the zone 2 pre out. If you try zone 2 don't forget to set reciever to zone 2.

Some CD/DVD  players will have surround sound pre out,  OPPO comes to mind but there are others. That could be another option for you but I think returning the speakers and getting different ones is easiest solution. GL

Looks like rca input on speakers are only for phone input so zone 2 pre out from reciever may not work. Only thing that may work is usb port from receiver to speakers but reviews do not state if usb from receiver is input or output, if output it should work if input it won't.

You can plug the cap and coil values you have into an easily-found online crossover calculator, with the driver impedances, and see what the crossover frequencies calculate out to.  You may well find you've got excessive gaps or overlaps.  Also a calibrated USB mike and free software will show you what you've got for relative driver levels.  Really, it behoves one to go about experimentation like this using such tools so you can correlate what you're hearing with data.  It can cut much guesswork (and time) out of the process.

Good idea with cal. I will give it a try. Yea I do need to pick up a spl meter and Mike.  For now this is a temp. situation till I get some new cabinets made. Just tring to get a decent sound without blowing any drivers for now

  11. Sounds great running off the chorus crossovers, still I wonder where the crossover points are now. I believe the chorus( heritage line) use 4, 16 and 8 loads on the crossovers with cover points of 650 and 6000hz. Would not mind if the points dropped to 450 to 500 and 5000 on high. Still happy with the results so far and really starting to like the de 10  tweeter.

Think I will take a look at the khorn xover and see how up it compares to the chorus, thanks for the input.

  12. Zxpc 11 by 17 inch horn with seleuim d405 and de10 tweeter mounted on top of the zxpc horn. Selenium is 8 ohm and should have been 16, yea I messed up. Tried the de10 with a k 79 horn lens but sounded better/ less harsh mounted to the zxpc horn. Using bass bin of chorus with the chorus crossover hooked to selenium d405 and de 10. Sounds great, voices are larger people seem to be right in the room.

Question is do I need to change the tap and caps on the crossover. I have 2 sets of extra chorus crossover caps of the same value I can use. I am experiment with diy chorus II center for now. When I get it figured out I will make the same changes to my chorus II mains. Kind of a chorus III mains and center. Did some research on subject but think I gained just enough info to be dangerous. Need some help from you smarter more experienced guys before I start blowing drivers,  thanks

You have to be really careful buying on Black Friday.  Many times tv/camera/PC/tool makers will put out special items for door busters.  They look very similar to the normal items but will have less features.  Tools may have smaller batteries, PC's have less RAM, TV's lose options etc.  Be sure you compare apples to apples and double check item numbers.  Manufacturers have gotten really good at this game.

2+ Been my experience they also don't usually offer the best/better tv's on Black Friday deals.
