I saw them do their 25th anniversary tour in Philadelphia around '90 I guess. The volume was so low that I was straining to hear....along with the little speach about protecting the fans hearing, yadda yadda yadda. Probably I was spoiled by seeing them at Woodstock. Tommy was just released at that time or about to be... they did a lot of it...I remember wizard robes and hats. And the volume ?? adequate to say the least!!!!!!!!R.I.P. Keith and John.

Seller's feedback record isn't too good either. Buyer beware!

FWIW, the older K5's had three struts in the throat area of the horn, made of thin wood and glued to the fibreglass laminations. My '48 K5 has these, but by '54 they apparently were not used any longer. I can't really hear a difference between them. khorn58 had some good pictures posted about April and May '02 but I haven't seen anything from him recently. I found the pics in the archives and saved them. When the forum is back up I will post a good pic of the '51 K5 throat with struts. A search of posts by khorn58 will lead to several threads discussing the differences between the K5 and K400. I agree the K5 sounds better to me. (both with and without the struts in the throat). The early khorns were crossed over at 500 cycles with the 500/5000 network. Not sure of the date but until about 1960 I think. While you may hear response higher, it's not going to be usable.

IMHO, the media are sensationalizing what should be a quiet day of rememberance and resolve. Repeating the endless coverage and clips.....giving the camel jockeys exactly what they want (publicity) and the incentive to top it....sick and tired of hearing the I knew someone who knew someone stories... Make it a holiday???? For cryin out loud, do you even know what Memorial Day is? Here's a clue- it's not about barbequeing and a day off from work. I for one am fed up with this crap. FWIW, I was there doing my small part. This message has been edited by k2dx on 09-11-2002 at 10:07 PM

Measurements of K5 are approximately: 9 1/4" h 24 1/4" w 25 1/4" d (front of radius to rear of University SA midrange driver)

Here's a '54 utility version khorn....

http://greatplainsaudio.50megs.com/ This place can repair EV T35 (K77) tweeters, or supply diaphgrams to do it yourself. This is the only place you can get a 16 ohm replacement. There are other places that have 8 ohm replacements....

Amazing.

Here's a good place to find information and opinions on vintage gear and tubes (as well as high efficiency speakers): http://www.audioasylum.com/audio/tubes/bbs.html There is a SET forum as well.......

The 1RB appears to probably be a 6db/octave crossover, the difference being the 500/5000 having a steeper crossover for the tweeter (better lower frequency attenuation). Call Klipsch Monday... maybe they can tell you more.
-
I haven't seen that 1RB before, but I don't have that much experience. I can see it has two inductors, one iron core and one air core. Can you trace out the circuit and scan it? The metal 'cans' are caps, there should be values marked on the sides, the voltage rating is unimportant in this application, but the capacitance is. It will be in units called 'microfarads' abbreviated 'uFd' or 'mfd'. The second one, the 500/5000 is the same as one I'm trying to identify as to vintage. This one I have was installed in a Brociner/Klipschorn, vintage probably early to mid 50's. It may have been an update and has w6 stamped on the nameplate. My other 500/5000 crossovers are different, having three air core inductors. They are definately '54s. I had posted an inquiry about the one with the two air core inductors and one iron core. There were no replys. You will find variations in both the physical layout of these networks, having been assembled by different workersand subcontractors. There are also variations in the capacitors, different values being connected in parallel to make up the same total capacitance. Nice pair of khorns, were they the ones in suburban Phila area on ePay? Good luck with them! Fred

forgot to comment on impedances.... Use drivers that are the same impedance your crossover was designed for. eg 8 or 16 ohms (not the DC resistance of the driver!). The cross over point will be very different than the design frequency with a different impedance driver! University and Atlas both had 8 and 16 ohm impedance drivers......

It sounds like you got the SAHF drivers off? FWIW: Those TV type grip wrenches are available at Sears Hardware stores, in a set of two. They have rubber straps and work ok. I also have been using a similar type strap wrench from Pep Boys (Auto Parts store). It has a nylon fabric strap that you wind onto a 3/4 inch square handle that in turn gets tightened with a wrench. I got this for the chrome oil filter on my Harley. It can exert serious torque to a round object with no damage. This message has been edited by k2dx on 07-13-2002 at 07:55 AM

anyone heard martin logan electrostatic speakers ?
k2dx replied to arena's topic in Technical/Restorations
I use a pair of Carver Platinums in the living room. I've owned them since '90, and had the smaller Silvers before that. The Platinums are tall and imposing, but not deep. Each has a 60 inch ribbon and four 12" free air woofers. Crossed over at 125 cycles. They have superb imaging, almost eery. And real bass slam. The downside is that without serious power the dynamics aren't there. You really need the horsepower. I use a pair of bridged Carver M 4.0t amps @ a kw each. Quite a difference from my '54 khorn that is VERY content with a 25 watt Williamson tube amp (Heath W5M). I like them both. -
New Klipschorn Owner -Need Help
k2dx replied to InventiveAudio.com's topic in Technical/Restorations
Hi Trader, Didn't mean to repeat Edster, I must have been typing at the same time!! Spoke to Trey Cannon today @Klipsch. He's the one you need to speak to about older Klipsch. He feels my crossover in question may have been replaced as the K33P woofer was, maybe around'70 or so. The component(s) marked Mallory are likely oil filled capacitors. Can you post pictures? I would guess your older khorn, with the K5 wooden/fibreglass squawker, sounds like it's maybe 55-57?? Trey should be able to check the serial # for you. The other people in tech support aren't as familiar with older speakers as Trey is. -

Very nice score ! I'm not sure about the dates, recall seeing a list on one of the threads about the letter codes in the serial #'s. I think it applied to all models, and began around '61. If that's correct your #2D190 would be around '64? The other one sounds like a later '50s model, but call Klipsch and ask for Trey Cannon. He should be back from vacation today....he can check the dates. Is there an iron core inductor in the crossover of 1704? I'm trying to date one stamped W6 as well. It has two air core inductors and one iron. Good luck with them. -
Can anyone help with a 500/5000 crossover? This one is different than my other '54. This one appears 'newer'. There is a metal plate with the connections indicated and to the left is the "K-500-5000 Klipschorn Crossover Network" and a stamped "W6". The base and two inductors are painted flat black, from the factory. The center inductor is an iron core, marked 'T2' and '3110'. It has 5 terminals, numbered 0-4. Terminals 4,0,and 3 are used. The oil caps are two 5 uFd and a 2 uFd. The paper label on top states "inspected and tested by J. R. Jxxxxxx". I would like to find out the approximate date of this network and what the different terminals on the iron core inductor are. A diagram would be appreciated if anyone has one. This crossover is in a Brociner/Klipschorn, #145, no date given. Bass bin made by Brociner under Klipsch license, in NYC. Squawker is Klipsch #103, made in '48. Midrange driver is University SAHF. Tweeter is University mid t/4401. Thanks! (I am unable to read forum private messages.)

Sounds like a question for HDBRbuilder !!

Just aquired another old khorn, and am trying to date the crossover and speaker. The older gentleman, its second owner, believed it to be around '55. Bass bin made by Brociner laboratories in NYC under license from Klipsch, #145(?). Model Klipsch K-3-B. Woofer is Klipsch K 33 P, #3020. Squawker is Klipsch K5, #103, dated '48, with the ribs in the throat. Driver University SAHF. Tweeter is University mid t/4401. Crossover is Klipsch 500/5000 with long metal tag for the terminals and nameplate. Stamped "W6". Paper tag on top says "inspected by J.R.Jxxxxxx". two air core inductors and an iron core (in the center) labeled T2, 3110. It has five terminals, 0-4, with three connections. Three caps, two 5uFd and a 2uFd. Looks "newer" than my other 500/5000 crossovers, which have three air core inductors and four caps. Base is painted flat black. Any one see this crossover before? Grrrr, the f---s in CA have made it illegal for me to...
k2dx replied to kenratboy's topic in General Klipsch Info
What does any of this have to do with Klipsch??????? -
IMHO, it may be a good thing to try. In my '54 khorn, the k77 had been installed. I found the 4401 (which was what was originally installed) to sound 'smoother'. I had found the sound to be as you described. Your crossover should be fine. In my '54 it's a 500/5000.

Trader, You may consider a small ENCLOSED trailer. Uhaul has them reasonably priced. A tarp over the speakers will possibly be a problem at highway speeds. They have small trailers, maybe 8 or 10 ft. Lay the speakers on blankets, face down. Or stand upright, secured tightly to the tiedown points of the trailer. Secure against shifting. Pads or moving blankets to protect from rubbing. Several tiedown straps would be a good thing to bring (or rent). Balance the weight in the trailer. Good luck! Fred This message has been edited by k2dx on 06-25-2002 at 12:15 AM
