  1. The side grilles are easily removable also.
  2. <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Gary- My take on your request was that forum members were asked to not bid early, which only serves to drive up the price. If that is what you intended, then I have no problem with that request. It NEVER makes sense to bid on eBay before the final seconds, with or without the aid of a sniping service. Any bid before the closing seconds only drives up the price, which benefits sellers but not potential buyers. The format used by eBay is more like a silent auction, rather than a real-time auction. On the other hand, if you were requesting that forum members curb their interest and not place any bid on an item that they would like to own, then I disagree with the propriety of that request. Everyone has a right to indicate to an eBay seller what an item is worth to him/her, as in a silent auction. It's not fair to the seller or to other potential buyers to request that interested persons sit on their hands and not make good faith offers to the seller. It could be (and has been) argued that bid sniping is unfair, especially to sellers; I disagree. Seller's, who voluntarily select eBay as the vehicle to sell their items, have the right to set reserves, below which the items will not be sold. Every bidder (including your friend) has the right to place bids that indicate what the items are worth to her/him. I have not yet heard a persuasive argument in favor of placing bids prior to the closing seconds of the "auction." If my take on your request is wrong, then I disagree. While its laudable and honorable to help a friend get a good deal, IMHO it must be done in a way that is as fair to all as is humanly possible. You know . . ."Do unto others .. " If you wouldnt want it done to you, then dont do it to someone else.
  3. Myhamish- It looks like our paths have crossed several times.
  4. Sophia is good hands, earthly and spiritual.
  5. I agree with Jeff. There are better ways to use time, money and plywood, but others have felt the same way about my projects. Do what will bring you enjoyment. The article posted by BEC and referred to by Jeff is attached (see page 6). Edgar%20Interview%20of%20PWK[1].pdf
  6. You won't be able to see to drive if you transport them lying face down . . . oh; you mean the speakers would be lying face down. Seriously, face down for the bass bins is best. The weight of the woofers is supported by the motorboards, rather than the bolts. I would remove the tops (a couple of wing nuts) and allow them to travel in their normal orientation; thus avoiding concern about leaking capacitors. Irrespective of leaking caps, I agree with Rick. At a minimum, the caps in the networks should be replaced. I suggest just new caps to establish a baseline. Contact BEC. More exotic networks could follow.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> Slamming on the brakes to avoid an idiot is a real concern. Fortunately, when I was collecting a pair of Cornwalls, they were well padded and stowed against the bulkhead in the van so that they did not move forward when I had to lock up the binders to avoid a sudden maneuver by a signal-challenged lane-changer.
  7. Heathkit 2-ways, 12" bass reflex with cone tweeter, circa 1964, still used by eccentric sister; Dynaco A-25s, circa 1970; Bose 901s, circa 1974; DIY Webb TLS (KEF B139 woofers, KEF B110 mids, KEF T27 tweeters and Celestion-Ditton super-tweeters; built from plans in SpeakerBuilder), circa 1976; Speakerlab SKhorns (four used in mobile DJ business), circa 1976; DIY BBC LS3/5A clones (used KEF B110s & T27s from Webb TLS with Falcon Acoustics networks), circa 1982, still used as primaries in HT; DIY TL subs with KEF B139s from Webb TLS in long transmission line enclosures, circa 1982, still in use in HT; Heresies (80s vintage), circa 2004, (eBay) still in use; Cornwalls (80s vintage), circa 2005, (eBay); DIY single driver rear-horns from Fostex FE-103 plans using various drivers, but primarily using Radio Shack 40-1197s (90s ? vintage), circa 2005, still in use; La Scalas (70s vintage), circa 2005, restored and sold to high school, still in use in bandroom; and Next “Klipsch” type speakers will be DIY fully horn-loaded along lines of Jubilee and/or Corn-Scala variants; unlikely to use any Klipsch drivers or horns, with possible exception of bass bins and/or K33s.
  8. ELECTRO-VOICE CARDINAL IV SPEAKERS EV SP-15 T-350 828HF IMHO an exaggerated claim and inflated BIN price.
  9. Support for Pauln's assertion regarding the history of the La Scala as designed by PWK to reproduce music can be found at page 6 of the Bruce Edgar interview of PWK attached here and previously posted by BEC. The pejorative designation of PA Speaker is misplaced. If La Scalas are PA speakers, so are Altec VOT and every other speaker used to provide large amounts of high db low distortion sound in large spaces such as theaters, auditoriums and nightclubs.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> For every truly high fidelity speaker, audio or PA, there are many more that merely make noise. Audiophools, who have a knee-jerk dislike of horns, love to refer to all Klipsch speakers as PA speakers. It would be nice if that urban myth were not perpetuated here. 10. If you reply to these unsolicited contacts you could jeopardize your eBay account, your email and /or your computer. If you ignore them you can't be scammed.
  11. 500 ft 12 gauge copper $60 at Home Depot. I choose to spend money on things other than wire. The electrons don't know the difference. Why spoil them? The electrons have to to flow through steel chasssis and terminals, copper voice coils, etc., irrespective of what you use instead of zip cord as speaker cables.
  12. Please go to page 6 of the attached interview of PWK by Bruce Edgar (previously posted by BEC). The La Scala was NOT designed to be a PA speaker. It was designed to play music. Nevertheless, PWK was surprised (rather than "mift" or miffed) that people used them as primary speakers. To PWK's way of thinking, the Klipschorn was the only primary speaker that Klipsch built. Heresy, Cornwall, La Scala and Belle were intended as center speakers between two Klipschorns. Edgar%20Interview%20of%20PWK[1].pdf
  13. Dana likes silver, so why not try the Lone Ranger's business cards (silver bullets); that would be some high caliber speaker wire.
  14. It doesn't look like the plaintiff left money on the table. Jeff said that plaintiff's demand was $800K, but he didn't indicate that defendant made any offer, but most judges would require some settlement offer. Jeff, what was the bid and ask, if you don't mind sharing?
  15. But what if we used Clayton Moore's silver coat hangers?
  16. Fini- That makes more sense. Notwithstanding your well known sense of humor, I had no clue about the "joke" to which you referred. I was thinking it must me some carpenter inside joke.
  17. My observation was not meant as a criticism of the Jefferson quote, but merely to point out that Jefferson, apparently, did not practice what he preached. I've got no quarrel with the substance of Jefferson's quote regarding labor or Lincoln's quoted commments regarding labor and capital. I do question the point of including them as part of an audio forum. I must be dense. It didn't occur to me that Keith might be suggesting that I was a "Typical Republican;" I thought he was referring to Jefferson.
  18. This quote would have more validity were it not attributed to a man who "owned" other men and women in the form of slaves.
  19. Heresy-<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> After reading the PWK biography (great story, bit poorly written and edited) and hearing PWK speak, its my understanding that a local minister asked PWK to design a speaker to be used over the proscenium (arched doorway) and that PWK said to place a speaker in such a location , rather than in a corner, would be heresy. PWKs irreverent sense of humor quickly caused him to see the beauty of using that name for a speaker intended for a church. BTW, the Indy car simulator at the ESPN Zone at <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Disneyland uses Heresies. La Scala- PWK learned to love opera after Belle took him to the La Scala opera in Milan, Italy. He said that live opera made the hairs on the back of his neck stand up. The speaker is named for the opera house, notwithstanding the fact that it was designed for Rockefellers gubernatorial campaign.
  20. In a cage in Leeds with no access to a computer.
  21. Thanks for the reply and the suggestion. It never made it into this thread, but other threads detailed the purchase and restoration of a pair of La Scalas. They're now in place and doing the job quite well.
  22. The quick amd temporary fix was to wedge wooden rods in the 3" gaps between the inside of the side panels and the straight edges of the dog houses before the "roof" begins. The band director professed to hearing a difference. Unless he again claims to hear buzzing, I'll eventually fashion more permanent braces. FWIW, I stll think the primary problem is poor recordings. If it sounds bad at low volume, it aint going to sound better at high volume. Nevertheless, there was a weird sound when tapping one side panel, which is now absent, and the braces can't hurt.
