  1. The 430s and 630 were ~$75 including shipping. The 730 was $160 including shipping. It was worth it (see eBay H/K 730 truly "Near Mint" ). The 430s are a much better deal. There is not much practical difference between 25 wpc (430) and 40 wpc (730). The 430 will play Klipsch at ear bleed levels. To get twice the volume would take 10 x the power. eBay sends me an email whenever one is listed (it also searches misspelled "Harmon"). Then I use EZ Sniper to automatically place a bid on those that look promising. I'm usually outbid, but you never know when you'll get lucky.
  2. Ive purchased four vintage H/K receivers on eBay; two 430s, one 730 and one 630. Three of the four are gems, the 630 was a stinker. The seller refunded the purchase price, including shipping, but it cost me $35 to ship it back.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> Do not buy a 630 that looks like it might be the one in the link below recycled. HARMON KARDON 630 TWIN POWER RECIEVER AMPLIFIER Notwithstanding the glowing description, it was junk. One of the jumpers between the pre and amp was missing. It was filthy. The channel with the jumper barely played. The jumper-less channel sounded better (when the jumper was replaced). The walnut case was a mess and held on by two bent screws. I couldnt bring myself to send it back with the case flopping, so I went to the real hardware store (wooden floors) and bought four metric machine screws to properly attach the case. Today, two days after I put the junk 630 in the care of UPS, I received the 430 in the link below. Harman Kardon 430 Twin-Powered AM/FM Receiver It works and looks great. As I type, Im listening to the Monk/Coltrane Carnegie Hall lost concert CD. My Radio Shack/Fostex single driver rear horn speakers never sounded better. Next Ill try it with La Scalas. I should've known when the 630 seller couldn't spell Harman. Beware of anything from nwdream, especially any re-listed H/K630. On the whole my experiences with eBay have been positive, but its always a gamble.
  3. Tubby bass from Khorn? Few would agree. You should accept Pete's kind offer. You might consider taking your receiver, if that's practical. In any case, you'll be able to audition Khorns and Cornwalls. When I used four Speakerlab SKhorns (Khorn clones) in a mobile DJ business, people thought there was a live drummer. Using false corners, the bass was tight, never tubby. I've owned Khorns, Cornwalls, Heresy and La Scalas (no experience with non-Heritage Klipsch). Each has its strengths and limitations. Assuming other things are equal (which they never are), of stock Klipsch Heritage; Heresy is great, La Scala is better, Cornwall is better still and Khorn is best. I too have heard few sub-woofers that I liked. IMHO, the integration of a direct radiator subwoofer with horn-loaded speakers is extremely problematic. I prefer the tight fast, albeit limited, bass of La Scalas alone to La Scalas with poor augmentation by sub. I do not consider La Scalas to be suitable for most home installations. <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Cornwall, IMHO, offers the best compromise of size, cost and performance among stock Klipsch. Again, call Chicago Pete and go listen to Khorns and Cornwalls.
  4. I agree with Amy. Better than diet Rock Star!
  5. He was VERY funny. Ill never forget the first time I saw a young skinny RP on Ed Sullivan doing his impression of the first man on the sun.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> If only he was as happy as he was funny. He seemed to have come to terms with life recently, notwithstanding MS and accidental self-immolation. He even had a sense of humor about his fiery accident, which he attributed to dunking a cookie in a mixture of whole milk and 2%, which then exploded in his face.
  6. He's Belgian Michael. Remember, he went through with the deal, he didn't waffle. I was suspicious too when Belgium and local agents were mentioned. Nevertheless, it all went smoothly. I made it clear; no checks, no money orders, no PayPal. I figured if his local agent wouldn't trust him for $150, why should I? It was cash and carry ONLY. I didn't want to get into a dispute resolution through PayPal, if a shipping problem developed. I got the cash and waved good bye. Case closed.
  7. You're correct. The train sounds are from the No. 1225 Pere Marquette steam locomotive that was for years parked In East Lansing on the MSU campus near the tennis courts. A few years back its long restoration was completed. It's now stationed in Owosso, Michigan and pulls excursion trains. The site is http://www.mstrp.com/events.html. There was a feature on NPR before the film was released about how the 1225 was recorded for the film. It's a coincidence that the locomotive recorded to give the Polar Express its voice has as its number,1225, a form of which, 12/25, is also a desigation for the date of Christmas. 8. The kids and the instructor think the speakers are awesome. They've enjoyed eveything from The 1812 Overture's cannon shots, Dark Side of The Moon and Take Five. Now that he let me position them so the they are angled down toward the listening area, they sound fantastic. Even in that large space they are loud and clear. The kids are impressed more by LOUD than clear.
  9. Michael, What did PWK use or what does BEC use? One of the answers to those questions could be your answer. If you were doing a single pair, then the additional cost for something boutique, that some people feel sound better, would not be a big deal. PWK selected, and BEC selects, caps based on performance, quality and value.
  10. FWIW I agree with Bob Crites. Using a capacitor kit that Bob supplied, the La Scalas I rebuilt for the high school now sound fantastic. Bob gave the same capacitors to his friend Lynn Marshall, the originator of this thread. Unfortunately, Lynn never had an opportunity to put them into service. Since then, this thread has generated more heat than light. I've always avoided discussing politics and religion with strangers, now I guess capcaitors should be added to that list.
  11. It's probably a lost cause, but if anyone knows a simple solution, please share it.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> The VCR part of our circa 1998 Philips Model CCZ092AT02, 9" AC/DC TV/VCR Combo seems to have died. That wouldn't be a problem if the TV would continue to work alone. Instead, even with no tape in the VCR, you can hear a motor running and the tape speed is displayed on the screen. After approximately 10 seconds, the TV turns itself off. Pushing the stop, eject, etc. buttons does nothing. I opened it up, but it wasnt obvious how to disable the VCR without also disabling the TV. Have any suggestions, other than dropping it from a ten story building? Im not optimistic about fixing it, but you never know the depth of the collective experience on this forum until you ask. Its not worth paying a diagnostic fee, and theres no harm in attempting a VCR-ectomy.
  12. Michael, take a deep breath and and remember the commecials that promise that things should stay in Las Vegas.
  13. Glenn, My gratitude to you and your wife for a very pleasant evening. Michael Colter was right; your home theater is phenomenal. Those cannon shots from Master and Commander are still reverberating in my head. Now I've got to figure a way to characterize the purchase of an HD HT as a business expense. Glenn you have the patience of Job. There is no way that I could let those new Heresy speakers stay in the boxes unplayed for months. Had I known, I'd have brought my backup H/K 630 and we could've rocked the neighborhood. We could've listened to them from your garage while we were dining at Dunleavey's. I look forward to our next meeting. Let me know the next time you go to Almas Hi-Fi, The Grammaphone or are in or around Birmingham for any reason. It was an evening to remember.
  14. The prior lisitng obviously did not result in the sale of this unusual hybrid. Lowther Klipschorn vintage Brociner cornerhorn Klipsch That one photo still reminds me of a kitchen appliance.
  15. The problems and name calling began with the thirteenth reply to Lynn's post. If the shoe fits . . . It's fitting that Lynn chose as his avatar a picture of Sam Clemens. I believe it was Mark Twain who said (paraphrasing), "Better to remain silent and risk being thought a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt."
  16. I have recently purchased H/K 430, 630 and 730 through eBay, each for under $200 delivered. Can you guess what I recommend?
  17. This thread was, at one time, serving as a tribute to Lynn Marshall. He would be embarrassed by what has taken place. Lynn NEVER stooped to name calling, and he could spell. Most important, he was not so insecure as to feel compelled to correct the spelling and grammar of others. But, if he had, he would have done so without unintentionally misspelling the attempted putdown.
  18. Now eBay indicates that the auction was ended as the item is no longer available.
  19. Michael and others, Be good to Klipschguy, as he was kind enough to send me a pair of Radio Shack drivers for a project and wouldn't accept payment. I still listen to them almost daily. Unfortunately, I know nothing about electric bass guitars. I do like Michael's advice. My son was looking for an electric guitar (not bass). We were advised to buy the best used guitar that he could afford. He disregarded that advice and bought a cheap new guitar, which he soon regretted. Eventually, he took my advice and bought a good used guitar, which he was later able to re-sell for what he had into it. The new guitar was a total loss.
  20. This might be just the thing for the Klipschophile on your list. KLIPSCH COOLER BAG!! Klipschorn Heresy Accessory! Is the seller a Forum member?
  21. He was clever and caring. We'll miss him.
  22. Lynn was concerned about the well being of fellow forum member, mdenen. The following thread started by lynnm demonstrates that: mdeneen Where the Hello Are You?? In addition to expressing his sincere concern, it includes an amusing tale of his experience in a Morgan +8. Further proof that Lynn is irreplaceble.
  23. This post was a test to see if the link to this old thread started by Lynnm would still work. It does. He was a class act. mdeneen Where the Hello Are You??
