  1. Mike, My Chorus I's came in factory boxes with a cardboard-backed foam "tray" for the top & bottom like the ones mentioned, these were only about 4 inches deep and about 3/4 inch thick. The strength of the box came from 4 V-shaped extremely dense cardboard "corners" that stood inside the box. By V-shaped I mean that they were a piece only about 5 or 6 inches wide (maybe 1/8" thick), bent 90 degrees... hard to explain, but really just a reinforcement of the boxes corners (or edges, running vertically.) I tried to keep my original boxes, but after 12 years & almost as many moves they didn't make it... but I never saw the need for 2" of foam all the way around! Of coarse if you tried to reproduce what I just described someone would surely skewer the box & prove me wrong! I'm only an hour or so away from you, I'd give you my old boxes if they were still any good!
  2. EEK! Yes, I have one of those too... only much, much smaller! I might not be married right now if THAT happened! She knows the deal now, there's always something THICK under whatever is holding the candle! She worked in stores that sold candles for years, my parents owned a candle shop when I was growing up... we gotta have 'em! Because of the size of these things they tend to collect objects that need to be out of the reach of little kids, unfortunately that includes candles! Is there a good way of getting rid of scorched rings without trying to re-finish the whole cabinet (meaning both if you want a match!) besides the obvious nice looking square of cloth that is now there?
  3. I see what you are talking about with the baffle across the bottom... but I'm positive there's nothing like that in the Chorus. You can almost stick your head into one of those ports & see the woofer! You can actually put your entire arm in there and try to wrap your hand around the magnet on the woofer. I might just try the tube idea, I'm just not sure about the science behind it... I guess I could just go almost to the back wall and give it a test-drive! I wish I had some way of definitely measuring the difference, all I have is my ears & body feeling the bass. I guess I could listen to a low freq. sweep from a CD & see if it seems to make different things rattle around the room when it gets to the bottom end!
  4. I have a pair of Chorus I's that I absolutely love, and I was surprised to find almost no talk about them here. I read your other post concerning upgrading them, and I've always wondered about the ports too... they almost seem like an afterthought! They seem to do a great job, but I'd have to hear it from someone on the inside to believe that they are truely the optimal solution for the bottom end of this speaker. I'd love to know if we could stick a couple tubes in there and get down to 35hz or lower!
  5. Looks like good advice... I wish I had known that 5 years ago when I melted the grill on my Chorus with a hairdryer trying to get candlewax off! Ice FIRST, then heat... gotta remember that, my wife still burns candles on top of the speakers!
  6. Thanks PhilH... I tried emailing Klipsch over a year ago, and got a less than satisfactory response. I was glad to discover this forum the other day, and figured I'd find some help judging by the excellent stuff I've seen posted already. Thanks for the heads up on the phone # - I'll try that!
  7. I have a pair of Tangent 10's, one speaker has a blown woofer... any suggestions for a replacement, meaning something that will perform just like the other original since they are obviously going to be used together - or should I abandon that idea and replace both woofers (in that case, any suggestions for a pair of affordable drivers that will compliment the enclosure/crossover/tweeter, running on an Adcom GFA535?)
  8. I just found this forum today... nice place you got here! I was thrilled to find this thread, what is it about Bose vs. Klipsch??? It's like cats & dogs - they were made to fight!!! I bought a pair of Chorus' in '89, and that's when I got my first taste of the feud! I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the Bose lightbulbs yet!? Or did I just miss that part somewhere... surely someone has pointed out the lightbulbs that are located inside many of their speakers! There were acrylic versions of the acoustimess "subwoofer" that allowed you to see the intricate arrangement that was responsible for that DEEP bass... if you looked closely at the crossover board there was a series of small tubular orangish lightbulbs mounted right there - they burned whatever input the drivers couldn't handle from what I understand (and were probably never actually used to demo music, just a nice visual prop.) I actually saw them in action in a pair of 401's one night at an outdoor party, sure enough there was a bright orange glow visible inside the port on the rear of the speaker! There was that claim of "unlimited wattage" for the 901's... sure, send the cleanest 30 watts to the drivers, then the rest goes to the lightbulbs!
