  1. Man, that Santos is killer. Did you do that? Striking Belle if there ever was one. DO you have matching Khorns?
  2. I could be tempted to build another set of Corn cabs. I'm in Az so on the same side of the country. Do you already have all components? crossovers? Do you want nicely finished veneer or Birch plywood decorator style? NorCal is not all that far.
  3. >>> Still looking out for a McIntosh MEN220 to use in two channel. another pile of silicone crap between you and your music. Less is more. I'm pretty happy with my home built A nets. I liked my home built original design ALKs too. Somebody offered me too much money for them, they're gone. When I went to build new to replace them I decided to go with the KISS approach. Since I don't abuse my equipment or ears I don't need the tweeter protection and since I don't run low power SET I don't need the constant impedance, so A I have. AFAIC, simple is good. Good to see you Dean. Hope you are well. Thanks for being nice to me when I first showed up here, I've gotten a hell of a lot of enjoyment our of my stuff over the years. Still have my HF-81 and '60 K-horns along with the Homebuilt LS and Belle.
  4. I still have a few of the older style pie slice emblems on hand. These were created in a forum project many years ago. You'll like the price, they're free. You just have to send me enough to buy a small USPS Priority mail box. I think I even still have a few that already have the gold leaf applied. Let me know via PM if you're interested.,
  5. I bought my Hereseys from a licensed dealer in 1977. They had about 20 stacked two high in a row in the back room. They pulled the first stack of two off the row with a two-wheeler and loaded them into my pickup. they're not consecutive, about 6 numbers apart. Nobody cared then, I still don't care now. It's meaningless and will always be be such. However, it does give people selling stuff something to blather about.
  6. I had a pair of Fortes here for a couple weeks. Not really comparable to LS or Belles (I have/had both) at all. I prefer the horn-loaded bass completely. everything sounds flabby after LS/Belle/Khorn. I have no idea why Corns do so well, they don't have the flabby bass deal at all. For me anyway.
  7. Had my 76 Corns hooked up to an hot-rodded EICO HF-81, a museum piece Scott with all Telefunken tubes and my older Nakamichi 100W/channel AV amp. Not hard at all to say they sounded better with either of the tube amps than the Nak. That Nak is from before Nak went to pieces with their "lifestyle" junk. If I had the corns back I'd run the EICO. It would make about 14 watts/channel but I never needed to go over half-way on the volume dial. The Corns were sitting just inside a pair of 1960 Khorns on a 14 ft wall. Hardly optimal. I also have LS but in another room. for your stated music preferences I'd get the Corns and a decent tube amp, something that will make 20-25 watts/channel. I wouldn't worry much about the volume, this setup will permanently damage your hearing before you need more power. With Klipsch it really is all about the first watt. I had a decent Fluke meter wired in that EICO/Corns deal. most of the time it was running a fraction of a watt. Pretty freaking loud at 1 Watt. I still can't find my Klipsch BullSchirt. one of the first posts in this thread had a pic of the BullSchitt button, it works too.
  8. Dan from Pasadena, you know anything about old Chevy pickups?
  9. Wow WOW > > Nitrogen gas-injected PSI™ filter for maximum signal transfer Been awhile since I've seen my old Bullschirt. Wonder what happened to it?
  10. I have serial #'s in the 1500 range. They were were dated as early 1960 by Klipsch. My K-5 horns are dated in late 1959. So your 17xx numbers sound good for your date of '62. Do your K-5 serial number stickers have dates? Mine have K-55 mid drivers which are later than the SA-HF pictured above. Are those yours? Maybe DJKs? [Later] my serial numbers are earlier then I thought. 1517 on one the other is a few numbers later. I don't have a decent pic of it.
  11. That drawer liner stuff is cheap and effective. Try it, but pop the metal feet off first. They were installed at the factory to make the speakers easy to slide across smooth concrete floors. The metal feet have a thing like a nail sticking out of the back. Any way you get a pry tool under them is OK. If you don't like what happens you can always tap them back in with a small hammer. No big deal.
  12. >>> "Is this a real sound difference between AL and AL-3 crossover ?" Yes and double Yes. Except the AL-3 would be very expensive to acquire in France and not necessarily a step in the right direction. Many, many parts involved with those things. You have the electronics and apparently the ears to appreciate the difference between the much-deprecated AL and a good set of A. Several members here (including myself) can build you a set of crossovers that will kill the ALs. They don't have to cost a fortune. Check out the parts count on the posted "A" schematic. More are not better. In the long run you'll be better off with tube pre and power amps. For a close up and personal setup like yours you might even check into a single ended triode deal. You don't need a lot of power there, especially with upgraded crossovers. As always, just my opinion. Others may differ and are welcome and even encouraged to. There's a lot of stuff out there. Some of it takes time to grow into or get used to.
  13. http://www.nytimes.com/2016/10/31/arts/music/london-listening-clubs-spiritland.html?rref=collection%2Fspotlightcollection%2FEditors’ Picks&action=click&contentCollection=Theater&module=Collection&region=Marginalia&src=me&version=spotlight&pgtype=article Hard to imagine anything much more favorable than this. Not a review at all, a detailed article about a trend towards audiophile listening cafes LS are repeatedly represented as the best of the best. Nice. Pic at the top of the article shows something that looks a lot like a set of DBB Corns. I wonder if these guys have ever heard a set of custom updated Klipschorns? So is the world finally catching up to the 2-Channel Forum?
  14. yes, that's the schematic for an HF-14. I have a power trans and 2 output trans for an HF-81 deal I was working on back around the turn of the century. I also have NOS EZ-81, a bunch of misc 12AX-7 and some Russian 7189 I got from Craig back then. I was thinking to finally find a use for these parts in a 12-14 or so watt amp driving a K-22 or K-24 or something smaller if I can find a good candidate. I guess those guys playing cigar box guitars and canjos use pretty small stuff. I'm used to KHorns so this stuff seems pretty small to me. This amp really looks pretty straightforward to me. I have a factory built HF-81 to look at if things get weird. They use "inexpensive" piezo pickups. $10 - 15 level stuff. I think most of them plug into a DI or direct box to get the level up some. anybody know if there's a 8" driver that's similar in quality to K-22 or 24? this is great, the cigar box guitar manifesto: http://www.cigarboxguitar.com/the-cigar-box-guitar-manifesto/ why not? I'm going to have to admit (Real Soon Now) that I'm thinking about doing this myself. There's not likely enough years left in me to be a classically trained bassist like my son, but maybe I could have some fun.
  15. I have Khorns and center Belle. I use a PWK mixer/splitter box and a digital TEAC AL-700P 3 channel stereo amp. The whole deal just plain kicks butt. I am using an old Dyna tube pre-amp.
  16. >>> It's shocking how strong the center sound is and the gigantic speakers in the corners completely disappear in terms of sound. It's only when you sit off-center can you finally hear sound coming directly from the speakers. Yeah, that's what I'm talkin' about. Speakers disappear, sound stage appears.
  17. dtel, thanks for being considerate. PLease go ahead and move it if that would be good. It's been so long since I've been regularly I didn't even realize there was a tube amp section.
  18. did you see my old Belle build thread? the forum software has been through iterations since then, my links are no good. I used the heat lock stuff on a bunch of veneer. worked out good mostly.
  19. So, out of the clear blue, it turns out a car buddy of mine I've known since 1969 has been sneaking out to Karaoke events and really enjoying himself. I had no idea. anyway, now I discover this guy, who is as talented a metalsmith as you'll ever see, is about half-done building himself a cigarbox guitar. (!) outtasite. anyway, he asked me if I know anything about low-power amps. (!!!!) Why yes, I do know a couple things about them. So now, I need to quickly build some kind of small tube amp. And I mean quickly. I have in hand some iron I bought from Heyboer back when I was into recreating an HF-81 type deal. There's a power transformer that Heyboer souped up a little for me and 2 replica output trannies. I have a couple NOS 6CA4 rectifier tubes for that deal and a handful of EL84 Russians I got from Craig many years ago. Plus a box of misc 12AX7. I'm thinking a circuit heavily modeled after/ripped off from the HF-81. I could use a Heresy woofer or the Industrial k24 version or some aftermarket equivilant. There was a thread recently about building a Super Heresy that mentioned several candidates. I'm having trouble getting enthused about cannibalizing my beloved '77 Heresys I bought new back in 78. I could do something temporary though. What saith the group? Am I barking at the wrong moon or within reasonable striking distance? I've got a detailed blueprint of the HF-81 around here somewhere.....
  20. haha, look at the serial number on yours and mine. probably built at Klipsch on the same day. What your Khorn serial numbers? Mine are 1511 and 1517. IIRC, I think Klipsch said they were sold new to a dealer in Michigan.
  21. put the Crites in, send both originals to Bob, re-cone them both. then they'll be the same and be right for K-horns or other Heritage. Or re-install them in your k-horns and sell the new Crites woofers. They're known good, you wouldn't have any trouble selling them. What year are your Khorns? those look like my woofers. Mine are 59 or 60s.
  22. Good to see you Dean. Dean was the main guy who made me feel welcome when I showed up here back in 2001 or whenever it was. Thanks, Dean. Lot of water under the bridge since then.
  23. My son plays doublebass and has even lately even branched out to playing a little electric bass guitar. I have my LS hooked up to an older Nakamichi 100W/channel amp in the family room. Nothing special about that amp. Of course the LS would drive you from the room and even the house if I ever turned up that amp into it's sweet spot range. But I will say this without reservation, my LS can reproduce faithfully anything my son can play on his bass. I completely fail to notice any lack of bass in the speaks. I think that deal is mostly pushed by people who play movies with sound effects. They don't go down there but that's not music any way. Dallas Wind Symphony? fine. San Diego Spreckles Organ in Balboa Park? Yes. Latest movie with Oscar-winning special effects? I can't even pretend to care. Plastic syntho-pop? I'd rather not. Alabama Shakes? Yes and double-yes. Just IMO, YMMV, all that.
