The mistake you’ll make isn’t having enough power, but of sound quality.

I had a Parasound HCA 2200 II back in the mid 90s. It was an ok amp, plenty powerful enough for sure. But when I bought a McCormack DNA 1 to replace it,  the improvement was astounding. So much so that when the potential buyer for the parasound came to pick it up, I almost lost the sale when he asked to hear the dna. All he could do was shake his head.

As a side bar, I know a lot of people use SS amps with cornwalls. But it’s with tubes that they really shine. That would be my advice.

+1 on tubes and Heritage speakers.

Not sure what streamed audio you are talking about. But Tidal and Quobuz offer lossless and hi rez streaming that is pretty much indistinguishable from the CD variant or original files.

I am at about 50/50 my music/Tidal for al of my digital listening. Both offer exceptional SQ.

Absolutely. I moved to Quobuz and it sounds better than Tidal and is less expensive. I'm using this as a streamer. https://www.allo.com/sparky/digione-signature-player.html

You have several different choices of spftware and they can be easily changed. The unit is future proofed.

My room is about 13’ by 15’ with an 8’ hallway that extends to the bathroom and a weird open closet makes it a little wider on the right side of the room by about 2.5’ with 8 foot ceilings. My current setup in here is a pair of rf7iii rc64iii pair of rf52ii and a pair of rb51ii. Love my current system and the rf7iii and rc64iii but wanted to try something maybe a little bit more musically and let me current setup cover movies and have the cornwalls for music. Also using a parasound a31 to power the front sound stage.

IMHO, H4's would be perfect in your room. I recently upgraded from H3's and bought B stock H4's for $2200 shipped. I use a subwoofer due to the size of my room. The H4's have the same tweeter and midrange horn as the CW4's. You really should listen to both and trust your ears.

Thanks Les, can you give some suggestions of any of these that don’t require diy and do these have a stepped attenuator?

I re-read your original post. *I* would get an active preamp with a phono stage.

I need to clean the contact on my 2a3 sockets... they seem really loose as well, but I hate pulling them out to work on them.  They can be 'tightened' with a small screwdriver.  You don't have to remove them to do this.

I also have an old knight integrated, never been able to find a schematic, but I can't do anything with the sockets (retension) and the pins on the newer el84 tubes seem smaller than the original tubes.

I guess I could replace the sockets, but that would be a pain to do. Take it to a good tech.

Have you had a similar issue to mine, where you actually started getting contact failure? So far I think that's what happened, the amp has been running smooth since cleaning.

Contact failiure could also be due to 'dirty' tube pins, especially on old production tubes. I clean the pins with Scotchbrite pads.

I have some RCA broadcast push-pull-parallel 45 amps I hope to get across the restoration finish line before much longer.  They claimed "25W peak without objectionable distortion", seems wishful thinking!   Particularly with modern full range speakers.  At least the La Scala will barely need a thing from them.

Those RCA amps are rare birds. Below is a parallel singled ended 45 amp with gas regulators. No, it's not mine.

So I recently had 2 pairs of mono blocks fall in my lap and coincidentally a lot of money fall out of my pocket at the same time...🙄. I have a restored pair of MC30 and my tech is finishing a pair of Eico Hf-60. I’m attempting to understand where a preamp fits in. All the amps make full power at .5 volts so tech says preamp selection doesn’t even matter and I know some people just feed a volume controlled dac or streamer into the amps directly. 90% of my listening is vinyl and I may eventually have one setup for vinyl and one for digital but for now that’s not gonna happen. So my question is why would I spend 2k on a mx100z or even more for an ARSp3 or even 5-600 on a new/restored pas if the gain is wasted? I have played with a Schiit saga but feel as though it’s a bit sterile. I do prefer tube sound and “coloring” without being veiled or dark. Then some people say use a ss preamp. I will obviously need some preamp to use my turntable. I know there are so many choices and opinions but that is what I’m looking for from people who own MC30s or Hf-60s. Also at different times these will power Chorus,Chorus2,Forte2, and someday a modded pair of Cornwall.

    Thanks,

    Mark

Look into a TVC, transformer volume control. Google is your friend.

I have had a 300B amp and a 2A3 amp and both were really nice sounding amps, when I got my 45 amp everything changed the amp journey was over and still is. My Korneff 45 amp sounds better than any other amp I have ever heard in my system and that's why it stays!!!

    Yes, the 45 will ruin you.  🙂 🙃 😎

As some background, I've been a fan of Klipsch speakers for many years (or at least their siblings). The 1st pair of speakers that I loved were a pair of Sound Dynamics 6S (made by API in Canada who also made Mirage and Athena). API was acquired up by Klipsch around 2005 or so). I've have Energy C-7 and C-5 speakers also (I believe part of the Klipsch family). The exception is a pair of Paradigm Legend V3.

My mid-life crisis is calling for an audio upgrade. The Covid-19 thing has prevented me from auditioning anything, so I've done a lot of reading in the internet (perhaps a dangerous thing).

Circumstances are that I'm in a townhouse, so volume will always be low to moderate. My original search was for a pair of speakers to be run in a stereo setup to fill an open concept townhouse main floor (family room, dining room, kitchen).  I rarely sit front and center for a pure listening session, but music is always on in my home. So, wide dispersion and a forgiving placement and listening location are important. My musical taste ranges from classic rock, especially from '70's, some new alternative (Alt-J comes to mind immediately), smooth/funk jazz (so plenty of sax and some vocals), and chill (lots of base beats).

On paper the new Cornwall IV seems to be a good fit. But some people out the on the internet call them an antiquated design that's harsh and with poor sound stage. Apparently they're better when played at concert level volumes. I would imagine this audience will be somewhat defensive to these accusations, but I'd like to hear what you have to say.

Others say that with an adequate tube amp setup, they can be quite spectacular. Again, your input would be appreciated.

When things open up (I'm in Toronto, Canada area) I plan on trying to find an audio store with them for audition.

Another interesting speaker that I'm considering is the Focal Aria 948. You're welcome to make comments or suggest other speakers that might suit my situation well (in the same price range).

    Thank you!!

My listening habits are similar. I had H3's for years and just got B stock H4's for $2200. Listen to them also. They may tick all the boxes for you too. I'm driving them with an Inspire 45/2A3 amp from Dennis Had, the retired founder of Cary Audio. His amps and preamps are excellent and affordable.

I’m confused. When I listen to say Sarah McLachlan angel on my rf-7III the sound is impeccable and so beautiful it could bring me to tears. But then I go to David grey sail away on tidal and it just seems to all fall apart, I mean it’s not horrible but from angel to sail away I just don’t know how there’s such a drastic change in overall quality and depth and Fidelity and clarity And both are so called hifi quality. I don’t understand how it can be both “hifi”  music and I’m sure both well recorded but yet the sound quality on my end is so different. And this happens with many songs sometimes. Why does this happen? And like it’s kinda loud but Not too loud only at around -33 and it seems about 2 times close to when the songs almost over when Sara is singing the tweeter starts ringing or distorting for just a split second or so and it seems like its only coming from my right rf7iii. Probably has to do with the crossover or the horn? I’ve noticed klipsch speakers don’t like certain tones. Does anyone else get or notice things like this from Angel or any other songs?

It's the software not the speakers. I'm driving Heresy 4's with a 2 watt 45 amp. I use Tidal, wifi connected, with a discontinued Arcam rPlay and a MHDT Labs Orchid DAC. Sounds great.

Do you use the Anthem for movies or only music? Are you streaming Tidal throught the DAC in your amp? Wifi or Bluetooth?

I would go with the deeper bass extension and height of the Fotre' III's personally as you have a large room to fill.  You may have to jump up to Cornwall IV's for a room that size.

+1 with a room as large as your Forte's or Corny's would be the ticket.

Higher Power on Effecient Speakers ?

IMHO I have liked SET amplification for its clarity and sweet mids. As long as the amp could produce enough power to render a decent overall Sound Quality I never gave it much thought. I moved to Bi-amping for a LONG time so Lower power was even less of a concern.

Recently I have been exploring Open Baffles and even more recently Open Baffles using a solo 15 inch full range driver alone on a larger baffle. Initially I stayed with my previous thinking that SET was enough. It did produce a nice sound overall.

Pondering thoughts about the Bass I decided it was time to try higher power. I popped in my Vincent ST70.  I was a bit shocked. I noticed something that had escaped me before, Vocals seem more fleshed out, Fuller. Bass was of course improved with better impact. I dont perceive a loss of fidelity, in fact just the opposite.

This brings 1 question to mind for me. Is it the single drivers coherence that is highlighting the higher power amps abilities, could that be why I never really heard it before ?

What ever the reason I am certainly happy to hear it.  My Higher eff. single driver speaker is a DIY build Lii Audio F-15 on a barrel style baffel that measures 36 tall by 29 wide and is approx 100 Db

It's a efficient 15 inch full range driver that needs more than fleawatts to get a grip on the bass. What is the size of your room?

CD, Streaming as of now. Want to add vinyl soon. I also miss having a equalizer to play with. I like a wide variety of music. Classic rock, Progressive rock, jazz, big band,

I have a Reisong Boyuu A50 MKIi 300B ordered from China hifi audio but I may never see it.
I can’t figure out how to get my pictures headed in the right do! 🤔🤪

Just curious, why do you think you will never see it?

Klipsch Heritage speakers and tubes are 👍 Here is an interesting integrated amp with tone controls and a phono preamp. http://www.erhard-audio.com/Basie.html  It's more than you want to spend at the moment but may be a much better option in the long run and has enough power to make your Cornwalls get up and dance.

I have been using his Aretha preamp for a year and it's quite good. I stream Tidal and the treble control really tames poorly recorded CD's.

I have one amp which came with (and is specified to use)  a CV378 rectifier. I have another amp which came with (and is specified to use)  a 5UG4 rectifier. Neither instruction manual discusses or says not to use a different rectifier, but as noted, specifies the respective tube. It’s time to retube.

Depending upon what you read (God bless the internet), these tubes are interchangeable or cannot interchange or are bested by a 5R4GYS.

It’s time to retube. May I please have some advice and thoughts from our tube experts ?

    Thanks in advance.

Here is a link to the Tube Substitution Handbook  http://www.smcelectronics.com/DOWNLOADS/TUBE SUB 1980.PDF

You could use a 5R4GYS instead of a 5U4G. The CV378 in an indirectly heated tube. You should check with the manufacturer before using something else. It's a very long life tube and if you could have it tested it may be fine. If you have to buy one Upscale is a trusted seller. https://upscaleaudio.com/products/mullard-gz37-cv378
