  1. My technical knowledge isn't sufficient enough to explain why it could happen but it is possible to fry speaker drivers. I do not know how sensitive the tweeters are on the 2.2s but it is possible that a previous owner did something, like playing them too loud, that killed both tweeters. Diagnosing if you have bad tweeters can easily be checked with a multimeter once you have disconnected them from the crossover network.
  2. I am not surprised you heard a difference. It is entirely possible that if you had replaced the Onkyo with a Sony that you would have also noticed some difference. Each component in the signal chain can have an effect on the final sound. The effect could be so small as to not be noticeable or so large that it completely changes the sound. I am assuming you want to move the Cambridge to a different room entirely? I ask because I see it has two sets of outputs. Unfortunately, I think you are just experiencing the difference in synergy between two pieces of gear and I don't know if there is anything you can do to make the OSD or Onkyo sound as good at the Cambridge.
  3. For what it is worth, here is what Cornwall's look like sitting about 6" off the back wall. The wall they are on is about 14 feet wide (they are centered on the wall) and that is a 55" screen on the one on the left (some day I will get around to getting it on the wall mount). I often listen at low levels and they perform well. I am sure that Cornwalls or Fortes can sound fine 4-6" off the wall. That is not to say that they wouldn't sound better with more space behind them. The Cornwall's would likely perform better fully against the wall since they are front ported. As already mentioned, the Fortes have a radiator on the back and you will want a some nominal amount of clearance so you don't hamstring them. If you haven't already, I would encourage you to make it a point to listen to a Forte or Cornwall before taking the dive. I bet they are going to sound quite a bit different than your Infinitys. You asked about what to look for in used speakers and I would say it depends a lot on which version you are looking at. There is a significant price difference between the original Forte and Forte IV. However, it is also my understanding that there are also noticeable improvements between most generations. If you are looking at Forte I/II, it is not uncommon to find them with modifications, especially Crite's tweeters, but I wouldn't say that it is typical. As a DIY person, the common modifications to the I/II's are well documented, easy to perform, and usually reported to generate notable improvements. If you are looking into III or IV, I would guess the majority of them will be stock.
  4. Also consider that even if changing the wire impacts speaker performance, the improvements to sound from better room acoustics may be much greater than any losses from longer wire. I have often read that the listening environment is the most overlooked place where people can improve their system. If changing the orientation of your speakers creates an immediate, noticeable improvement, I would bet that the benefits will outweigh any deterioration due to cable length. Good Luck!
  5. A pair of Eminence Kappalite 3015LF-4 in new condition. These are the 4 ohm version that have been discontinued. $300 plus shipping. I mostly lurk here so if you are looking for some history on me, you can check my history on AK (natertots). edit: I may now have enough postings here to receive PMs.
  6. What is the correct OEM replacement woofer for a first generation Cornwall? I spent a few minutes searching and think the replacement is correct, but I want to be sure. I am early in my audio hobby and just picked up a pair of Cornwall’s that are in rough shape. The owner told me he had one of the woofers “professionally” replaced. I probably should have done more inspection but at $400 I took a gamble and bought them. When I got them apart I found the woofers are labeled: K-33 K-33-P Follow up question, should I consider finding a matching woofer? Thanks!
