  1. Ah ha! The gospel according to physics. What a welcome relief.....
  2. Hello Doc- Relay racks come in many variations. What I used to call relay racks were attached via bolts to floor and rafters and looked like they would be the only thing standing after the earthquake. However, there are free standing versions called 'server' racks (used in our modern computer rooms) that perform the same function and also come with cable channels if you want to get real fancy. I would check with a couple of sources in your area - EDS used to have a used equipment warehouse in the Dallas area and there is a company called EPS that may have an associated seller in your area. Both would be open to us commoners and may have some good options. I recommend used - you can repair cosmetic issues to match your decor. Also. these babies can run as high as $1,000 (plus) new. I picked up some nice 19" , removable sides units at EPS for $200 each several months ago. Good luck.
  3. I agree with an earlier comment - these are a steal at the current bids. You get a decent piece of history and a pretty nice sounding speaker. If I have it correct, that piezo is either a Motorola or an EV - both made some very nice piezos. It probably allows for a very simple HF Xover and by putting an LPad in the mix lets this speaker box adjust and sound pretty good. I also like the LF extension via venting - I have always thought that a similar concepted Heresy would be a big seller. I am considering joining the fray of bidding on this one.....
  4. My heartfelt condolences to Mary and Family. Don't be afraid to ask anything of this wierd group of folks bound by audio - we respond much like a family here and would do anything to help. As always Dean - you are a class act and offer a model to follow. Thanks for sharing.
  5. I agree with capo - however, if it is a dedicated speaker for HT with a good sub woofer, you may not be so concerned with LF extension and that would open up options for woofers to be used with the horns being matched to your existing KLF 30s.
  6. Don't know if Tom has stated the above before, but I wanted to thank him - That is a Dead On statement of my thoughts. I have wandered all around those comments and never had anything so concise. Thanks Tom - I agree 100%. That doesn't mean I don't like the CWs - they may be my favorite because of their versatility.
  7. and anyone else interested. This is a listing for 1900 albums that some of you may want to investigate http://stlouis.craigslist.org/for/154918169.html
  8. for my ears I would go with the Belle config. Easily my preference having heard both.
  9. yo Maron - right on. Took my thoughts and said them much better than I. Constant directivity is my preference, but these jewels did something nothing else could do as well when they first came about.
  10. I am not sure about the out of band stuff, but I am more than just a bit intrigued by a switching amplifier concept. By its very nature it should be a good performer. If done right it could handle tons of bandwidth - if its algorythms were well designed, it could be very quick. I do think that noise measurements will have less relevance in a switched environment if traditionally tested. By its nature, a switch needs something attached as a catalyst for is actions....say a speaker.
  11. Yo Ms. Dtel - I haven't been around enough recently to remind everyone that I have 16 personalities (12 are active at the moment, 2 are in 'time out', 1 is pouting because the rest of us voted to watch an Adam Sandler movie last night and the other seems to have quit participating in any conversations lately). Amy - all of us post under one avatar..... Amy is my fantasy - there I said it in public. Clu is too much like my most common alter self - Helen. Less is a great one nighter. I was infatuated with Ms. Dtel until I realized what the avatar 'dtel's wife' meant (duh...). Now, what was this thread originally about?
  12. Al covered what I was thinking (actually he put it into much fewer and concise terms). I have recently had to perform something very similar to get my High Definition reception from cable to consistently work well on both tuners in my DVR (MOXI). I had little more than migraines (the migraines grew to epic proportions when I actually had a cable tech on site) until I decided to treat the digital signal transport (the cable) like it needed a crossover to work with the tuners- this reality check happened while pondering why the cable card seemed just fine with the same signal. So, making an assumption that there was clearly a difference in the respective drivers (tuners) I began an experiment that, in effect, played with combinations of resistance in 'series' that included a couple of 'parrallel' solutions that were in series. Measurements of SNR and AGC were my guideposts for changes. Whew - the point. Maybe our friends at Peavy had a similar problem. The design said one thing and the box created a situation that needed a bit of tweaking to fix....It worked for me.
  13. Please don't Craig - this is like our own personal authentication - a properly spelled post would make us think someone had stolen your avatar![]
  14. Yeah - I couldn't lift anything heavy for quite sometime after I had my box replaced[]
  15. I have an all Heresy HT and think it is the cat's meow. It is a mix of HI and HII and works well. The set up is HII main front, a center DIY with K77 tweet and K55 mid, HI in ceiling for sides and SVS 20-39 pci for sub.
  16. Time for a contra opinion here - there is flat wire made for just the situation you are talking about - a concrete base that will be covered in carpet. It is a solution folks have put in for me in numerous office building renovations. It lays reasonably flat, is covered by a flat piece of metal sheathed in a rubber compound (very thin, durable stuff) and taped over. The catch? - well, it may cost about the same as cutting into the concrete and laying conduit. It is something used often in leasehold space where not futzing with the concrete is a good thing.
  17. Not in my experience. The variations are quite high - many of the driver manufacturers will give some horn guidelines. Some of the best papers on this can be found on JBL's Pro site. However, I have had some luck with Hornres (and dang if I can't seem to find where it is on the web) - a tool that can take the the driver info, the shape/type, throat and size of the horn and do a reasonable job of forecasting what you will get when combined. What I haven't been able to find is a calculation that will give you guidance on where to start, so my approach is hunt and peck. If you can find HornRres it may be helpful. There are some surprising things when you do this. I found that a JBL 2370A was a great match for an older driver when folks originally told me that it would be a mismatch. Good luck.
  18. I like the risers Marty. I am not sure if my thinking is true, but I would consider screwing the risers on to mitigate vibrations on an un attached riser (although the wieght of my speakers in the ceiling weem to be good enough).
  19. Couldn't agree more with Dee here. In my book the Heresy is the best bang for the buck speaker I have ever encountered (excluding DIY) and I suggest refreshing the caps and listen for a bit as they were intended to be heard. In the end most folks would rather upgrade the tweeter which really can be quite good. Again - BEC is a good source for all.
