I've heard the SH50 and they were speakers I was considering at one point. Very dynamic speakers, but I couldn't shake the feeling that I was aware that I was listening to horns. I'm not good at describing it since it wasn't like the coloration you hear from those audiophile horn speakers with round horns stacked on top of each that beam at their upper passbands.

I haven't heard any of John Inlow's designs either, but would love to.

    Do you drive or fly?

Looks like the closest place is in West Hampton, Massachusetts which appears to be "just off" the highway (if you're driving 91)

It's been a while since I've spoken with Henry however, I once specifically asked him if he'd be open to audition his Jubilee's and he (as has virtually every other owner that I can think of) said yes.

I drive, it's 190 miles from me so not too bad. I go along 93 south then head south west. West Hampton is a bit of a detour, but I would not turn down the invitation :D

Went to school in New Haven, and loved visiting New Hampshire.

I think there is a set of Jubes in New Hampshire, @Coytee has the list and I think he recently mentioned to someone that there was a pair their.  He should see this and maybe he can jump in.

Are you a Yale alum by any chance? I did some research at the Yale hospital, they have exceptional facilities.

Welcome to the family!  I'd suggest you venture over to the "CES" thread and download a copy of the PWK "8 Cardinal Points" from my recent post there.  Every Klipsch fan should have this!

I enjoy learning about "how we hear" (currently making my way through Floyd Toole's book) that I like to apply to my audio philosophy, so it was an interesting read. The controlled directivity of the K-402 is one reason I was really drawn to them.

I will definitely check the RTM forum, thanks for the suggestions.

  5. Thanks very much for the welcomes all.

Welcome to the forum.  A lot of Jazz lovers here.

Where are you located?   We may be able to hook you up for a listen to Jubes sooner rather than later.

  6. Hi all,

I think this forum just opened up to me after making a certain number of posts. I registered here after falling in love with the sound of horns and the live like sound I heard when I played large symphony music like Bruckner or Mahler and 50s/60s jazz. It's the K-402 in particular that caught my eye and I'd eventually like to hear the Jubilee system. Unfortunately making the Hope meeting this year is out of the question due to work.

My screen name is taken from one of the early 50s hard bop jazz groups "The Jazz Messengers" that drummer Art Blakey would go on to use through a few decades with various musicians.

They are good guys to deal with and I trust their ears. I've heard their systems and they are beautiful. I'm going to New York this year to hear their new stuff and Wheel Fi.. Dave Slagle just posted many different new options for autoformers today. Check it out http://www.intactaudio.com/atten.html

I follow his blog as well. I don't need a volume pot/AVC/TVC these days as I do it digitally. He is on my list of guys if I ever need a bandwidth limited OPT.

  8. I guess I'll offer another contrarian opinion and say I've never heard any folded horn operating into the midrange sound high fidelity or transparent. Just an opinion and based off recordings I've made of acoustic classical and jazz. Even a low efficiency direct radiator (far from my preference) sounds more like what me and my friends heard live than the folded horns. The best of them being the ATC woofer/dome mid combination. Which is why I have been pretty intrigued by seti's midbass horn and the one @Bjorn was working on, but he hasn't updated that thread in a while.

It can...and do well.  Very very hard to build....

I'm not planning to build any of this stuff myself. I'm currently shopping around for acousticians to work with designing a room from scratch, hopefully trying to keep some of the large wavelength absorbers hidden in false walls, etc. I'm really intrigued by straight midbass horns, all the ones I've heard sounded better to me than tapped horns when operated up high (beyond sub bass). This is referring to acoustic bass and cello only, not home theater or rock.

Dropping off at 70 or 80 Hz, what sort of acoustic space are we talking about?

I hope the thread starter doesn't mind this tangent. I will create another thread if it's an issue.

Don't ask me the hard questions maybe JC will chime in as I just listen to them.

They are big heavy and they have two Eminence Pro Delta-12A each. Those are 12s. I believe I posted the plans as well on itishifi.com.

Thanks, I'll look for the plans. Another fan of Dave Slagle (had one of his attenuators in an older system) and Jeffrey Jackson here. Never met either of them.

Minus the sub I own the tractrix horns and the K403 horns. This two way doesn't go down low maybe 70hz 80hz? I dunno. I built a passive line level crossover 600hz bi amp with tubes and this is fun. I really enjoy it. When I veneer my Jubs this system goes back in place.

When my attic is built out they are going up there with the other bass horns.

Are you getting horn loading down to 80 Hz or is it acting more like a direct radiator down that low? Do you mind offering more details like the rough dimensions and drivers used? Thanks.

I have many opinions on horn loaded bass regarding pros and cons and my experience.  Making from scratch and listening to others.....

    Every setup has a compromise.

When the Jubilee is the focus of the discussion....two things come to my mind......

    1.  If you want a fully horn loaded system without the use of a subwoofer, the Jubilee "systems" are the best.

    2.  If you want a fully horn loaded 2-way system without the use of a subwoofer, the Jubilee "systems" are the best.

jwc, I came across some of these pictures on ItIsHifi blog, I believe this straight horn is yours? If so do you mind saying a bit more about it? I'm interested in various midbass horns with the K-402.

I think that you'd be missing the clean bass of the Jubilee bass bins.  Subwoofers that are not horn loaded have high levels of distortion in comparison.  I recommend crossing at 40 Hz instead, which I currently use, and have experimented with the crossover frequency in my listening room.  YMMV.

    Chris

I am planning to do a Welti mid front wall and mid back wall setup that "destructively" eliminates room modes (along with plenty of bass traps from RPG). So this means I need subwoofers with phase controls.

The other way to achieve the same effect is to use two subwoofers, each of which is positioned in a lobe of different acoustic polarity. This means that the positive sound wave created by the subwoofer in the left, positive lobe is met by a sound wave of equal level but negative polarity created by the subwoofer in the other lobe. If you have two sound waves that are identical in frequency and level but the polarities are opposite then there will be perfect cancellation. This means that there will again not be any measurable frequency response peak or time domain ringing.

The authors built a mathematical simulation that examined the impact of a different subwoofer numbers (up to one thousand!) and placement on the MSV. The results of these simulations showed that a configuration of two or four subwoofers in a rectangular room could significantly reduce the MSV such that global equalization could be effectively employed to produce a smooth frequency response. This result is instinctively expected as an extension of the simple model we introduced last week where two subwoofers were used to destructively drive a particular room mode.

For more details follow this link to a PDF of the paper.

  14. I did a bit of searching on the Jubilee after reading about them on another DIY forum. I am currently using Audiovero Acourate to generate room correction and digital crossover convolution filters. I see these have very good objective measured performance. A few questions regarding the home 2-way Jubilee

I currently don't have the ability to corner load speakers since I have massive bass traps in the corners which make a marked improvement in my low/mid bass room response. What is the rough frequency extension of the speakers if they aren't corner loaded? I am using a Geddes style subwoofer arrangement for smooth in room response.

I see many people have upgraded to TAD 4002 drivers. I have TAD 4001 drivers already, would these work in the K-402? They do not have the throat adapter like the TAD 4002.

What is the sensitivity of the bass horn alone? I could only find sensitivity of the 3 way Jubilee system. How would a 20 watt push pull tube amp fare on the bass horns? The subwoofers would be crossed with a fairly steep crossover at around 70-80 Hz, so the bass horn amp would not need to deliver a tremendous amount of power in the lowest frequencies.

    Thank you.
