  1. Hello Arash, It would be easier to date the speakers if you could post photos of the magnets. Good luck with your sale. Did you complete the Cornscalas you were building? Is there a thread about them?
  2. The photos could be better, but they seem like a bargain.
  3. Speakerlab mounted both EV horns vertically. According to EV, there was a slight improvement in dispersion for both horns when mounted in the vertical orientation. PWK mentioned that the K-77(T-35) was mounted in the horizontal orientation, when stereo came into fashion, to avoid having to make mirror image versions for a stereo pair. According to PWK, it didn't make "a dime's worth of difference" in the performance, but it did save on production costs. That was the same rationale for mounting the horns to the back of the motorboards. PWK wasn't saying it isn't better to do it the other way, just that it didn't make economic sense. PWK was an excellent engineer. Part of excellent engineering is designing to goals, such as weight, size, cost, etc., in addition to performance. He did that very well.
  4. Michael, Perhaps you can trade Pascal for some cheese. Pascal must have taken Thebes' recent post about PIO to heart.
  5. Glenn- Your suggestions regarding room placement are valid, but impractical. Right now the woofer is under my desk tight in the left corner of the footwell. The port is facing forward (toward me) and the grill is facing to the right, without obstructions. I suspect the "room/corner gain" is exaggerated by its placement, but, there's really no other place to put it. On another note, let's try to meet at Brett's in Royal Oak soon. I'm available most evenings or weekends (later Saturday or Sunday). Tonight won't work. Some local team is playing in some game on TV.
  6. Hello iKerry- I've contacted Klipsch tech support. I'll share any reply. EDIT @ 16:51 EDT Jon from Klipsch promptly replied as follows: "Power consumption is less than a LED nightlight. They must remain on when not in use because they go into idle after 15 minutes. Lastly, there is no gain controls besides the one on the control pod. The only other option would be to have an EQ on your computer which if turned down would achieve what you are looking for. Let me know if you have any other questions. Great stuff on the forums by the way. Thanks, When replying to this email please include all replies. Jon Benefiel - Headphone and Personal Audio Support Rep." I guess I'll stop worrying, plus I can now unplug my Big Bird nightlight.
  7. Yes I do! That's a great recording, and sounds phenomenal when you play it very loud! Mike What? I can't hear you. I played I've Got The Music In Me very loud night after night after night. To some degree this boils down to semantics. All analog is not vinyl. Neither is all digital CDs. Comparing vinyl to CDs is not comparing analog to digital; it's comparing analog records to digital CDs. IMO, vinyl is a less desirable analog medium than SOTA reel to reel. Simlarly, CDs are far from the best digital medium. Two tin cans and a tight string are pure analog, but you wouldn't compare that to the worst CD.
  8. Mike owns and likes "Thelma Houston and Pressure Cooker - I've got the Music in me (Sheffield Labs)" All of the Sheffield Lab direct to disc recordings were excellent recordings of excellent performances. I owned and enjoyed many. I owned more than one copy of I've Got The Music In Me by Thelma Houston & Pressure Cooker. Despite the best of care, the first copy grew noisy from repeated playings in the DJ biz I ran in the 70s. That record was vinyl at its best. EVERYONE who heard it played through 4 Speakerlab SKhorns recognized the sonic superiority. They might not know that dynamic range, frequency responce, etc. were the reason, but they knew they liked it. Several people thought there were real drums being used to enhance the playback of the record, the percussion attacks were incredible. The direct to disc version is no longer available new. The CD from the orginal master is still available. It too sounds amazing, but it remains as good as new play after play after play. IMO, a state of the art recording of the original performance whether on reel to reel tape, vinyl, CD, SACD, etc. would sound excellent. IMO, the vinyl version sounds excellent despite its analog medium, not because of it.
  9. Before control of the thread is returned to the OP, please promise to document the dissection of your La Scalas in a dedicated thread. I predict you'll be pleased with ported La Scalas.
  10. Other threads have described my restoration of La Scalas for the local high school's band practice room. As a high schoool student was assisting me in getting one of the speakers onto the instrument locker he asked enthusiastically, "how many watts does it have?" I replied, "Speakers don't have watts, amplifiers have watts, while these speakers can handle hundreds of watts, they need only one watt to play at 100db." I went on to explain that the H/K 730 receiver being used put out approximately 40 watts/channel. The instructor then decided to test whether the music could be heard throughout the school. He put on the Beatles' Back In The USSR at about 100db. The kid was duly impressed. It sounded like a jet plane was landing in the room. The music in the ground level band room could be heard in the far corners of the 3 story building.
  11. Hi Glenn- Same to you, Verna and Rose. Were your ears burning last night? I was in Allen Park, Pretty close to your house, and your name came up.
  12. It seems to me you'll need to disconnect the K-77s to confirm continuity. Without unsoldering at least one lead to each K-77, the DMM might not be able to distinguish whether the circuit is across the K-77 diaphragms or through other paths in the networks. If necessary, replacing the diaphragms is relatively easy. I regularly fried the voice coils in the T-35s (K-77s) in the 4 Speakerlab SKhorns used in a DJ biz in the 70s. Slow Ride, by Foghat at ear bleed levels from 300 watts/channel of Dynaco SS power will do that. I'd call EV on Monday, they'd send a diaphragm, or two, and by Friday I'd be good to go to deafen more adolescents over the weekend. I'd send a check for $17/diaphragm (if memory serves) to 600 Cecil St., Buchanan, MI. Those were the days . . . sigh. Please, if needed, get your replacement diagphragms from Bob Crites. Bob tests them so you know they'll work. You can't get the real McCoys from EV anymore and the quality of the reproductions is spotty. The cheaper ones availble online might work, but they might not. Paying more to Bob and getting one that WILL work is worth it. Paying less and doing it twice is a false weconomy. Or, you might consider a pair of Bob's CT125s. Even with open voice coils, your K-77s have value and could be sold to offset the cost of CT125s. Some here prefer them to the K-77 (T-35) others prefer the K-77. YMMV. In any case, get them working and enjoy them. OBTW, welcome!
  13. Buttons and Bows by Dinah Shore Later parodied as Boutons and Bose, I think by Weird Al.
  14. As Amazon likes to do, if you liked the Rolling Stone article, you might also like this.
  15. This photo was also part of the article. I have a recollection of the article's author explaining elsewhere how he came to own the La Scalas mentioned in the article. It's my recollection he bought them from Steve Miller, the Fly Like An Eagle, Steve Miller. On the other hand, I could be thinking of another article with a different author.
  16. Chris- That's a great article. The pdf you posted is much easier to read than the version I have (each page as a jpg). Thanks for sharing it. You might like to see the cover of the Rolling Stone from which the article is taken.
  17. The gas company was replacing a main in the street. Mistakes were made, a man died, people have been fired, lawsuits abound. Natural gas is extremely powerful. For Dan's three daughters, the loss is extreme and not to be diminished. Nonetheless, the Indy tragedy caused by greed and the intentional disregard for John "Dion" and Jennifer Longworth is somehow more disturbing than the carelessness of a gas company crew.
  18. Daniel Maczynski, a 58 yo retired autoworker and father of three daughters, was the only fatality in the Royal Oak, MI explosion (no word on the dog).
  19. Those aren't Bose, they're hair Klipsch.
