  1. how would I know if the caps need to be replaced?

Use a calendar. They should be replaced

and do you mean the capacitors on the cross over . . . ?

Yes. Contact Bob Crites, BEC on this forum.

They look good, but just enjoy them for a few months before "improving" them. You'll better appreciate the change that fresh capacitors in the crossovers will bring.

  2. Yesterday I fulfilled a lifelong dream of visiting the site of the Woodstock Concert, along with the museum. I thought I'd share some photos I took with you all...

Along the way I stopped at the Woodstock Harley-Davidson dealership in Kingston, NY. Here's a few pics from there:

Which one is the vintage Harley?

  3. If any good is to come of this, it will be that responsible adults should now be alert to the danger of adults being left alone with young children.

In the 70s I taught driver education in a high school (as well as being an assistant wrestling coach). I would NEVER be alone with one student, male or female, in a car. It was best for everyone that a "witness" always be present. The policy was for the protection of students and teachers alike.

That was more than 4 decades ago. The students were 15 - 17 years old. Responsible adults, i.e., Paterno, Mrs. Sandusky, etc. should have recognized the impropriety of Jerry's behavior with adolescents. He was at best a fool to be alone with children; at worst a pedopohile.

FWIW I disagree with those calling for NCAA punishment of the school. PSU failed the children and is being punished. To stop the football program would punish athletes who are not responsible. Athletes in non-revenue sports (basketball might not generate revenue at PSU [;)]) would suffer from the loss of football revenue. The whole econmomy of Happy Valley would suffer.

Jerry rubbed people the wrong way . . . so to speak, but he's been brought to justice. Let the school divorce itself from Joe Pa and move on.

The Freeh report is available online. Of the 267 pages, more than half are footnotes, exhibits, etc. The emails and Joe Pa's handwritten notes are damning.

  4. It is possible to help a stranger get a fair price while also alerting forum members to something of interest. The seller realized more than the $800 offer from a local dealer and forum member Tom Kuisis was thrilled to drive from Pittsburgh to Detroit to collect them.

  5. The suggestions of Heresy, Dynaco A25s, etc. are good ones.

Your original comment about a single driver Lowther (a budget buster) makes me think you might enjoy something along the lines of Tekton 4.1 (now discontinued). This forum's Mdeneen, and others, have raved about the Fostex based single driver speakers. See http://forums.klipsch.com/forums/p/125388/1267594.aspx#1267594 and/or http://forums.klipsch.com/forums/t/87559.aspx?PageIndex=1

While I'm still waiting to find used FE103s, I have experience with Radio Shack 40-1197s (similar to FE103) in the Fostex designed rear loaded horn and in a small bass reflex enclosure like the Tekton 4.1 (both using notch filters). In addition to a small footprint and small cost, the single driver concept produces phenomenal midrange and imaging. For many, the compromises regarding the extremes (treble and bass) are more than compensated by the midrange and imaging from a single driver with no crossover. Female vocals are excellent; almost spooky.

Even though I listen most often via the near field experience of computer speakers; most 2 channel is through the 40-1197 single drivers. Every now and then I switch to Heresy, Cornwall, La Scala, etc. to be reminded of the limitations of single drivers. Nonetheless, they might answer your space and budget constraints. YMMV.

Best wishes in your sale and search. Please let us know what you decide.

  6. In college days (late 60s) I "bought" a system, using a housemate's money, consisting of a Pioneer receiver, Dual changer and Dynaco A25 speakers.

With my first teaching job in 74, I bought Bose 901s, Dynaco 400, Dynaco pre-amp, Dynaco tuner, AR-XB turntable (?Shure cartridge) and Sony 161-SD cassette player.

In 76, while in grad school, I bought 4 Speakerlab SKhorns, another Dynaco 400, a pair of Technics direct-drive turntables (Stanton cartridges) and a Meteor mixer/pre-amp to use in a mobile DJ Business. The SKhorns eventually led me to Klipsch.

  7. The question seems somewhat loaded. Nonetheless, the best answer appears to be, it depends.

The issues presented to a DIYer are different from those confronted by a manufacturer. A DIYer is less concerned with small cost differences or factors that contribute to ease of repetitive commercial production. In a commercial setting, a small cost increase multiplied over an entire production run could mean the difference between commercial success or failure.

The one time I met PWK we briefly discussed the Speakerlab SKhorn. PWK spoke disparagingly about Speakerlab's use of MDF (its inability to take edge screws) and non-metal squawker horns. It’s worth noting that post PWK Klipschorns use MDF and composite squawker horns. That doesn’t make current production Klipschorns inferior to older versions, but different. They are produced to the economic conditions of today’s market.

A DIY enthusiast is not similarly constrained. MDF and so-called Baltic plywood each has strengths and limitations. Each could be the correct choice for specific projects. The “best” choice depends upon each individual’s unique situation, such as budget, tools available, skill level, intended use, etc. The cost should not be a deterrent.

Under most circumstances, I would use the highest quality void free plywood available. A complex enclosure, such as the Klipschorn bass bin, with numerous angle cuts would scare me away from the weight and screw holding issues with MDF.

That said I’m getting ready to build small simple bass reflex enclosures for single drivers (RS 40-1197 or FE103) from MDF. The weight and relative acoustical deadness of MDF are advantages. The glued construction makes the screw holding issue irrelevant. Cost is not important.

    YMMV
