It is just flat ridiculous when you thing about it. And a few would argue they made a legendary speaker (Heresy III) worse. Bass reflex versus the former sealed cab design. Sealed cab loudspeaker designs are going the same way as the dodo bird.

I believe it's a sales technique primarily. Sell the latest design improvement @ considerable markup. The latest and greatest. They know someone purchasing the new cornwall or heresy IV models have considerable resources, or deep pockets. Some peeps don't bat an eye to buy the latest.

We have yet to see anyone post here boasting of their new CW4 acquisition/performance. Least I have yet to read such here. A few reviews on line yes.

I have a pair of B stock H3's in Lacewood veneer that I bought in 2012 for $1299. The H4's have a tractix midrange and the crossover appears to be different. I drive them with tubes. I'm not sure *I* could tolerate them driven by solid state. I wonder if the new designs were voiced to accomdate solid state amps? I'd like to hear the 4's but don't think I'll part with my 3's.

I have been rotating Quicksilver Audio Horn Monos in and out of my system for years.  The other amp is an ATI 1502.  The QS are very quiet and built to last.  Recommend them without hesitation.  Plus the owner of QS will talk with you on the phone if you need him.

An audio buddy in California has the QS mono 120's and loves them. QS products are excellent.

    PS

Tarheel, he's the one that got me going with the rPlay. :)

The power supply on my Channel Islands seems to have died. It was about 11 years old. Using my old MSB Link III with Monlithic power supply with non functioning sampling board. It is 16 years old. Both have Burr Brown chips.

For a job interview I studied AKM DAC chips. Certainly a Mytek or Benchmark would be great but pricey due to my forced early retirement after 25 years. Still looking for a job at 59.

My wonderful bride of 37 years said I can spend 500 USD or so on  new DAC. The Chi Fi phenomena has passionate folks on both sides pro and con. The Topping D70 seems to have good AKM components.

    What others should I consider?

I'm old and semi retired, I think you should look int a MHDT Labs Orchid DAC. Me thinks it would make you smile.

Spotify Premium was easy to work with and to borrow play list from others but when I compared it with CDs the quality was lacking.  I really don't want to contribute to Jay-Z so I'm considering Amazon UHD streaming.

When I was using Spotify I went from my lap top to a dac and that was it.  Is there a better way to go for sound quality?  I really am a beginner here.

What is the rest of your system and will streaming be your only source?

I like some of Cary Audio's stuff, mainly their preamplifiers. The founder of Cary Audio, Dennis Had, sold the company and makes amps on his own now under the Inspire name. Might be something you would be interested in.

Below is an Inspire parallel single ended pentode amp built by Dennis Had retired founder of Cary Audio. I'm running Pope 6V6GT's with a Sophia Blue 6SL7 and a 5Y3 rectifier driving Heresy III's with a HSU subwoofer. It can run many different tubes by changing the rectifier. I attached a sheet of combinations provided by Dennis. With 6V6's , 6L6GA's etc. and a 5Y3 rectifier it runs very cool and sounds excellent. I bought this one second hand. The seller had Dennis build a parallel single ended 45 amplifier, 5 watts, for him. He will be driving Forte III's with it. Pic attached.

These are fine amps and incorporate 60 years of audio design experience. They play well with Klipsch.  There is a 5,000 post thread on https://www.audioaficionado.org/showthread.php?t=24170&highlight=PSE+amplifier Enjoy. :)

So my wife, the electronic technician, recently diagnosed and repaired an issue with one of my Quicksilver Silver Mono Blocks. God bless her! So now she wants to build an amp or a pair of mono blocks. I have started researching kits but thought I would ask you all for any recommendations. Want something that looks as nice as it sounds.

I don't have a dog in the NOS vs new fight.

As I write this I'm listening to an amp with NOS Telefunken ECC83 & GE 5814 driver tubes, and new Elrog 300B power tubes, and it sounds great!

My question is this -- is anyone making great new 12AU7/ECC82/5814 or 12AX7/ECC83 tubes?  I love my Elrog 300B's, but don't know of anyone making similar quality available in new driver tubes.

    Thanks!

The Psvane small signal tubes are excellent in the right circuit.

    What amp?

I have both the EML 45 Meshplate Balloon tube version and their Solid Plate 45's. Both sound better in my amp than a variety of NOS 45's I've tried. I don't think you'll have trouble hearing the difference between the EML and NOS 45's.

    Wb

I used EML solid plate 45's in a Jeff Korneff amp and could not go back to NOS 45's.

I have not tried Tidal. Can you hear an audible difference between Tidal and Spotify premium? I mainly use Spotify @ my desktop pc, listen to music while browsing the net or playing cards. And my desktop sounds pretty good, Elac 6.2 bookshelf speakers and a small chinese (Fosi with tone controls) chip amp pushing 30-40 wpc. The speakers are 2-3 feet from my head. Occasionally I do Spotify to my LR AVR/corns. My hearing is damaged above 5khz so that is a factor for sure.

If you have hearing issues stay with Spotify. I'm 67 and don't ....yet and but you can't predict the future.

Streaming can be quite confusing, yet can be done quite simply. I use an Arcam rPlay with the PlayFi app. The app allows access to all of the streaming services and internet radio. I control it from my iPad. I'm using Tidal. I have a MHDT Labs Orchid DAC , a tube amp and preamp driving Heresy III's.

Tidal sounds excellent if the recording is good. Not all analog to digital transfers were remastered so some albums are so so. I have not had any significant issues with this set up.

My KEF LS50 Wireless are so much better once you use the KEF App to choose wether they are wall mounted, desk mounted or stand mounted and the differences between a life room and  a fairly dead room and setting up crossover frequencies. Without those setting being right I think they sound mediocre. Setup correctly the music they reproduce is stunning. They punch well above their wight.

If YOU can't hear a difference and the music sounds good to YOU just enjoy.

I have a pair of Forte II paired with a Marantz 2325 and absolutely love the sound! I have been thinking about diving into the world of tube amps for a while now and finally bit the bullet and picked up a Marantz 8 from 1959 and it seems to be in great condition (I will know for certain next week when it is in my hands). My question to the group is whether or not my Forte II would be a good speaker match to stand up to the Marantz 8 and fully obtain that warm amazing tube sound that all of you talk about so much? I plan to use my 2325 as a pre-amp until I can afford a tube pre-amp. Look forward to hearing from the group. I will post some photos later tonight.

It should be quite good sounding. If it has not been checked out by a competent tech I'd do that before you power it up.

Looking to take plunge into a tube amp

what are the best output tubes for Heritage speakers.?Mine are LaScala

Do some due diligence and check out Dennis Had's Inspire amplifiers. They can use many different out put tubes so you can decide for yourself which tube your ears prefer.

I disagree with most of the above (except the doing your homework part)  Vintage or used tube amps are, for lack of a better term.....a crap shoot. (UNLESS THEY HAVE BEEN RESTORED BY A WELL KNOWN COMPETENT SHOP).  Tubes are a commitment, where you will likely need spares, you will need to learn the multitude of types, manufacturers and the intricacies of each.  All of that is of course fun, but can also be very frustrating and time consuming..  The other question would be as to whether you are looking for tube separates or a tube integrated.  So, having said all of that, I would recommend looking at FULLY RESTORED vintage Mcintosh MC30 monoblocks, Mcintosh MC240, or new Justin Webers products (ampsandsound.com), or new products from Dennis Had, which you can find on ebay.

I have/had experience with all of the above, so please feel free to PM me with questions.

I agree on Dennis' Inspire line.

Yes I did. Long story short right after I got the QS the guy I sold my Primaluna Integrated HP to 4 months ago when I needed money for an emergency asked me if I wanted it back as he has developed a serious hearing issue with one of his ears and his audiophile days are over according to him..Being I almost gave that amp away when I sold it to him I'd be a fool not to ****** it back.>SO the QS is going up for sale.

The QS sounds great, no issues at all. Well balanced all around...the midrange is SWEET!!!

    Cheers

    Don

Will you be able to compare the amps before selling the QS?

Well, I have had these pair of Moondogs for 18 years.  This is the first time I am having problem with them about two weeks ago.  Tonight was the first time I opened them in so long I don’t even remember.  I played music on these pair almost every day with my Klipschorns.

I'd talk to the tech about replacing all the film capacitors, including the Jensens.

Luxman is highly regarded. I owned a top of the line Luxman receiver  (R1120) and it was very, very nice. That being said if you are looking for a another choice in an integrated amplifier using EL84 tubes, I  recommend the Quicksilver Integrated. 20wpc into 2, 4 or 8 ohms using four EL84's per channel, it does a great job throughout the frequency range and I've listened to it with many speakers and have liked it with them all within the amp's power rating. It should have no problem driving your speakers.

+1 QS is a sleeper company that makes excellent gear. 20 watts will be plenty with K-Horns.

It might've been the caps just went bad, but just as likely, or more, something else made them die.  A more thorough checkout should be in order.

Find a reputable repair shop. Now is not the time to DIY.

I been using a Korneff 45 amp for years with my Khorns and nothing has ever sounded better to me. I had a 300B for years in the same set up then tried the 2A3, they did not compare to the 45 amp not even close...

I agree and I regret selling my Korneff 45. I ran it with EML solid plate 45's. NOS 45's paled in comparison. If you try them you will be AMAZED. FWIW, I preferred the solid plate over the mesh plate.
