  1. Thanks for the replies, but I already have an older Marantz that I'm using for the 2-channel/music that I'm happy with (see first post/question). I want to add an AVR to the mix for the 25% approx. of the time I'm using this system to watch a movie or xbox games. Thanks for the suggestion on the speaker selector, but couldn't I just get an AVR and use the pre-outs to run the older Marantz I'm using for 2-channel?
  2. Thanks. Two reasons, really. 1. Wanting to try something different in the other system. 2. price. I'm looking at refurb, and the T748 can be had for around $420, while another Marantz in the 60xx line runs in the $750 (give or take) range. When I say double duty -- I guess that needs to be clarified a bit because I'm looking to add just an AVR to my already existing 2-channel Marantz PM-700AV. So the Chorus II's are pulling double duty, but I'm looking to add just an AVR to the 2-channel integrated amp I already have. Sorry for the confusion.
  3. Hi---I have a secondary system in my basement with Chorus ii for mains. For the 2-channel part, I have a Marantz PM-700AV (circa 1990) that I bought new in 1991 that I'm pleased with when listening to vinyl and CD's. I'd say this system is 75% 2-channel, and well the question relates to the other 25% movies/video games. Right now, I have a lower end Yamaha (5810 I think) and I'm switching the speaker cables back and forth because it doesn't have any pre-outs. I'm looking to simplify things, but considering the fact that this is maybe 25% HT, I don't want to spend a lot. Budget is likely about $500 max. My thoughts so far --- I have a Marantz SR6012 on my other system I'm pretty happy with (so another Marantz is an option) but maybe trying something new. The NAD T748 looks attractive to me. Any thoughts or other suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!
  4. I'm not in FL or anywhere close, but curiously looked at this ad. The pics seem a bit strange, and a reverse image search on Google shows the pic used in the ad in numerous other ads/sites. I'd proceed with caution on this one. Not saying don't look into if you're interested, but if someone doesn't post actual pictures in their ad (especially in this day and age), I'd be suspect.
  5. Thanks. Excuse my technological ignorance, when you say windows 7 server, what specifically am I looking for? Are you talking about an older PC or laptop running windows 7, or something entirely different?
  6. Thanks for the responses. Gives me some things to think about and research more. Follow-up --- after I posted, I was tweaking around with the laptop where the FLAC files are ultimately stored, and via windows media player (win 10) shared the folder on the network. From the HEOS app on my phone, it showed the Toshiba laptop, and I was able to navigate to the FLAC files on the music folder on the laptop, and then play them via the marantz. So essentially what JefDC suggests but without JRiver Media Center. I thought this was a great solution/workaround to the touchiness of the front usb drive, and the sound seemed great, until the laptop went into hibernate. I thought this would be a simple re-start (and changing the laptop settings to never hibernate). When I restarted everything, now the marantz won't find ANY wireless networks. I'm going to try a factory reset tonight and see if that restores the wifi, then go from there. I suppose perhaps I could also try loading the FLAC files on an EHD and plugging that into the USB port in the front. Maybe that might be more stable than the thumbdrives I was using before. Since I'm new to all of this, I appreciate the feedback/suggestions.
  7. I've got a Marantz SR6012. I posted awhile ago about some issues with FLAC file playback via the USB port on the front. The issue seemed resolved via the HEOS app on my phone, but now today, I'm getting no playback from various USB devices, but when I play a few test files from my phone, it works. So I'm thinking the USB drive on the Marantz might be touchy or in need of service. My question, however, is more of the nature of is there a better method to store and playback my FLAC collection, as opposed to the USB method. I'm all for low (or no) cost. Any suggestions appreciated.
  8. Thanks for the additional tips! I emailed (no phone in the ad), and didn't hear back yet. Maybe he already sold it. I appreciate the advice! Thank you!
  9. Hands down, Here Comes Fatty Claus. Thanks, Dad (my Dad died last year) for introducing me to this nonsense. Warning: foul language in this link:
  10. Thanks for the tips. I'll see if I can contact the seller and have a listen.
  11. Hey Jimjimbo --- don't know what it is. That was the description above the photo. I'm in Nebraska. Lincoln.
  12. Hi -- plethora of info. here and I admit I'm just getting started. As the other thread starter mentioned, I've also been considering a tube amp, "for the heck of it". Sounds like a build kit might be a rewarding project to try, but like the other poster, I don't want to break the bank and my soldering skills are rudimentary at best. At any rate, I found a tube amp local to me (about 20 minutes away) but don't really know what the specs mean, or if this is a decent deal, or what questions to ask. Can someone offer input? Guy is asking $275. Likely this would be paired with Chorus II's. Thanks! Single Ended Kt88/6550 Stereo Amp. Has Great sound well built with Japanese Transformers. Upgraded Sound Capacitors (jantzen superior) Comes with new style Gold Lion Kt88.
  13. No affiliation. Saw this on Goodwill site. Looks like oak, grills look a little rough. Might be worth looking into if you are in the area. https://www.shopgoodwill.com/Item/60735810
  14. Hey WillyL, and welcome. Slightly different, but I've owned KG2's for 33 years and this summer purchased Forte III's. In my experience, it was #1 for sure. No doubt. My kG2's, however, didn't have any crites mods. Originally, I ran a Yamaha TSR-5810 with the Forte III's, and liked the simplicity of the Yamaha and thought they sounded great. I recently switched to a Marantz 6012, and while I think that was an improvement on the sound --- the Marantz seems to run quite a bit cooler, the Marantz seems to have more features and is a bit more complicated (for me at least) to figure out. Good luck. @MetropolisLakeOutfitters helped me out since I swapped out the lambswool grills with the Cherry finish.
  15. Thanks! Did see that -- I'll take another look.
  16. Anyone using any of these? Experience/recommendations (or non-recommendations)? I'm kinda sorta considering adding an integrated amp to my chorus ii's or forte iii's for dedicated 2-channel. I'm looking at either the MF M2si (76 WPC) or the MF M5si (150 WPC). Looks like with the M2si I'd have to add a phono stage (also recommendations?), but the lower price (compared to the 5si) would likely be worth it with money to spare. Of course, no local dealers to listen to in advance. I think both of these have a home theater bypass, which would be a +. Also taking recommendations for something else I might want to look at if not MF. Thanks in advance!
  17. Side 4 of the Smiths Louder Than Bombs LP -- or anything by Joy Division. Dead Can Dance -- Host of Seraphim (from Baraka): Krzysztof Penderecki - Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima (Twin Peaks S3):
  18. My experience - yours may differ of course --- The previous owner of my chorus II's added two washers (guessing pursuant to Moray's instructions) to the passive. When I took possession, maybe with the moving around, the weight/washers had fallen off. I listened to them for a few weeks before opening them up to send the crossovers to Crites for recap. During the quick turnaround time on the crossovers, I re-epoxied the fallen washers back onto the passive. It may be anecdotal, but my experience was an improvement in the bass response when the washers/weights were on, versus when they were off. The previous owner had carefully weighed the washers, to achieve the 2.5 ounce sweet spot. If one wanted to conduct more of an a/b test before permanently epoxying them on, I suppose you could use duct tape or something less permanent to test first.
  19. Thanks for all the suggestions. For future reference, when playing back from the USB, there is no on screen display in pure direct mode, so I started using the HEOS app on my phone -- waaaayyyyy easier to navigate the FLAC content of the USB, and no error code. Since even when I was getting the onscreen error code it disappeared and played fine, I'll likely just use the HEOS app from now on, and call it good. Spend more time ripping more FLAC files instead of messing with this.
  20. Hi --- I'm new to FLAC files, but have been using exact audio copy and it seems to be working well. Recently, I got a Marantz SR6012 (refurb). When I play a FLAC file from the USB port in the front, things play OK, and it moves thru the sequence (or random play), but at the start of virtually every song, I get an error message that says "Unable to play media". This comes up while it is playing the media, then goes away. More of an annoyance, but I wonder if anyone else had a similar issue, or can make a recommendation for something to get rid of the error. I've used a Kingston USB, as well as some cheaper USB's I have around and the USB drives don't seem to matter. Thanks.
  21. Hi Mr. Wongburger --- A few months ago, I got a pair of Chorus II's for $600. I'm in the midwest. They are black, but in good shape with only minimal light marks that are not noticeable at all after I used rejuvenating oil on them. I sent the crossovers to Bob Crites for recap, and replaced the tweeter diaphragms (so with the mods, I have a bit over $800 in). At first, I wasn't a fan of the black grills and intended to either replace of make my own replacement grills. I think it'd be real easy to do on your own, with a sheet of 1/4" plywood or something else the same thickness, to make the frame, then it's basically just re-upholstering the front. I got some fabric from JoAnn's fabric that I was intending to experiment with, but just haven't had the time yet. You might need someone to provide the grill dimensions off the chorus II's, and pictures of the general layout and location of the magnets. PM me if you want me to measure mine. The new grills wouldn't have badges so if that's an issue, you'd have to look into also. Good luck.

For some crazy reason, we've come to expect and accept high prices in the U.S., politics aside. Vox summarized these in 15 easy to read charts, showing how insane things are: https://www.vox.com/cards/health-prices
  23. I have F3's and the RC64iii. It's been working pretty well, but to me it seems very very massive and heavy. Before the RC-64iii, I tried some I had around that yes, are mismatched but to me worked well enough -- maybe not quite as good as the RC-64iii, but the price was right on the others. KV-2 and KG2.2, while not perfect matches seemed pragmatic enough for me (I preferred the KG2.2 over the KV-2), but i do have a smaller room. The RC-64iii pairs well in my experience with the F3 and would be a decent choice. You may want to look at the depth of the RC-64iii also and consider that. It's an extra couple of inches deeper than the F3, and due to the weight, you'd either likely have to get a beefier wall shelf, or more ideally, a stand to put it on due to its weight.
  24. FYI - the body filler isn't used during the tuning -- you have to be careful not to cut too far. The body filler I use is after I cut the tank in half (well, less than half), and weld it back together to make a saucer with a lower profile. Once I grind down the welds, I use bondo to fill the void between the top and bottom halves, and smooth it out. I imagine that if you didn't have a welder, you could use JB weld, epoxy, or something else to hold the two halves together. The tank handles and feet are cut off, ground down smooth, and sanded before welding.
