  1. Is 10' x 10' square listening room going to work for Forte IV? I'm currently using alnico Heresy I driven by SET tubes with good results but want full range performance without the hassle of adding a sub. Will the passive radiators at the back be an issue? FYI, my H1's are placed around 10" from the back wall and 6" from the side walls at the moment. Any thoughts? Thanks.
  2. How good are IV's in reproducing the double bass? I don't use sub and find H1's double bass reproduction on the weak side (one note) and lacking extension. Here are some pics of my cabinets. Looks like the previous owner used paint stripper on one of them and abandoned the project. Also some corners are not sharp or dented.
  3. Has anyone compared Heresy I (especially with alnico drivers) to IV? Does the latest IV run circles around the I? I'm asking because I have a pair of H1 with alnicos. They sound fabulous with tubes (lifelike jazz vocal) but the cabinets look beat up. A very clean pair of H1s as cabinet donors are getting expensive these days. I'm debating if it's really worth the trouble chasing clean H1s for restoration as brand new B-stock IVs can be had for ~$2400. Any thoughts? Thanks.
  4. I got a lead on a pair of very nice condition unfinished HBRs with close serials 152Y2** that can be used as donor units. Are the cabinets going to be direct fit for my 1976 alnico drivers? Thanks.
  5. I have a pair of 1976 with alnico drivers. My listening room size is 10 ft x 10 ft. Here are the approximate placement measurements: From side wall: 6" From back wall: 1" Between speakers: 96" (equipment rack in middle) Stand height: 17" Mild toe-in I'm getting a "triangular" shaped soundstage, i.e. good center depth and layering but the image gets noticeably shallower behind the speakers on both sides. Also, I'm not getting much width beyond the sidewalls. So overall the presentation is cramped, e.g. drum set sits right next to the piano in a small jazz ensemble. How can I get more width out of my setup or is it a matter of listening room real estate? Thanks.
  6. I have a pair of 1976 Heresy I with alnico drivers. The cabinets have seen better days but the sound is fabulous otherwise. I'm looking to move the drivers to new cabinets so they'll look as good as they sound. Does anyone know anyone who makes custom new H1 cabinets? Thanks.
  7. I'm now using Wharfdale Linton stands. The soundstage really opens up and comes into focus. Question: should I couple or decouple the speaker to the stand? Right now I'm not using anything in between. Thanks.
  8. I prefer not to drill holes to my Heresy's as they never came with risers.
  9. I'm currently auditioning 2 stands for my Heresy I alnico: JBL JS120 and Wharfdale Linton. My room size is 10' x 10' square room. My Heresy's are placed very close to the corners at 7" from back wall and 4" from side wall. It seems like they sound best sitting on the floor firing straight with no toe-in and level (flat bottom, no slant riser). The stands make them image slightly better but the overall presentation sounds thin due to the lack of bass reinforcement. The bass has more weight sitting on the floor but muddy most likely due to my fully carpeted floor. What's a good inexpensive platform material to use under the speakers if I want a more solid foundation than the carpet? How about concrete slab paverstone square? Thanks.
  10. Has anyone compared the Deer Creek stand to the JBL JS120 stand made for the L100 that also fits the Heresy or even the taller (and cheaper) JS80? I wonder which listening height works better for my 10' x 10' squarish listening room. Thanks.
  11. How do I find them on Amazon? Thanks.
  12. Where can I buy this stand? Thanks.
  13. Those woofers are not mine. I'm just curious what those alnico manget caps are for as they are not on mine.
  14. Do I need longer wood screws with this tape or the stock screws are OK? Should I add some of this tape to the seal the driver surrounds on the inside?
  15. I have problem finding window seal thin enough to seal the gap between the main cabinet and the cabinet back. Does anyone know a good source for this type of paper thin window seal? Thanks.
  16. Is the cabinet back meant to be air tight? If so, is there any gasketing tape you would recommend that goes between the cabinet and the cabinet back? Thanks.
  17. I have no clue how the previous owner used them but I would assume yes otherwise they can't oxidize.
  18. Is this oxidation on the K77 tweeter housing normal and doesn't affect performance? Is it necessary to clean it up? I see it all the time on other Heresy I's online as well. Looks like this is a common issue. Thanks.
  19. How can I tell if the alnico drivers are out of spec? The speakers sound great to my ears.
  20. My pair of Heresy I comes with K22-E alnico woofers. They are 40+ years old. I'm wondering if the accordion woofer surrounds will dry rot like other vintage woofers with rubber surrounds. If something breaks down in these vintage woofers due to aging, what usually goes first? These speakers like to be played loud. Is it possible to have too much woofer excursion resulting in damage? I'm driving them with 11W SET tube amp. Is it too little power to worry about damaging the drivers? Thanks.
  21. Looks like you are right on the chemical removal agent because the transition is smooth. What grade sandpaper would you recommend to smooth out the grain to match everywhere else? Thanks.
  22. Yes, just one (vertical) side got sanded. The third picture is actually showing the bottom. It gives you an idea of the original finish vs the sanding. Thanks.
  23. That's what I think too because they don't look like mud magnet to me. Thanks.
