  1. IMO, If the T18 is any indication, two of the TTs should easily fill out that room, and compliment your La Scalas. When I ran the T18, with my LS , it wasn’t overpowering huge bass, but it was seamless. Sounded just like La Scalas, only with more bottom end ooomph. I think I really could’ve/should’ve done two T18s and it would’ve been fine, in my smaller room.
  2. Yes, Jason is right. There’s no way a 12” would fit. Initially I was going with the 8” driver, because I remembered how much of a pita the 8” was to install in the T18. I figured the 8” would be easier in the Table Tuba. Then I thought, “In for a penny, in for a pound.” 10” it is. It will just take patience.
  3. Decisions have been made regarding the driver, cabinet size, & placement. Even managed to test fit & cut most of the parts (I know it’s not exactly as written, I’m doing the cutting outside and it was dry & sunny. Don’t judge). Going with the BFM suggested 10” DCS255-4; and a panel width of 21”. Hope to get a little actual assembly done tomorrow.
  4. This will be my second BFM design build. If it turns out as well as the first, I imagine I’ll be satisfied with the results. Still working out the final details. Feel free to ask questions, comment, or criticize, whichever is more appropriate. It will be mostly be filling out the low end for a pair of 1980 La Scalas. In an 1,800 CF room. Still sorting out width, placement, and was originally planning to use an 8” sub, but having some buyer’s remorse. Maybe should go 10”? At any rate, I got the wood on Saturday, and began on Sunday. I’ve made it this far.
  5. Well, it’s been about a year since the T18 project first began. It is filling its originally intended purpose of adding some low end oomph in the family room system. It rocks enough to upset the dog, (at least one of them anyway). She hates the Marvel movies. It has really upped the game in that system. Now, I’m planning to turn this pile of plywood into a Table Tuba for my “Music Room” I’ll start a new build thread but figured there might be some interest from this one. Open to thoughts & input on the new project.
  6. Excellent speaker choice. I’ve got the older version and they are great speakers, in an almost reasonable size. My wife doesn’t even notice them now. We’ve got three cats, none declawed ( because that’s awful) they’ve never bothered a speaker, not once. They’ve torn up other things just, not speakers.
  7. It wound up in the family room where it’s hidden in a corner (so much for my lacquer work 😀) It was originally intended to go into this room to give a bit more low end to what was a 5.0 set up. It’s working very well even though it’s a larger area this little sub manages to add some impressive low end oomph to the system. While still having an adequate WAF. I guess I’ll need to build another Tuba for the music room.
  8. Amen! Foreigner and Journey are two of the worst bands ever! I’m damned if I understand how the kids today will still listen to Journey. No accounting for tastes I suppose.
  9. In my set up for HT, I’ve got Heresys for L/C/R the L/R are on the floor, with the center sitting higher than the L/R. Out of necessity, the TV sits too high even higher than yours. I don’t think it is an issue. I say give it a try. If it doesn’t work, they can always sit on something like end tables or stands. It could even be used as extra storage space.
  10. Very close and agrees with my rudimentary measurements. Thanks for the tech. It’s nice to know there are at least a few of us WV folk that care a bit about decent audio. I’m just east of Charleston. Michael
  11. I’ve built speaker stands, odds & ends with the 1/2” MDF. Seemed the same as 3/4” stuff. It’s a perfectly adequate material, like I said I just hate the dust & weight, mostly the dust. Plus it’s just, inelegant. However, it is listed as an acceptable material in the plans. And is definitely “cost effective”.
  12. Thank you. You seem to know what you are doing on these subs, that compliment carries some weight. I had no better luck locally sourcing the Auraco. I considered using MDF, I just hate the dust and weight. I’ll definitely build another Tuba Sub, probably a THTLP, but another T18, or Table Tuba may happen first. I’ll take more time with the wood next build. Thank you for your part in sending me down this path. I doubt I’d ever build, or buy another direct radiator sub again.
  13. Thank ya. Will do. The music room is a mess right now. I really think I’ve found the sweet spot. It’s midway along the left long wall, which isn’t supposed to be optimal. But as I’d recently moved the other sub into the left rear corner, it was an open space. It sounded really good there. Much better than the other sub sounded when it was in that same spot.
  14. Yes. Width is variable. This one is 12”, I should have gone wider, but as I had to have the Baltic Birch shipped, the economical choice was 12”W. Plus it was planned to fit a certain location. Even with the smaller size, the output is quite impressive.
  15. I took inspiration from a Les Paul guitar, with an homage to Lava Lamps.
  16. Ok. I’m calling it finished. Perhaps a little outside the box, for a subwoofer but I did say WTF. I’m fairly satisfied with the results. At least I’m focusing on the good and ignoring the bad.
  17. True for certain. I’ve learned more than a few things by not letting my ignorance, or ineptitude stand in my way.
  18. I continue to be impressed with this subwoofer. If anyone is on the fence about building one, just do it. I can’t imagine being disappointed with the results. I’m certain I’ll be building another BFM design in the future, probably a THTLP. I’ve finally decided on a finish for this one. I’m probably going beyond my abilities, both in concept and execution. Oh well, sometimes ya gotta say WTF, and roll with it. I’ll post pictures once it’s finished. Unless it’s terrible, then I’ll post pictures of the Plan B redo.
  19. I’ll cast a vote for the Crites CT120s. They were, at least to my aging ears, quite a bit smoother than the K77s on my La Scalas. Horn and guitar highs just sound better. Mine use the AA crossover, and no changes were required.
  20. I did the same for my ‘80 (“U” Code) La Scalas. I just wanted to keep the old crossovers “stock”. Just in case someone down the road might want them the way they left Hope. Honestly, I didn’t hear much difference. The old ones must’ve been close to spec. But with all new parts, I figure they will be good for another thirty years.
  21. Excellent choices. I’ve got those plans as well. I like the option of placing the THTLP on its end, that’s a big space saver. I think the horn mouth is pointed towards the wall to basically lengthen the horn? At least that’s my understanding of the theory. With your angled ceiling, I’d think that the horn mouth firing up would be the way to go. Honestly, after hearing the little T18 and what it’s capable of, I cant imagine two of the THTs in the same room. That should be spectacular. I’d also think capable of causing minor structural damage. I do like the idea of the “pillars” I think that would look great. Looking forward to seeing your progress.
  22. The Tubas don’t seem to need too much amp. I’m using a Yung 300w plate amp. I doubt you’d need much more than that for any of them, even the big ones. As far as cost they are really reasonable. I’ve got less than $300 in mine. However, it is still unfinished so a little more to spend. You will need to measure and make fairly straight cuts though 😀 Oh and you’ll need to follow directions. The designer is big on following directions, and sticking with the plan.
  23. Forgot the Subwoofer question. I just built a T18 tuba sub it was fun and sounds great. Bill Fitzmaurice has some great designs, I’m definitely going to build another one of his subs. If you are moderately handy, it’s worth a look. https://billfitzmaurice.info/index.html
