Unfortunately, it rained all day yesterday. I wasn't able to get good outside pictures of the La Scalas. I was so rushed today that I didnt have time to take pictures before I had to get them to the school.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> Therefore, Ive posted the best after pictures that are available.

Michael- I have a large outdoor antenna in my attic that is many times better than any zip, folded dipole or magic indoor antenna. That enables me to get the local NPR stations (WDET Detroit & WUOM Ann Arbor) and CBC from Windsor, Ontario, Canada. I barely used the tuner on my H/K 430 before my son took it to college, so I have no experience. I haven't tried to tune the H/K 730 using other than the big antenna, so I can't offer any input there either. Eventually, the band director plans to try to test the ability of the H/K 730 to receive FM. That will be a challenge, as there are two floors of concrete and steel construction above the band room. They might be able to tap into a rooftop antenna or a cable signal. If we learn any secrets, we'll share them with you. If you figure it out, we'll profit from your efforts. Your suggestions are just the kind of input I'm seeking. The Floyd, Zeppelin, Dave Matthews & Tchaikovsky 1812 suggestions were already on my short list, but I had no clue what young people would recognize and appreciate. The pair of La Scalas ( see Four abused Lascalas need a good home - sold ) and the H/K 730 (see Re: eBay H/K 730 truly "Near Mint") that I got for the high school band (see Band Room System advice? ) are ready to rock. The band director is under thirty and the high school kids are . . . high school kids. What music would you select to showcase La Scalas to that crowd? Bob Crites suggested Classical Gas by Mannheim Steamroller and Maria Maria by Santana. The band had a Paul Simon theme to the half-time show this season, so I'll take a Paul Simon CD. I'll also have Take Five by Brubeck (there's a jazz band too). I was also thinking of the Beatles' Back in the U.S.S.R.; that jet plane landing intro at high volume would get their attention. But, do they know who the Beatles were, and do they know what the U.S.S.R was? Is there some current"music" that the kids would know and like that 's well recorded with varied instrumentation and tight percussion? WWPWKD?

Michael, No business has not been slow. I've not had a chance to catch my breath. You'll be amazed at the transformation in a week. It's still raining here. I'll take picture when it stops raining and I can move them out into the daylight.

They're done. I used weatherstripping. Worked like a charm. Photos tomorrow (of the end result, not the weatherstripping).

At 10:45 Pm I tightened the last screw and turned on the H/K 730. Magically, Dave Brubeck's piano was in our garage, as Take Five poured out of those black beauties. It's late, it's raining and I'm too tired to take and post photos. I'll post some pics tomorrow.

I suggested the school color thing or a color that would be less imposing than black.. The instructor wants black. And yes, color changes would add to the workload.

Still considering what to play at the initial unveiling. I have no clue about any current music that the kids might know and like. It's got to be something that's well recorded and has dynamics and punch. A kick drum would be nice. Any suggestions? The finish will be a lovely shade of semi-gloss black. Function over form.

In order to meet the original Monday deadline, I was substituting the existing T-35s and going to repair the K77s later. Now that the delivery date has been pushed back to Wednesday, I'll consider replacing the diaphragms in the K77s.

Michael, All is well. I always expected to invest way too much time. You know, "No good deed goes unpunished." The speakers were as expected. As the finished photos will show tomorrow, I went beyond what was necessary to make them functional and presentable. That was by choice. But routing out boards to seal the bottoms of the doghouses would be way too anal for the purposes of this project. If you haven't done so, check out the "four abused . . " thread again in General. The smiles on their little hormone ravaged faces will be reward enough.

Here is another photo of the progress. The cabinets now have more Bondo than an AMC Gremlin. Between the 1" holes in the top and sides (presumably where they were attached to the ceiling of the bar) and the delamination along the edges and corners, these would be a challenge to make ready for veneer. Fortunately, veneer is not in the plans. I'll post the finished photos tomorrow. They'll look fine from their perches above the instrument lockers. With the refurbished networks and new K33E woofers, they should be awesome sounding. The delivery date has been moved back to Wednesday; that takes away some of the pressure.

Don't misunderstand,. I admire your attention to detail. If these were for personal use, I'd consider a more elegant solution than weather stripping. But they're NOT! This is a pro bono project for the high school band. I've already invested way too much time. Weather stripping will be fine.

That's the kind of reinforcement I was looking for. Not only do I agree with Bob's comment about reducing the volume of the back chamber, there is no way in He77 I'm going to put that much effort into these relics.

I wish the ones I'm working on looked half as good. I'm curious to see the final results.

What are the collective recommendations for sealing the bottoms of Las Scalas around the doghouse? Im in the process of resurrecting two of Four abused Lascalas need a good home - sold . The sticky strip that was around the perimeter of the bottoms (visible as the dark line between the network and the T-35 in the attached photo) has been removed. My questions are:<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> What did Klipsch use originally; Should I again follow the perimeter of the rectangular bottom; And/or, should I seal closer to the opening of the doghouse; and Should I put screws through the bottom and into the walls of the doghouse (Id also use screws around the rectangular perimeter of the bottom? FYI these will not be moved around and it is unlikely that anyone will need to gain access to the woofers in the near future. Nevertheless, I want to seal the back chambers adequately while not making it difficult to gain access to the woofers in the future.

By Home Depot speaker wire, I assume reference is being made to wire with clear insulation. It would probably please Lynn Marshall to know that I've replaced all of the 18 gauge zip cord that Klipsch put in the La Scalas Im resurrecting (see Four abused Lascalas need a good home - sold ) with black 14 gauge zip cord from Home Depot. He would be pleased because zip was replaced with more zip, not because anything was wrong with what Klipsch supplied.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /> Most of the decades old Klipsch zip was fine and couldve been re-used. Nevertheless, it seemed prudent to put in fresh wire and theres no harm in going slightly larger. I expect that the vinyl clad 100% copper HD zip will work fine for years to come. In a nod to Lynnm, I insisted that only egalitarian electrons be supplied. None of those snooty electrons that refuse to travel on anything less than boutique cables need apply. What happens to them when they get to the small gauge plebian copper wire in the networks and voice coils? Do they just refuse to go forward? Do they join the resistance?
